The Iowa Caucus is an electoral event in which residents of the U.S. state of Iowa meet in precinct caucuses in all of Iowa's 1,681/1,682 precincts and elect delegates to the corresponding county conventions. There are 99 counties in Iowa, and thus there are 99 conventions.

The way they are run is interesting and different. A 60 second video will give you a good overview:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2016/01/28/learn-how-iowa-caucuses-work-60-seconds/79468974/

These selection processes can take up to two hours.

This is VERY different from jumping in a car, driving to a voting area, ticking off your choice and still be home to see the last part of the movie. This takes a lot of dedication and only those very motivated bother to submit their choices. Considering the process, the candidates having the most passionate supporters will come out winners.

There might also be a snow storm that evening.

Under those conditions, who do you think will do well and who will, bust?

Who knows. Iowa looks like a toss-up for the Democrats b/n Clinton and Sanders. Haven't been following the GOP in Iowa closely.

Thanks for the video link. It's always been odd that the primaries are held at scattered dates throughout the country. It gives certain states who do it earlier more influence than others.

I'd have to go with Clinton winning, and at this point Trump. Although I think there's a reasonable chance that Cruz or even Rubio could win.

I dunno, Trump is like a GOP version of Obama from 2008. People want change from the status quo, and they think he can bring it. They seem willing to even put up with the sideshow because of that hope.

I think America is in a lot of trouble and heading down the path towards self-destruction if they keep going. If you look at the polls, Americans know it too. Most of them just don't yet understand the source of the problem, which is that corporations, their lobbies, and other rich special interests have bought off Congress and the White House.

Yeah, because that has never happened in the past. What a shame.....

I'll take a guess -

Trump followed by Rubio followed by Cruz. Less than 10% between each.

Hillary 6% ahead of Sanders.

Sounds like a good prediction.

The Iowa caucus system works differently for Republicans than for Democrats. It's crazy for Republicans but even crazier for Democrats. But on either side of the aisle, it's a "straw poll". NH is a better measure, combined with SC.

I note that this year, the Iowa caucus is held only a week before NH. They moved it later.

I felt slightly ill just now listening to Hilary on the radio shouting about how progressive she is and how she's all about fighting inequality. While filling her pockets with speaking fees for no-media-allowed visits with Wall Street bankers.

No need to be ill....nobody is forced to listen. It's a political campaign process in foreign country.

But Canada, yeah I get it.

If that makes you sick, don't look back in her past. You would need a bigger bucket.

Huge turnouts tonight. Doesn't bode well for Hillary but probably does for trump.

Most people have to earn a living.

Most people do, but not Hilary. She wouldn't need to earn another penny even if she lives to be 200.

I just find her incredibly disingenuous. She sees Sanders' pitch for Wall Street reform resonates with voters, and she starts running around shouting "heeey! I'm tough on Wall Street too! I'm super-tough on Wall Street!" People point out that bankers and hedge fund managers are shoveling money into her campaign like coal into a steam engine boiler, and she starts yelling about how it's because of 9/11 that they support her. People want to know what goes on at her press-only audiences with Goldman-Sachs, and she starts hollering about "young people" and how "progressive" she is.

It just makes me feel cynical about her.

If Sanders is a self-proclaimed socialist, Surely Hillary will pander to anyone right of that - and that does include bankers. She has been masterful at lining her pockets and extending her political career despite being the embodiment of what people hate about politicians.

She has the middle age and older women vote for sure, the younger women who aren't as invested in her see right through her though.

A lot of Sanders support comes from young people. Both men and women.

Still a ways to go, but Rubio is looking pretty strong in third, right on the heels of Trump........if this strong third place finish holds true, and Trump can be brought down to Earth, Rubio is in a good position once the other establishment (Bush, Kasich, Chrisite) guys drop out, and I expect back Rubio.

I agree, I was pointing more to Hillary's demographic being older women. But yeah, younger people of both sexes are leaning away from Hillary and towards Sanders. Young people are inherently socialist by nature.

As I check, it's showing Clinton at 50.1% and Sanders at 49.2%, but it shows both with 19 delegates. I gather that on the Democrat side Iowa isn't a "winner take all" state?
