America Under pResident Biden

By midmorning, 3,000 flights had been cancelled across the country, about 1,600 of them at Dallas/Fort Worth International and Bush Intercontinental airports in Texas. At DFW, the temperature was 4 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 degrees Celsius) — 3 degrees (-16 degrees) colder than Moscow.

President Joe Biden also declared an emergency in Texas in a statement Sunday night. The declaration is intended to add federal aid to state and local response efforts.

Maybe they can use their guns to shoot the ice?

It’s more Red state mismanagement.

ICYMI from the Future of Republicans thread:

“Compassionate Conservatism” at work LMAO

In conservative paradise, government’s job is to do absolutely nothing, even during a state of emergency, except tweet out drunken rants berating and mocking those in need.  Yet more evidence of the right-wing shitholes the Red states have become

Texas mayor tells residents to fend for themselves during power outage: ‘Only the strong will survive’

By Tuesday morning, the residents of Colorado City, Tex., were getting anxious. More than 24 hours had passed since a deadly Arctic blast knocked out power across the state, leaving them without heat or electricity in below-freezing temperatures. To make matters worse, many also lacked running water, forcing them to haul in heavy buckets of snow each time they needed to flush their toilets.

Residents turned to a community Facebook group to ask whether the small town planned to open warming shelters, while others wondered if firefighters could do their job without water. But when Colorado City’s mayor chimed in, it was to deliver a less-than-comforting message: The local government had no responsibility to help out its citizens, and only the tough would survive.

“No one owes you [or] your family anything,” Tim Boyd wrote on Tuesday in a now-deleted Facebook post, according to KTXS and KTAB/KRBC. “I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout!”

Boyd’s tirade, which also demanded that “lazy” residents find their own ways of procuring water and electricity, immediately drew backlash. Later on Tuesday, Boyd announced his resignation and admitted that he could have “used better wording.”

The controversy highlighted how one of the worst winter storms in decades is testing the limits of the embrace of self-sufficiency and rugged individualism in Texas. The state’s decision to skirt federal oversight by operating its own power grid is one of the main reasons that close to 3.3 million residents in Texas still lacked electricity by early Wednesday morning, while outages in other hard-hit states had dwindled to less than one-tenth of that size. As of late Tuesday, grid operators still couldn’t predict when the lights might turn on, and advocates were warning that Texas’s poorest and most vulnerable residents were at risk of freezing to death. At least 10 deaths in Texas have been linked to the winter storm since Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The failure to deliver basic services has angered countless Texans, including top-ranking elected officials. But in Colorado City, Boyd rejected the notion that municipal governments or utility companies had any obligation to provide paying customers with necessities like heat and running water during a catastrophic winter storm.

Texas shows that when you cannot govern, you lie. A lot.

Incompetence is not the purview of one party. But when you view politics as theater and grievance-mongering, chances are you are going to shortchange governance. Elect a president with no public-sector experience, no interest in learning, no desire to hire competent people and no ability to accept responsibility, and you get something like the covid-19 debacle. Moreover, if your party is hostile to government and exercising regulatory power because it is beholden to a donor class and right-wing ideologues, you will not be prepared for disasters when they strike.

And that brings us to Texas. The Post reports, “As millions of people across Texas struggled to stay warm Tuesday amid massive cold-weather power outages, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) directed his ire at one particular failure in the state’s independent energy grid: frozen wind turbines.” There is one problem: That is not remotely true (as you might have guessed from a state with an enormous oil and gas sector). “The governor’s arguments were contradicted by his own energy department, which outlined how most of Texas’s energy losses came from failures to winterize the power-generating systems, including fossil fuel pipelines.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), who had declared during last summer’s wildfires that California is “unable to perform even basic functions of civilization, like having reliable electricity,” had to eat crow:

Back when the Repubs were the dominant political party in the US....collecting the lion's share of corporate donations and taking over more and more state and local offices with each election, Grover Norquist (leading conservative intellectual) declared during a speech before a CPAC conference, that: "we need to shrink government down to the point where it can be drowned in a bathtub!"

Well, Texas sure provides a great example of the success of that rightwing pro-corporate project. But, what do they do when things go wrong? If government (except for military and policing) is unnecessary interference, what do you do when your deregulated and largely unregulated electrical grid is a dangerous, chaotic mess, and likewise, the poorly regulated collection of power plants (not just wind and solar, but also including natural gas and nuclear power plants, are failing because they weren't equipped to deal with extreme cold).

A larger problem has been that as the GOP went lurching to the right since Lewis Powell wrote his infamous "Powell Memo" 50 years ago, calling on the persecuted rich minority class to work together and use their money to fight labor, consumer activism, and the environmental movement, the Democrats didn't offer much of a pushback. It was more like "how can we get in on this and get some corporate cash too!"  So, California's electrical grid and power stations also have failed under stress, and the Feds aren't much help whether a Dem or Repub is in office....as Joe Biden is showing every day now.....whether new Dem allies in the MSM will report on it or not!

America has been gradually transitioning to failed state status for 40 years as politicians from both parties have handed power from government to corporations and wealthy elites who lurk outside of the spotlight. Corporations and billionaires have simply become too wealthy and powerful relative to the rest of society, the balance of power has irreversibly shifted in their favour.

America is like any number of countless failing kingdoms in history, where US government is like the figurehead monarch who still sits on the throne and laws are still passed in his name but the kingdom is really run by a cabal of mandarins, viziers and local warlords who constantly jockey for power, who in Americas case are the corporations, donors and lobbyists. Nothing short a Bernie Sanders in every elected office could even scratch the surface of the problem and Sanders is unelectable in American society. Unfortunately America is on a one-way trip to shithole country status no matter which party is in power and the Republicans are only making it happen faster

You were talking about anti-Semitism, then you used the fact that a woman was a Trump supporter as evidence of something. You called her "a crackpot Trump supporter". What does support for Trump have to do with anti-Semitism?

FYI you don't get to turn GOP support for Israel into something evil just to suit your own fantasies.

it means that Dem Bill Clinton's China WTO deal policy is a failure. The western world cannot reduce the CCP’s ability to control its vast population. In fact, the western world starts to feel the CCP's iron fist.

Yes, I would say right now, and have been sayin for a couple of years at least, that America is a 3rd World nation with a gigantic, expensive military industrial complex...and not much else.

Now, the problem is that, however we try to kid ourselves up here, how far behind failed state status is Canada right now?  We are not that different than the US. We have a huge and growing federal debt, which our central bank keeps building higher and higher (like the Fed banks south of the border) with no plans besides empty promises to stop the financial bleeding sometime in the future....distant future from the looks of things!

We also are a major global arms merchant and supplier for all of the ongoing wars that the US Empire has opened up in the past 20 years. Our arms sales are consistently about 10% of the US arms shipments totals. And since our population is not much more than 10% of the US, that puts us pretty much on par with the American Empire -- adding more and more fuel to the wars at a time of global pandemic....not to mention that even militaries that aren't actively shooting and dropping bombs have the highest carbon footprints...if anyone is still counting!

And about US politics: I notice a lot of liberals really get twisted out of shape when leftists rake them and their Democrat reps over the coals (same with JT and the Libs on this side), and call us traitors to the cause. If the cause went beyond condemning the latest Trump/Republican outrage, they might have a case. But it's mostly sit down and shut up and accept the watered down compromises we make to win mediocre benefits for the majority of people.

The greatest failure is fake socialist - Bernie, who promised a revolution in 2016 (Our Revolution), which has withered and died since, because he was so obviously dishonest about his intentions and even after being subjected to abuse and lies, still parrots the centrist Democrat line.

So as of now, it looks like the left has nothing to gain from electoral politics, just as the Jan. 6th Capitol Riot showed that those on the right who are facing economic hardships also feel cheated!  The problem with the right, is that they see their way forward by following some messianic leader who has all the answers and will lead them to freedom and prosperity....this time!  And that's how failed states usually end up under fascist control.

More significantly, why is Canada so dependent on a "3rd World" America ?

Why is Canada a U.S. vassal state, regardless of who is president.

I would say that the quality of life is much better for the average Canadian than it is for the average American.  To the extent that we benefit from the US economy and its exploitation of the rapidly deteriorating average American, one could question who are REALLY the vassals.

I'm sure you want to think about it that way, but the numbers and dependencies say otherwise.    The Liberals hated NAFTA...now they desperately love it.

Only one other nation in the world is more dependent on one other nation's economy than is Canada -> USA...that would be Mongolia -> China.

Agreed...those perspectives have shifted and hardened over the years...border has grown much thicker.   Still, there are many Canadians (and Americans) who still understand the nature of the relationship and partnership, regardless of single issues.

"Death to America" would not work out well for Canada.

I've been getting the feeling for at least 30 years that the Constitution...like the Bible, can be interpreted and reinterpreted in whatever ways suit those with power...and money of course!

I would say that the recent rigging and fixing of the past election mostly by funded interests working for Zuck and other multibillionaires for Joe Biden^, is as clear an indication that there is no real equality under the law when small wealthy interests wield that much economic power over everyone else.

^about that election rigging and interference....when Time Magazine already rushes out a featured article bragging about how some Democrat policy think tank experts "fortified" (they won't use the term "rigged") the election win for Biden, hauntingly similar to one they ran about the American help provided to Boris Yeltsin, when he defied all odds to be re-elected in 1995. But, whether you want to call it rigging or 'fortifying', the lesson is clear now that the powers that be don't even feel they have a need to hide the shit they do behind the scenes! They can go ahead and brag about it to reporters from Time, because anything negative will be swept aside in MSM and social media platform news coverage. And once all the rightwing cranks are gone, it will be all about whatever Pravda has to say is the news!
