What policy do you want regarding posting images here at MLW? Take your pick:

1) multi-media forbidden anywhere in the forum; inline links only;

2) multi-media permitted everywhere in the forum;

3) multi-media permitted only in the lower forums; inline links only in the upper forums;

4) multi-media permitted everywhere in the forum; forced thumb-nails; click to expand in new window;

Any other choices?

I voted number two.......clearly so called "image trolling" is subjective, as such, should be dealt with like any other forms of "trolling". With that, if one considers honest discourse as an exchange of information and ideas, enabling pics/videos/graphs/maps etc is but an extension of that exchange....text books and manuals etc contain images alongside text after all.

Of the forums I belong to, including several professional bodies, I've never seen such a hang-up or restriction placed on the exchange of information.....I can't speak for others, but my interest in this forum has waned due to such unneeded restrictions..........as they say though, not my forum, not my rules.

I'd say images permitted everywhere, videos permitted only in the "lower forums". Given the choices, I picked #2 in the poll.

Also, while you're on images, there is an issue with posting links to images that are in the .svg format (many graphics on wikipedia are in this format). If you have some time, would be great if that could be looked into.

I rarely click on a link to YouTube except if it relates to music. Most of the YouTube videos posted here are garbage with nothing to back up whatever is being touted. However, I did vote #2.

Charles I just want to commend you on making this poll and (i assume) taking the opinions of the users of this site into consideration regarding how we should use the site. Should happen more often frankly.

#4 is a good compromise.

I voted for a thumbnail display, but it should be based on the byte size of the image. I don't care about screen real-estate, I care about data transferred. If someone posts a large graph that compresses down due to lots of white space then no problem, I just don't want to download someones cat video by default.

Only because you disagree with the consensus right? What's wrong with having the actual people using the site having input on how the forum they use should work?

We are giving this:

4) multi-media permitted everywhere in the forum; forced thumb-nails; click to expand in new window;

a test run.

What do you think?

I'd make the thumbnails bigger so it's possible to see what's in the linked image before clicking it. The thumbnails right now are so tiny it's hard to tell what the image is before clicking it. I'd make them roughly 2x the current size, if possible.

How do I put a thumbnail? Does it come with a thumbnail automatically?

just post the picture as usual and it will automatically become a thumbnail.
