First season was soooo much better. I enjoyed the second season but the first will be very hard to ever match

I heard a lot of people felt the same way about season 2. On its own, it would have probably been ok, but after season 1, a let-down.

Lately I've been watching summer sci-fi series:

-Defiance (SyFy, 3rd season.) The premise is that in the near future a fleet of aliens arrive at earth seeking to conquer it to be their new home (I believe their old homeworld was destroyed, I forget the details.) Everybody lost the resulting war... the alien fleet was destroyed, most of human civilization is in tatters as well. Defiance is set decades after the invasion, in the town of Defiance (near where St Louis used to be) where survivors of the war, humans and the various alien races, live together in an uneasy peace. Its blend of post-apocalyptic earth and space aliens makes it seem somewhat like a mash-up of Farscape and Road Warrior. It's tolerable, but not exactly brilliant. They've done a good job in fleshing out the culture of some of the alien races, and some of the characters are quite entertaining.

-Dominion (season 2, SyFy). This series is based on the movie Legion of a few years back. In Legion, God decided to rage-quit on humans again, but instead of another Great Flood, he just sends legions of angels to wipe everybody out. The archangel Michael fights to thwart this plan; he's learned that a woman is pregnant with a baby who will grow to be the savior of the human race. I haven't seen Legion, but I gather Michael was able to save the baby, because in Dominion, we pick up the plot 25 years later when savior-baby is all grown up. Humanity clings to survival in a few heavily defended cities like Vega (formerly Las Vegas). God is nowhere to be found, even the angels can't hear him anymore. Michael continues to help the humans; the archangel Gabriel has carried on the war to exterminate humanity, believing it's the only way to bring God back. The lower-caste angels all support Gabriel; they're zombie-like creatures who have taken possession of human bodies. Most of the higher caste angels support Gabriel as well, though Michael does have at least one on his side. A third archangel, Uriel, is also in the mix, but it's unclear which, if any, side she supports. Savior-baby has grown up to be Alex, a bad-ass commando guy in Vega's army, who only just found out he's "the Chosen One." He doesn't know how he's supposed to save the world or anything, but he's got magical tattoos on his body, and he's slowly learning to decypher them. It's ... well, it's not exactly high art, but I find it entertaining. It has Anthony Head as one of the human villains, a ruthless civic leader in Vega. If you ever wondered what Giles from Buffy The Vampire Slayer would be like if he was a scumbag politician with a Texas drawl, this is your show.

-Killjoys (first season, SyFy/Space co-production). It's a space shoot-em-up adventure, set in a solar system with four inhabited planets on the brink of a class war. The main characters are a group of three bounty-hunters, or "killjoys". It stars Aaron Ashmore (from Warehouse 13) as Johnny Jacobi, a tech expert. He's the junior member of the team, but still more than capable in a fight. Johnny is the only member of the team who's really all that sane. His brother Davin Jacobi is a discharged soldier with PTSD and flashback issues... he's an unstoppable fighting machine, but he's got some mental issues that they're trying to get sorted out. The leader of the group is "Dutch", a woman who was raised in some kind of zany cult harem where she was trained to be an assassin from the time she was a toddler. She's got some issues as well. She escaped from the cult... except she really didn't. As they try to execute their warrants-- which range from simple cargo transport to apprehending fugitives to salvage to -- well, there's a variety... we also learn more about the characters and the setting. It's only 7 episodes in, but I quite like this show so far.

If anyone enjoys mech anime, in addition to Aldnoah Zero as I mentioned earlier, I recommend the following mech anime which came out recently:

- Cross Ange: This one is very different. I'm not sure how accurate 'feminist mech anime' is. It's almost game-of-thrones-esque in terms of how much psychological abuse some of the characters receive.

- Sidonia no Kishi

- Valvrave the Liberator

I never really got into anime. I remember enjoying "Outlaw Star" once upon a time, that was a fun space themed shoot-em-up kind of thing, and I remember watching "Witch Hunter Robin" and thinking it had potential, but most of the series I've seen have been too awful to watch more than an episode of, and I kind of gave up on the whole genre pretty much. I have heard that "Attack of Titans" is pretty good, so maybe I will check that out.

Things that always confuse me about anime:

-why do Japanese girls look like Caucasian girls in anime?

-why do Japanese boys look like Caucasian girls in anime?

-why are the key figures in world-shaking drama always attending the same middle-school in Japan?

-why is it that the only people able to operate giant war machines always happen to be adolescents?

They don't. The reason you think this is because you are used to associating in your brain certain traits with caucasian. Most Japanese people think Japanese anime characters look primarily Japanese. It's all about perception.

-why are the key figures in world-shaking drama always attending the same middle-school in Japan?

No idea. It's a stupid cliche. I guess it sells in Japan.

-why is it that the only people able to operate giant war machines always happen to be adolescents?

Not always. But I guess it sells.

A better question might be how it makes sense to have giant flying humanoid war machines since they aren't very very aerodynamic. I just ignore that.

Same reason aliens always seem to prefer US cities in US movies and TV and British cities in British movies and TV.

Maybe it's just the idea that everything HBO is great but I'm enjoying this.

Mayor Nick Wasicsko took office in 1987 during Yonkers' worst crisis. When federal courts ordered public housing be built in the white, middle class side of town, it divided the city in a bitter battle fueled by fear, racism, murder and politics.

I will defintiely check this out, if only because Oscar Isaac is a lead actor.

That guy is on a serious roll the last couple of years, does a superior job in every movie..

I picked up Mr. Robot through AppleTV. The first episode is available and the rest will be available as it airs on Showcase. One episode in and this is already my new favourite show. Conservatives will hate it.

I've been watching the documentary series Apocalypse WW1 on the Knowledge Network. Amazing old footage, colorized and with sound added. The fairly non judgemental account of events and sentiments leading up to the conflict is probably most remarkable thing about the series.

I caught an old HBO miniseries from last year (2014) - Olive Kitteridge - with Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins and short scenes from Bill Murray. Excellent in every way. Don't let them tell you films about old people are dull.

Of this season's new network TV programs, the only one that I have been watching is Blindspot.

It's about a woman (played by Jaime Alexander, best known as Lady Sif from the Thor movies) who wakes up naked, in a duffel bag, in Times Square, with no memories... and her body is covered in fresh tattoos. Most prominent of the tattoos is one that proclaims "Kurt Weller FBI", who is assigned to her case. It quickly becomes apparent that the tattoos on her body are clues to be decyphered. So far each tattoo has led them to a case involving classified government information, so the question of who would have access to all the information that has been put onto her body becomes quite a concern, particularly for Kurt's boss, who has been involved in some shady dealings that one of Jane Doe's tattoos points at.

Jane Doe retains memory of many skills-- she speaks Chinese and is apparently an expert in martial arts and marksmanship-- but she only fleeting glimpses of her life before all of this happened to her. Each episode while they solve the tattoo riddle of the week, they also make a little progress into unwrapping the bigger mystery-- who she is, who did this to her. I like that they have managed to convey a sense of vulnerability for her. Her prior life was erased, her body has been violated, she has no friends, and the only people she knows have all spent hours studying every inch of her naked body. The writers haven't lost sight of what a disturbing, humiliating situation this would be for her.

I have been enjoying Blindspot so far... it joins The Blacklist as the only show I'm watching weekly right now.

Yeah, I was a little put off by the language at first, but the dialogue as a whole was brilliant.

I hope they do make a film. The last series I wanted to last longer followed up with a film. "Serenity".

That helped.

'Deadwood' is based on a wonderful book of the same name by Pete Dexter.

All the same characters, but of course much shorter than 4 or 5 seasons worth of material.

That book led me to read several others by Dexter, all of them worthy reads. The man can write.

Wentworth is an amazing show, it's a prison drama you can find on Netflix. It's made by an Australian network so it hasn't gone big in North America, but great reviews and everyone I know who's watched it loves it. Liked it much better than Narcos and even better than Game of Thrones which I got into recently. Great pacing, characters, acting. Give the 1st episode a try and you'll probably be hooked.

If you liked that and haven't already, you should read The Guns of August.

Ash Vs The Evil Dead premiered Halloween. Already signed for a second season. Best Halloween ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found that series to be wonderfully strange. I think there may be a film coming, too.

I hope a Deadwood movie is pulled off. It never had a chance to end. HBO cut it a season to early
