Guest Posted August 15, 2020 Report Posted August 15, 2020 "Six-foot distance and wearing masks are pagan rituals of satanic worshipers. My kids are Christian and they are not subject to wearing masks."-- parent speaking at Brookfield, Wisconsin school board meeting Well, no wonder people oppose the wearing of masks! It's worshiping Satan!! Hell, if I'd known that I definitely would not have worn one into Horton's yesterday. What must they think of me? Quote
dialamah Posted August 15, 2020 Report Posted August 15, 2020 This is exactly why I wear masks ... it brings out my horns and forked tail, and I have no trouble with distsncing. Best kept secret is that masks = individual power and freedom! Quote

OftenWrong Posted August 16, 2020 Report Posted August 16, 2020 Got a good chuckle this morning. Yesterday heard the news that "Oh my, the virus has re-surged in BC right back up to the level where it peaked a few months ago! What to do!" And speculation they need to go into shutdown again. So today I look up the data- they've reached the same peak alright - 12 cases reported in one day. What can I say- shut it down assholes, shut it all down. Quote

SpankyMcFarland Posted August 18, 2020 Report Posted August 18, 2020 We’ve been waiting for good news on the testing front for a nice while now and there have been many false dawns, but this news from Yale sounds like genuine progress - a test that’s cheap, requires only common reagents, has a short turnaround time of hours, is scalable and, not least, will be open-source. https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/new-saliva-based-covid-19-test-could-be-a-fast-and-cheap-game-changer-1.5066638 https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.08.03.20167791v1.full.pdf+html Quote

OftenWrong Posted August 18, 2020 Report Posted August 18, 2020 CFL cancelled due to coronavirus. But but but, there isn't hardly any. I'm not a football fan, but don't tell me you couldn't space people apart in the giant stadium. Play outdoors then. Not going to make the same big profits this year? So run it at a loss for one year. Big deal. Shutting down in response to the coronavirus is singularly the most stupid thing to do. Shutting down = suicide. Quote
SpankyMcFarland Posted August 18, 2020 Report Posted August 18, 2020 (edited) Some good news (let’s hope) from Yale: FDA approval of a test that’s easy to perform, cheap, quick, reasonably accurate and, very important, open-source so loads of other labs can get in on the act: Current bottlenecks for improving accessibility and scalability of SARS-CoV-2 testing include diagnostic assay costs, complexity, and supply chain shortages. To resolve these issues, we developed SalivaDirect. The critical component of our approach is to use saliva instead of respiratory swabs. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.08.03.20167791v1.full.pdf+html Edited August 18, 2020 by SpankyMcFarland Quote
OftenWrong Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 (edited) Sweden is the winner of the Covid-19 International Tournament. They are the champs. Here's a good one, too. Quote Face masks have emerged as one of the polarising topics of the coronavirus crisis, with Sweden continuing to advise against their use by the general public. What are the rules on face masks in Sweden? Sweden's Public Health Agency says there is no need for members of the public to use face masks when in public spaces such as buses or shops. How does Sweden's stance on face masks compare to the rest of Europe? Despite the absence of masks, their infection rate continues to fall much as ours does. Overall the data for Sweden speaks for itself. It implies that the shutdown did far less than we thought it did in terms of suppressing the spread of Covid 19. We have no firm data on the efficacy of a shutdown, either. But we can make comparisons to some extent due to the alternate way they handled it in Nordic countries. SpankyMcFarland Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 The countries that coped with Covid well were able to quickly switch into a pandemic mode resembling a response to war. Many had a strong culture of considering collective welfare, e.g. East Asian and Northern European states. Testing and tracing ramped up quickly and mask-wearing was not a problem. One thing we know is that more pandemics are coming so we should put right the mistakes we made this time before the next one. When the government so much as suggests, let alone mandates, a public health measure during a plague, people should do what they are told to protect each other. Quote

False. You trust the government to suggest, let alone mandate. Yet they have proven themselves completely inept in this matter. Because the government is a political entity. Quote

SpankyMcFarland Posted August 20, 2020 Report Posted August 20, 2020 More evidence on the morbidity associated with COVID, the so-called ‘long-haulers’: Quote Lauren Nichols has been sick with COVID-19 since March 10, shortly before Tom Hanks announced his diagnosis and the NBA temporarily canceled its season. She has lived through one month of hand tremors, three of fever, and four of night sweats. When we spoke on day 150, she was on her fifth month of gastrointestinal problems and severe morning nausea. She still has extreme fatigue, bulging veins, excessive bruising, an erratic heartbeat, short-term memory loss, gynecological problems, sensitivity to light and sounds, and brain fog. Even writing an email can be hard, she told me, “because the words I think I’m writing are not the words coming out.” She wakes up gasping for air twice a month. It still hurts to inhale. Tens of thousands of people, collectively known as “long-haulers,” have similar stories. I first wrote about them in early June. Since then, I’ve received hundreds of messages from people who have been suffering for months—alone, unheard, and pummeled by unrelenting and unpredictable symptoms. “It’s like every day, you reach your hand into a bucket of symptoms, throw some on the table, and say, ‘This is you for today,’” says David Putrino, a neuroscientist and a rehabilitation specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital who has cared for many long-haulers. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/08/long-haulers-covid-19-recognition-support-groups-symptoms/615382/ Quote
