There are many other places you can add new threads. OR you can keep on complaining about those threads you don't like.

You have the power!

Or as Mulroney said to Turner, "sir, you had the option."

  • Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone."
  • Always remember that when you are in the right you can afford to keep your temper, and when you are in the wrong you cannot afford to lose it. - J.J. Reynolds.
  • Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location?
  • The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

Maybe we could talk about Israel for a change....

I would like to but every time I react to a particularly irritating and unpleasant poster, he runs to the mods and my post disappears and I get another warning point.

I am now the proud owner of 14 warning points - each earned in the defense of good taste and calling a duck a duck. I have never reported any poster to the mods for any crap directed at me and have no intention to do so. I believe those who insult others must have the courage to accept criticism in return rather than running to the mods like a petulant child in a recess period. But some posters have courage and others have yet to mature.

I was ready to thank the mods for my 14 points until I found out that these warning points are not like bit coins to be traded and used for financial gain. A real bummer! I have no doubt that this easily identified, irritating poster will read this post run to the mods once more. In anticipation I am assessing that childish poster 1 Big Guy Bozo point. Also - Because the mods have assessed Big Guy a warning point for calling a duck a duck I am suspending MLW from my desktop for 2 days.

Sorry, there are no appeals, and the suspension will be enforced until Friday June 8, 9:21 a.m.

Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

I need to step my game up. Mind if I call you a troll?

Don't tell me you're down in single figures too?

I think everyone should post their warning points in their signatures.

Mind if I call you a troll?

Is that like calling me a TAXI? No need, I have the unter* app.

*unter - Since TAXIs ride on top of bridges and trolls live under them I use unter instead of über.

smallc, but you're lame (in a very good way of course).

What did you do, quote the whole OP again?

I got suspended 4 times I think. Maybe 5. There was 3 one month suspensions, and a one day suspension. There might have been a week long one too. I got a few other warnings, not sure what they were for.

The last warning point was for quoting trolls. MH gave it to me. Neither he nor I knew what he was referring to.

You badass! :o :o

I've never seen you post anything remotely suspension-worthy.

Earlier a poster was saying that they post less because of lack of variety and I think the lack of variety is actually symptom of a bigger issue. We regurgitate the same arguments because it's always the same players.

I have 1 warning from Greg that I earned long ago. I recall clearly how I earned it and I am still ashamed of what I did to deserve it.

All of us have posted something that would be classified as distasteful .....

LOL Nearly 99% of what I read is distasteful, in my opinion ----- everybody included!

This medium is an anonymous game where many posters are allowed to vent distasteful attitudes -

LOL Of all the various forms of "media" out there, MLW is probably the most benign I have ever encountered.

Is Greg's project for grad school somewhere on the web? I would be interested in reading it.

I am not sure "project for grad school" is an accurate representation but here it is: MapleLeafWeb Surprise!

Greg plans to revive the main site. He is exploring a couple of innovative ideas but not ready to commit yet to any timeline. Stay tuned.

SHORT VERSION: MLW will be an up-to-date resource for Canadian political discourse and history.

Though I do believe that many of the rules (no cross-posting, no images, trim your replies, etc) are a product of that original product. He may have been reporting people's posts in his project at the time and this made it easier to work with people's posts as "data."

LOL No. There has been none of that. The forum posts are not the basis of any study. I doubt that will ever happen in the future.

Greg's plans for the main site do not need the forum.

One thing that I think the moderators should seriously consider is revisiting the Forum Rules and Guidelines for the current state of the forum. Let's be honest though, that's probably never going to happen.

What do you recommend?

With all the deleting and warnings and suspensions it's obviously more than just people shooting the shit. Can't have it both ways.

Yes, we can!

The board is moderated like it were some serious publication, then it gets treated by the readership as such.

What constitutes a serious publication, in your opinion?

That's correct, she's not a moderator, she's a forum facilitator. This is what she said is her role, post 1835 on this thread:

"A few points... this will be on a trial basis. I won't even have super-powers. I have been asked by Mike and Charles to help promote good discussion, discourage people from bad behavior, and generally be a snitch and goody two-shoes."

She is supposed to promote good discussion and discourage bad behavior [sic], and I don't see how things like "progressives are heartbroken at the prospect of fewer brown-people entering Britain" does either of those things. Quite the opposite, it's very inflammatory.

Controversial opinions aren't bad behaviour. She was chosen because she abides by the forum rules, of which includes treating other posters with respect and politeness when conversing. She's a good example for posters to follow, regardless of your ideological stripe. So stop trying to censor her. Like she said, if she broke the rules then report it or discuss the rules with her, not the political correctness of her opinions.

To all people complaining about trolling: after many years of failed efforts on my part, realize that no matter what you say you will not convince the mods to stop the trolling around here. We need a different tactic, & one that will work. As it says under my name, don't feed the trolls! A troll puts their bait out and people seem to bite every time. Trolls are literally trolling for a bite, ie: they purposely post inflammatory comment looking for a rise out of you so they can get their laughs. If nobody takes the bait, the troll will be having no fun and will go away. If you take the bait and engage the troll, they win, and you're the fool!

So don't engage a troll....EVER. If you see a troll post, ignore it. Better yet, put them on ignore and never speak to them unless they reform their ways. It might be hard sometimes, but it's the only way things will change around here. Remember ALWAYS, a troll wants you to take the bait. Don't be the fool! I'll bet Charles will even agree with me on this one.

Anyone with me?

How do you tell? Answer me honestly, have I ever trolled? I ask out of genuine curiosity, because what I think is trolling might well not be.

I did discuss it with her after she changed her wording. It didn't take place on this thread, but it went on for pages.

And no, this is not about censorship, censorship would be me trying to keep Betsy from expressing her opinions because I disagree with them.

My issue wasn't with *what* kimmy said, if anyone else had said them I would just roll my eyes. My issue was specifically about a forum facilitator (chosen to promote healthy discussion) making incindiery comments.

I stand by that.

I agree with you. It's the familiarity here and the "umbilical cord" that keeps some of us coming back.

At another forum, it's amazing the numerous topics on Religion section. Some are eye-brow raising.....but the thing is, our tastes differ, so there's always somebody responding. I cannot possibly respond to a lot of them - or I'll be glued forever.

I've just exiled myself from another forum where I spent so many hours a day that I think it was like an addiction.

I was "clean" for a month before I came back here. I recently posted a few times there (no, not in Religion), but don't want to get sucked right back in.

But yes, it's stale here the way it is now.

Hi guys, I would just like to mention that I suck.

As you've probably noticed I have been around very little of late as I have been dealing with some personal things. As a result I haven't had much time or inclination to contribute to the forum, and have been completely useless as a forum facilitator.

I'm not sure when I'll be ready to be an active contributor and facilitator again, but for right now I won't be very active around here. Sorry for not being around to help out.
