The future for Carney
While Theresa May’s jibe over international citizenship was not explicitly directed at Carney, the Canadian governor must have felt its impact – and adding insult to injury was the fact his very policy was also attacked in the same speech. In what must have felt like a general loss of confidence in his ability to function in a post-Brexit world, it was rumoured Carney had seriously toyed with the decision to step down. Indeed, many media outlets urged him to do just that.

Canadians should keep Lynn’s analysis in mind when they eventually head to the polls. Indeed, the British media warned about Carney for years. Many on the left and right didn’t particularly like him, and often spoke out strongly against him. Canada’s Liberals either weren’t aware of what was being said, didn’t heed the warnings or ignored them entirely. If the Carney experiment fails, we’ll know exactly who to praise — and who to blame.

I recall reading somewhere that says Carney didn't get any joint press conference with leaders after their talks!

 

Macron and Carney appeared in front of reporters before the talks but did not take questions, a sign the French president might not want to upset Trump by siding with Canada.

 

Macron said tariffs only bring inflation but did not address Trump’s attacks on Canada.

While governments come to power with big plans, they often end up lurching from crisis to crisis, most not of their own making. They need to be nimble, they need to be able to respond to changing circumstances quickly and Carney doesn’t appear to be able to do that.

Carney wants to talk about one thing and one thing only: Donald Trump. He sees Trump as his meal ticket to being elected as prime minister.
