herbie
Maple Ridge, B.C., will be home to a new $1.05-billion lithium-ion battery plant and an anticipated 450 permanent jobs.https://globalnews.ca/news/10091780/billion-dollar-battery-plant-maple-ridge/ Might as well get in on it. BC used to be a major builder of heavy trucks good to see some secondary industry coming back.

ExFlyer
Is Canada trying to be the battery building country??? Why are we allowing this toxic and environmentally unfriendly industry take foothold in Canada?
herbie
And makes you think lithium is toxic and environmentally unfriendly? You forget to take yours today?
eyeball
It takes 500,000 lbs of ore, about two of these trucks full, to make one Tesla battery. Edited November 18 by eyeball
eyeball
Where they should really build a battery factory is in the middle of an ore field.
herbie
And shipping materials needed, people into and products out of remote ore fields even makes sense? Or even environmental sense? Know how many trucks like that of ore it takes to make a pair of gold earrings? Or how much fuel the semis and ore ships use to bring it to a smelter? For nipple rings, nose studs and other non vital shiny things?

Clearly battery tech is where the auto industry is moving. No one claims it doesn’t have its own issues and problems, but to suggest it is worse than oil for ICE is rather silly. Aristides
This plant is not making EV batteries.
herbie
Hmmm. So putting a battery plant in Maple Ridge, right there in the spot where EVs make more sense than any other method is a bad idea? Everywhere you want to go on a daily basis is within range of the lowest range EV currently on the market. Maybe they could drive their F350s down to park at another $20 billion in actual taxpayer cost SkyTrain extension instead. Create 20 news jobs and no new industry instead. herbie
Oh good those exploited child workers and huge diesels will be used for laptops so people can whine about how horrible lithium is for cars.... They could adapt them if demand happens... they're all just stacks of cells in different shapes.

TreeBeard
9 minutes ago, Army Guy said: I thought that those new jobs were for foreign workers only.... Wrong battery plant. But, while you’re on the topic, it’s the trade deal Harper created that opened the door to the foreign workers at the plant in Ontario. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/south-korea-battery-factory-trade-deal-1.7035141 Hundreds of South Koreans expected to work at the NextStar EV battery factory in Windsor, Ont., are legally eligible to work in Canada under a 2015 free trade agreement negotiated and implemented by Stephen Harper's former Conservative government. That’s Conservative policies for you…
