If The Dems Manage to Kill Trump Before the Inauguration, Does Vance Still Become President?

Of course it makes perfect sense that Vance would become president, I'm sure that 99% of people would assume that to be the case, but I don't know if that's what it says in the constitution. Theoretically the exact line of succession to the WH is a bit of a secret after the VP and the speaker of the house or whatever.

Is there a surprising, nonsensical protocol for "assassinated/died before inauguration"? 

For the good of the country & the world, I hope he steers well clear of low-slope roofs for the next 65 days. And thereafter.

the official handover is when the Electoral College votes in December

if the President Elect dies before that vote, the GOP could nominate a replacement over and above Vance

after the Electoral College votes, that seals the deal, if the President Elect dies after that the VP replaces him
