I did some reading about them. It turns out that Tedeschi Trucks is not, in fact, a brand of vehicle, or even a dealership. The band is named after Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. They met in 2001, when the "Susan Tedeschi Band" and the "Derek Trucks Band" were playing at the same festival. They married shortly afterward, but kept their bands separate. Finally, in 2010, they decided to merge their bands... I am imagining this is the married musicians equivalent of getting a joint bank account. They named their newly merged band ... (wait for it) ... "the Derek Trucks And Susan Tedeschi Band".

I imagine they shortened the name after numerous unsuccessful attempts to fit "the Derek Trucks And Susan Tedeschi Band" on t-shirts and CD covers.

Interesting about Derek Trucks: in addition to his own Trucks Band related endeavors, he also played with later incarnations of the Allman Brothers Band for many years. Which seems fitting, because Derek's uncle was a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band.

This song has been covered countless times in genres from rock to country to reggae, but the original recording is by far my favorite.

Midnight Rider, featuring Uncle Butch Trucks on drums.

I did. She has a great voice, although the song is not entirely up my alley-- a little too "country" for my tastes.

Seems like they have kept producing through the years, but this Electric album to me is quite fantastic. It is still overall a Pet Shop Boys album, but they are starting to experiment with heavier synths and beats. The melodies and the harmonization pleases me! I think it's their best work yet since, Please.

Oh wow that's cool, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info! I've heard of Derek Trucks but not too familiar with his work or the work of the Allman Brothers.

Me neither, I only found out when I started reading about him. It was kind of a coincidence because I've been into Allman Brothers lately... so things collided in an unexpected way.

Time for more music!

First off, some Creedence Clearwater Revival. Everybody knows CCR! They make happy, up-tempo toe-tapping songs that last 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Right? Doo-doo-doo, lookin' out my backdoor!

Wellllll, they also have some darker material in their shed. People are probably familiar with "Run Through The Jungle" and "Put A Spell On You" ... but this eery track is one that I'd never heard until I stumbled across it on a Youtube playlist. It's called "Effigy" and I think this is pretty great:

And this little ditty is one Lynyrd Skynyrd song many people probably haven't heard. It's certainly not on the radio, so probably only fans are familiar with it. It's a traditional-sounding song, with a four-bar lyrical structure, acoustic guitar, and harmonica. It describes the travel plans of the titular Mississippi Kid.

To make a long story short, the Kid is planning a trip to Alabama to visit his lady friend and obtain some of her delicious corn bread. However, the Kid is clearly anticipating trouble, because he is bringing his weapons and sending out this musical message to any Alabama residents who might try to waylay him. Basically, his message is "I am well armed, I am a formidable character, and if you attempt to cause me trouble, you may find yourself in grievous circumstances." That's the gist of his message. It seems simple enough.

But upon closer consideration, perhaps there is more to the story. Why is he anticipating trouble? Has he done something to earn an unsavory reputation in Alabama? Why is he so heavily armed for what seems, on the surface, like a harmless trip? Is it possible that this "corn bread" his lady friend has waiting for him might actually be moonshine or narcotics or some other kind of contraband? Is that why this "corn bread" is so highly sought after?

What aren't you telling us, Mississippi Kid?

This has been on my radio lately:

The song was commissioned by the Chrysler company to use in commercials for their Jeep Renegade vehicle. How does that make you feel? Does it make you mad? Appalled by the cynical commercialism of art?

The song is actually pretty catchy. Still mad?

Ok, well, it's worth pointing out that in days of yore, getting a commission from a wealthy patron was one of the few ways for a composer to earn money. Writing a song for Chrysler is actually following in a grande olde tradition. Does that make you less mad?

Ok, well, having their song played on TV has actually been a huge promotional boost for the Ambassadors. It's generated a ton of interest and turned "Renegades" into by far the biggest success of their career. And that shouldn't be a surprise, because getting a song included in an ad or a TV show or a video game can be a huge boost for a band.

A prime example of a band scoring a huge break after their song got picked up for an advertising campaign: Cage the Elephant. "No Rest for the Wicked" gained little notice when it was first released in 2008. But a year later it got picked up as the theme song and advertising campaign for the "Borderlands" video game, and Cage The Elephant were overnight famous.

Among my too-many podcast subscriptions, I collect NPR's All Songs Considered to see if there's anything new that I might like....and if not, the hosts - Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton are usually fun to listen to anyway.

Scrolling down the page to their Aug. 25th episode, I've listened to this show a couple of times, and what really jumped out at me was a song they played about 10 minutes into the show, from a small indie group with no record label calling themselves Sjowgren. The song "seventeen" is an instantly catchy pop song that sounds like a cross between some of the girl pop groups of the mid-60's and 80's new wave...or maybe it's just me. Anyway, one thing Bob Boilen really got right is Sjowgren isn't making it easy for anyone to follow them by having such a difficult name. When I got home, I couldn't find anything matching showgrin on Youtube or any search, so I had to cue up the show again and hear Bob spell out the name for me...as I typed it in: s-j-o-w-g-r-e-n and finally pulled it up on Youtube.

Anyway, give it a listen if you have the time, and ask the most common question on the Youtube page: why isn't this bigger and getting more play?
