How Fake News Goes Viral

They exist in the marketplace, but local media is what dominates.

With a few subsidized or mandated exceptions, local cable & broadcast channels would not survive on local media alone.   Local newsrooms are often loss leaders.  Local media does not dominate motion pictures or business news, entertainment news, or female demographic talk shows/soaps.

You said News channels, then you said American TV networks, then you said print media. Now this. Why don't you stop moving the goal posts?

Local news IS the news. The local newspapers, the local news radio station, the local network affiliate's news department. Here in Winnipeg, if you want to know what's happening, you look for the Sun, The Free Press, CJOB, CBC, Global, etc. You don't go searching out the New York Times, USA Today, or CNN or NPR. CJOB (news talk radio) in particular is the top of the ratings charts and the highest earning station on the prairies. There are several similar stations across the country.

Because the goal posts are moving....traditional channels and media outlets are changing.  Local print is dying.  Local television is less hard news and more content.

YouTube is not based in Winnipeg, neither is Twitter.   American shows do penetrate daytime programming (The Talk, The View, The Chew, Dr. Phil, soap operas ).

Fake news is easier to distribute because nearly anyone can do it, and Canada uses the "channels" that are available.

The news content being consumed on any of those platforms is still predominantly from local sources. People are still checking their local news station's page. not the one for USA Today.

I don't know anyone who checks USA Today in my U.S. city either.   But they do check Facebook...which is also not based in Winnipeg.

But yes, if you want to claim fake news as being an American phenomenon, I'll give you that one.

American media have very broad First Amendment rights, without hate speech laws or other regulatory prohibitions seen in Canada.   After peeking at CKND (Global) Winnipeg's weekday schedule listing for today (12/6), lots of American programming is offered early morning, daytime, and in prime time.  It is unclear to me how the CRTC would handle "fake news" from such American programming.

All this fake news nonsense is all about going after and trying to get rid of the Alternative media, and nothing more. If one supports Hillary, and the websites that support and promote her than what they say or report is not fake news. If a website is supporting and promoting Trump, than what they say and report is just fake news.

At least that is the way I see things.

This is how Snopes.com prosecuted fake news about Trump tweeting that Canadians are "Snow Mexicans":

http://www.snopes.com/donald-trump-called-canadians-snow-mexicans/

Snopes.com propagated the fake news but labeled it as "FAKE".   This way they can use the click bait and refute the story at the same time.   Win-win.

I found it interesting that some Canadians found the fake tweet to be very derisive, as if being compared to Mexicans is a bad thing.

We have been talking about Universities limiting speech and censorship.  Here's another institution that is trying to lock down dissent:

Quote

Likely in response to the 25-hour sit-in staged by Democrats earlier in 2016, protesting the lack of gun reform, House Speaker Paul Ryan has proposed new fines and ethics violations for House members that take photo and video from the floor of the chamber

It's from a Blog but supported by Bloomberg here:

Except for Quebec, U.S. based content remains the prime time draw for revenue, complete with simsub.

A large percentage of "U.S. based content" is filmed in Canada. All we have to do is put up a few flags and blue postboxes and you American's lap it up.

A large percentage of U.S. based content is filmed around the world....and in outer space too.   It is still financed with U.S. dollars.
