The Case for Joe Biden Staying in the Race

Quote

At this moment, Biden’s odds of winning the upcoming election don’t seem great, but I also think that Trump comes with his own chaos and that it might just be better to present the most stable and well-known option, which, unfortunately enough, is still Biden. Democratic voters should be furious about what certainly seems like a manipulation of the public’s trust and the arrogance of an Administration that tried to push a diminished Biden into a campaign season in the vain hope that maybe they would just get lucky and all the highest-profile moments would magically line up with his good days. And, if people want Biden to step down because he has betrayed the voters who put him in office, I think that’s a justifiable argument. But, if the point is for the Democrats to figure out their best shot at defeating Trump, we should realize that the duplicitousness, incompetence, and arrogance of the Biden Administration and Democratic Party leadership is actually a case against a seismic shift. These are still going to be the same people who decide on the process for a successor. Do we actually trust them to get it right? And are the chances they can field and support a new candidate higher than the chances that Biden has a series of better days and can regain some of the trust he has lost?

I don’t think it’s possible to clearly say one option is much better than the other, but I would argue, almost by default, that acting in a rash manner without a real contingency plan tends to lead to bad results, especially when you’re dealing with inept actors. I would feel differently if there were one obvious replacement for Biden or even two but the task of whittling down a field of contenders in four months feels like a principled protest rather than a measured and pragmatic strategy. By the slimmest of margins, I find myself opting for the known bad candidate over the chaos of the unknown. The Democrats have to hope that Biden can keep giving speeches like he did in North Carolina and that the debate will become an unpleasant but fading memory. They have to believe the polls are wrong. They need Trump to remind the country why they rejected him in 2020. The situation is certainly dire, but the irony here is that the Party’s foolishness and Biden’s arrogance, stubbornness, or blindness, means that we are stuck with him. There is no realistic Plan B.

So here's the problem with that.

As we saw in the debate trump has been exercising absolutely amazing restraint for him during this election cycle. He seems to have learned his lesson and is controlling himself nicely. He's actually coming across as the more lucid and staple of the two.

The suggestion would have worked against 2020 trump but 2024 trump seems very different. Even his insults are pretty tame."I don't know what he said there. I don't think he does either." Not exactly a curse-filled explicitive rant.

If trump carries on keeping the talking to a minimum and making this election about Joe then Joe is done. It won't even be close. As it is he's pulling away in the poles nicely especially in the swing states. And that's before we address voter turnout.

This about sums it up. Odd title for an article in which one point after another just ruthlessly bashes the Democrats. You're led to assume that eventually the author will spin it around to deliver some twist as to why Biden is still the guy, but no not really.

Pompous primaries don't work. Just a failure, right before our eyes. What was great for the 18th century is not guaranteed to pass in the 21st.

How about in the time that remains, the citizens will determine the best candidate for the sane America? I really don't care about what stripe he carries at this time, it's about way more than that. The party elites failed the citizens in a major, quite possibly irreparable way. Absolute absence of principle vs. accomplished failure of responsibility. Just not great.

Well, there is some truth to this thread.

Kamala Harris is not polling better... she is an absolute mess. If Biden drops out, it will be a blood bath in the party if she is not the nominee and even worse for them winning the Presidency.

LOL, oh how I hope things are just like this going into the election after the conventions.

Yeah, that didn't seem to be the turnaround they were hoping for. I think they were really hoping for a reset and it doesn't sound like that's what happened. And now I read that calls to get him to step down are increasing.

He is very lucky in a way that it's summer and that people aren't paying full attention to an election just yet. So I think the polls are slower to react. But this isn't getting better for him, and when people start really thinking about this come September I think the gap is just going to widen and at that point they're probably will be no option for a recovery.

Joe is not suffering greatly in the polls, and in a few weeks the debate failure will be forgotten.

He needs to make up for it with no further faux paus.

Here he is today on the campaign trail, promising to beat trump again in 2020.

Yeah.  So.... good luck with that whole 'no more faux paus' thing

LOL, the floodgates have been opened. Every day, every public appearance, the media now comments on his being too old.

This pressure is only going to increase up to the convention. Good luck!

A lot of dem insiders are stepping up their calls too.

Biden thinks if he just keeps saying no the party has to eventually realize that he's their only option and back him. The party thinks if they cut him off he'll realize stepping down gracefully is his only option. So it's a game of chicken.

Safe bet they're bribing him in the background -  they'll offer to make him or the kids board members in some charity or similar org for millions of dollars - the presidency is all about money to them.

We'll see how it lands but there's just no coming back from this and that's a fact.

How much do you get paid to make a fool of yourself defending Biden? 😆

Pay is secondary because it's a cultural match. roboshill is a pathological liar, so he finds crooked Joe and the rest of the democrat party very much to his liking.

Robosmith,

Explain your point of view. You know, cause and effect.

Just saw the polls yesterday and 6 major Democratic prospects polled LOWER against Trump than Joe.

Problem is that it is not going to get better for Biden those prospects have a legitimate shot at improving their position, Biden doesn't.

Everyone will be watching his speeches like a hawk and pointing out every fumble.

He would have to be perfect, not only with giving teleprompter speeches and go into hostile interviews, like Fox News (which he has not has not granted a single interview) and having actual press conferences.

He needs to have a cognitive test to allay any fears of cognitive decline.

Barring any of these things his poll numbers will only decline more and more and soon California would even be in play for Republicans.

Now it will be a difficult election for any Democrat to win at this point considering the perception of the country's situation even if Biden was in perfect working order.
