Why Canada Sucks Now

You’re factoring in the extremes.  Most of the population of Canada is within a three hour drive of the US border.

Which means what? That shipping costs don't exist? That they aren't a lot higher in Canada? That sit doesn't go to a distribution centre first, and then gets shipped somewhere else?

You mean they've been lying that a loaf of bread and jug of milk cost $1.00 more here because we're 150km from the city? That it really doesn't cost $2000 more to drive a truckload of gasoline that distance?

Do you think any of that JUST HAPPENED? do you think that until recently food magically appeared in the store?

Yet our food wasn't skyrocketing before.  Sooooo - what changed? because it isn't that food goes to distribution centers - it's been that way for about 100 years now

And what about locally grown food.  Why is milk going up, we don't import that it's all grown local. So it isn't transport

I"m pretty sure we have wheat in Canada too.  So what IS with that loaf of bread?

Think about what you're saying before saying it next time

You have anecdotes.  I prefer data.

Groceries Prices in United Kingdom are 24.7% lower than in Canada

I don't see a date in that unvetted article.

The links I gave make a more important point. There are ways to mitigate the current circumstances but this government is not interested in taking action, and is actually benefiting from it.

I spoke to a man who was just there a few days ago. Are you in the UK?

Otherwise your comments are not worth much.

The fact is that most countries are facing the same challenges as we, but some have taken steps to stop the steep rise in prices through certain economic controls. They may increase their national debt in doing so, but that is just a numbers game.

Canada's government does nothing. Mr. Trudeau likes this situation we're in, because for one he likes high gas prices. Also higher food costs and higher prices on all products means higher taxes. A windfall for the Trudeau government.

And I can show you links where they have been accused of this, but all we get from them is shrugs.

Yes what’s amazing to watch is the Canadian Liberal-NDP government’s clear contempt for Canadians, who are treated like children who can’t make decisions for themselves, yet almost half of Canadians seem to embrace this abdication of personal responsibility.  This isn’t the Canada of Mulroney, Chrétien, or Harper. Government programs and narratives now dominate our lives.  It’s basically the lie that Canada was bad until now (though in reality it was better here than in most countries for most people).  We’re told that the only way to redeem ourselves is to empower certain identity groups above others and to water down our rights because the state knows how we should live and what we deserve.  Tax our fuel and regulate our energy into submission.  Permit and encourage self-destruction.  The American way is better.

That way they don't need to think. Canadians are by and large too comfortable and complacent. I recall a quote by Trudeau senior in which he expressed his contempt for Canada's peasantry, something to the effect that all Canadians need to be satisfied is "a bottle of beer... a hockey game." And that's because we did so well in the years after the world wars, especially from about 1960 onward, the so-called golden age of socialism in Canada. This was among the best, if not the best country in the world. Canadians were right to love their country and trust their government. Over the years things got tougher, but nothing like we're seeing now. I blame Trudeau 100% for the current situation, because of his incompetence.

Interestingly our new British coworker also mentioned that there are massive protests every day in London and other large UK cities. They are protesting higher prices, frozen wages and loss of their rights. Sure wish Canadians would take a page from that. I'm ready to go to the hill and throw some rocks.

And if they handled their own money all they'd buy would be beer and popcorn.

yeah - the libs are not afraid of proclaiming their contempt for the average canadian.

Well we know from the Freedom Convoy that this government will toss out our rights and introduce martial law if the opposition gets too vocal.  Canada is riding on the coattails of the past generations who built this country and its democratic institutions, while also denigrating these ancestors and tearing down their statues. Even the greatest unifying achievements like Vimy are being erased by the cultural revolutionaries.  A weak-minded wannabe actor and supply teacher is dividing Canadians against each other and claiming to rescue Canada from a shameful past.  The truth is that Canada has gone downhill since the Trudeau Liberals came to power, really downhill.

The high cost of groceries has nothing to do regulations, carbon taxes, and inflationary over-spending by government, right?

You forgot to mention climate change.

It always comes down to what I said in my first post in this topic.

A lot of these opinions about how Canada sucks can be summed up as follows:  “the party I voted for didn’t get in power. Trudeau sucks.  I can’t call people insulting, racist, homophobic names anymore without consequences” ….

That is just the kind of unthinking reactionary crap that keeps the culture wars going. Completely dismiss everyone's concerns about the way society, its traditions, values and history are being torn away in place of nothing but a continual outrage cycle and sneer in a superior fashion at everyone who doesn't believe exactly as you do on every single issue. It's an almost religious zealotry that denigrates all who are unbelievers in whatever the latest progressive fad is and declares them unworthy of having opinions.

One of the leftists' favourite tricks for stirring up racial division is to engage in presentism, where you compare our past to the present, instead of comparing it to what the rest of the world was doing.

Mobile Alabama in 1800 was pretty chill compared to Riyadh back then, it's even comparable to Riyadh today, but leftists compare it to the nap room in a safe space on the Berkeley campus for effect.

They get this mindless crap from down south, where so many American liberals have been busy wringing their hands with guilt for years now. And have been driven out of their mind by the accidental death of a dumb black criminal junkie. We never had slavery and almost all the black people in Canada are immigrants and their kids, and they make up only 3% of the population anyway, but that hasn't made a bit of difference to the progressives. They're still wailing and gnashing their teeth and cutting down Canada for its 'systemic racism' and saying everything wrong in minority communities is the fault of white people because of how politically incorrect we were in our past. Even though almost no minorities aside from natives were even in this country then! If you could walk around downtown Toronto or Montreal or even Vancouver when Pierre Trudeau got elected you'd be surrounded by nothing but white people. But we're still supposed to be beating ourselves up over historical racism.

Alberta Also Sucks Now

I used to think that Alberta was the last sane province in Canada, but it too has fallen to the radical left and has achieved loser status:

When are you leaving? Surely there must be someplace on the planet where there is no left wing, where everyone laughs at social justice and the climate isn't changing.

I think you're probably going to find the whole world sucks.

If only there was some way to get rid of all the lefties...I wonder if political angst is an allowable reason for choosing MAID?

Climate change is the best scam going.  A theoretical problem with theoretical solutions that cause real poverty.  Canadians pay through the nose to fight “climate change” while the Yanks don’t and China builds a coal plant every week.  So dumb.

Florida.  We have a place, just need citizenship, but if need be we’ll come back to Canuckistan for 6 months a year.

Apparently rather than having a decent healthcare system, Canadian lefties want to euthanize homeless people and the mentally ill.

the places in the US where they can move and be free of them darn lefties is shrinking. Previous strongholds; Montana, idaho, Utah, Nevada, South Dakota, are seeing sustained population growth and with that comes more liberal politics. If they can handle the cold.. Wyoming and North Dakota are the only places that I can think of where liberalism can be avoided.

Florida and Texas are thriving. Some of the last vestiges of sane America.

Look at the maps on politico... Texas quite a few blue counties. Yes, the red outnumber the blue but as their population grows.. this is going to change. My home state, Idaho, used to be as red as red gets but now there are blue counties where there were none.

Yes, the urban and coastal elites are usually liberal, but the people fleeing blue states are generally red or purple.  Also, the Democrats have banked on immigrant votes, but immigrants actually tend to be more conservative and entrepreneurial.
