Michael Hardner Posted May 5, 2015 Report Posted May 5, 2015 Please explain how we can motivate people to produce something everyday, without the use of rewards or punishment. All I'm saying is it's not a binary choice. If you really feel in your heart that it IS, then it's probably something about the way you see the world. No, I'm pointing out the irony that these kids are protesting for a more socialistic existence, like the people of the republic of China are enjoying at this very moment.I'm suggesting that instead of protesting, they could simply move to China where it already is very socialist, like they seem to prefer. kimmy Posted May 16, 2015 Report Posted May 16, 2015 What are you talking about kimmy? We had a federal surplus when Harper took over. . You are confusing "debt" and "deficit". Deficit is our income minus our expenditures (ie, the government spending more than its revenue in a year.) Surplus is the opposite (ie, the government's revenue for the year exceeds expenditures.) Debt is the sum of our deficits over time. ie, if you run a $10 billion dollar deficit for 10 years in a row, you have a $100 billion dollar debt. If you then run $10 billion surpluses for two years and use the surplus to reduce the debt, then you still have an $80 billion debt. We ran surpluses for a few years under Paul Martin, but it wasn't nearly enough to erase decades of deficit spending and debt accumulated going back to Trudeau and Mulroney. Martin's few years of surpluses was a drop in the bucket compared to the accumulated debt. There may have been a budget surplus when Harper took over, but there was also a $500 billion dollar debt. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
Wilber Posted May 16, 2015 Report Posted May 16, 2015 I've seen Walmart,KFC,Pizza Hut, 7-11, McDonalds in mainland China. Now those are western companies. Many other private companies in China. GostHacked Posted May 17, 2015 Report Posted May 17, 2015 Apparently, you don't believe in democracy. The city council is duly elected, and passed a law, which, i might add, is very strongly supported by the electorate. Giving notice of a route enables police to redirect traffic and try to keep the disruption of citizens' travel and business to a minimum. Springing up without notice and blocking traffic is illegal pretty much in every municipality in the world. The fact these people were basically brainless thugs who just wanted to smash things and cause trouble, and had no real agenda other than that, should indicate their 'protest' was without value. The best case scenario would be for all of them to be arrested and trucked out into the country to spend the summer in forced labour working on farms. A protest is supposed to be inconvenient for others. It's how the point gets across. However I do not agree with trashing cars, windows and such. There are proper ways to do this without putting yourself into a position where the 'authorities' can detain you. GostHacked Posted May 17, 2015 Report Posted May 17, 2015 Hoping for change from Ottawa is pointless. Big Guy Posted May 17, 2015 Report Posted May 17, 2015 To GostHacked - I agree that the intention of a protest is to create an inconvenience - but an inconvenience to the targets of the protest. I have been caught in numerous protests from a rolling highway protest to picket lines to having to detour around a highway blockage. In every case, it has resulted in my opposing the position of the protesters. I do not know of anyone who has been "inconvenienced" and the process has resulted in a change in which the "inconvenienced" has switch to a position supporting the issue of the protesters. I have found that the reverse usually happens. I live in an area of Ontario which has been negotiating with aboriginals over a variety of issues. I was originally sympathetic to their cause and voiced an opinion in support. A few years ago, some jackasses from the reserve decided to blow up a hydro station resulting in us losing power for three days and about $200 in frozen food. Not only have they lost my support but I take every opportunity to condemn them. I have since supported politicians who oppose land claims. I am not sure what your standard of an "inconvenience " entails. What do you feel is an acceptable level? Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
