Shady
Violence is contributing to people's deaths by shortchanging the healthcare system when you avoid paying your share of the taxes. I don't know what that means. Paying the required tax amount under the law isn't shortchanging anything.
Freddy
Yeah, I understand the theory, but that's not what's going on in Montreal. This isn't rioting or demonstrating by the down and out downtrodden hopeless proletariat. These are largely college students with their minds wrapped in leftist ideology. They're the same bunch which have been causing disturbances across college campuses for the last several years. I'm not so sure about that. I think the down and out hopeless proletariat still live and act like college students and so it's hard to distinguish between the two. jacee
What's disgusting is the violence committed by these thugs. Just because you find a law "illegitimate" doesn't mean it is, and it doesn't give somebody the right to commit violent acts. Everybody has to follow the same rules, no matter if capitalism is being protested, or abortion. Your view of this is completely juvenile. If everybody resorted to violence as a result of so-called illegitimate laws, then we'd have anarcy. What we have in Montreal is suppression of dissent. And legitimate anger at that suppression. Dissent is a right. Declaring protests illegal immediately, and immediately dispersing protesters with horses and tear gas ... is anarchy. . Nope, not at all. Organize your protest properly and such problems go away. But public officials have property rights, logistics, as well as public health and safety concerns to take into consideration when protests are involved. It's just not all about the protestors, even though they probably think of themselves as pretty special.

We all short change purchases like the F35.s, senate expenses, MP's salaries and pensions and of course gas plants not being built and such. I do not lose much sleep over ripping off the government. They have been ripping me off since I was born

Bryan
If violent dissent happens, a greater level of violence will be used to disperse it. The only people it helps is those who do window repair for a living. As an added bonus, the protesters gain new enemies from the general public who previously had no dog in the fight. kimmy
It's pretty damned pointless to smash windows at Starbucks. The way to affect change is to get the federal government to change the tax laws. I personally don't know anyone who wouldn't support such changes. And, btw, I happen to be a shareholder in Starbucks. Btw, the cost to repair damages is also a tax writeoff. So the taxpayer winds up paying. I'm not saying it's smart, I'm just saying I understand why people are angry. All of this stuff-- offshoring jobs, corporate tax avoidance, temporary foreign workers, rising tuition fees, austerity measures-- all of it is basically a result of people who got to the top pulling the ladder up behind them. If you pull the ladder up behind you, the people stuck at the bottom are going to be mad. The way to affect change is to get the federal government to change the tax laws. The politicians who are in charge of this stuff are probably shareholders in Starbucks too. It's the only explanation as to why they'd rather save nickels and dimes by cutting jobs at Revenue Canada rather than investing in the resources to pursue tax cheats. Hoping for change from Ottawa is pointless. I think the more likely avenue is public shaming of these deadbeats, kind of like happened to the Royal Bank and McDonalds with the foreign workers. -k Edited May 4, 2015 by kimmy

Freddy
Because socialism is about totalitarian tyrannies. It always ends that way. Because you need to motivate humans somehow. If it's not self interest, "capitalism",then it's out of fear, "tyranny". What way do you want your government motivating you? There isn't 1000 ways. If you can only relate to motivation from self-interest, or fear then that's a kind of psychopathy I think. I gave my seat to an old lady on the subway because I thought she might knife me, but when she sat down I put out my hand for a $20 bill but it never came ! That would explain why so many psychopath do very well in this society. Please explain how we can motivate people to produce something everyday, without the use of rewards or punishment.
