Burn a Qu'ran Day.

That proves nothing. The Northern Alliance also you might say vacation there. They are our allies against the Taliban but they are not unconditional allies. They have domestic politics to deal with just as we do. And their political battles are a little more real than ours, ifyadig...and it doesn't help them if morons burn books that their constituency feel attached to. I'm sure you can connect the dots.

Oh sure...I understand that point of view...and quickly reject it, lest we bend over for every other "ally" that might be offended. Do we have to get rid of all the pork and porn too?

Are we going out of our way to offend our allies with pork and porn?

This isn't a case of some foreigners deciding we are decadent, this is a case of someone deciding to offend. It is like an obnoxious asshat trying to pick a fight in a bar....and Petrayus is just plainly saying that offending the political base of our allies will not win the war.

Those who will get pissed off are already pissed off at the US anyway. Since I have some modicum of common sense, if I was a Muslim I'd think "they got hurt real bad on 9/11. I don't blame the yanks one bit. They're still hurting and showing it".

Gee, I thought urinating and toilet flushing of the Qu'ran at 'Gitmo would have pissed them off years ago. Maybe burning will do the trick.

Yes...don't you get satellite TV? Pirate DVD sales in the Mideast? Pulled pork sammys in Baghdad?

It's not suppose to win the war....it's suppose to purposely inflame and innoculate. Why are we only concerned about not offending Muslims?

I agree it will inflame. Inflaming isn't part of the winning strategy. I doubt it will inoculate, no doubt the real purpose is to get more bodies, mouth breathing or otherwise in the pews. I guess the church barker figures that stupidity worked for Phelps.

That's a secondary consideration....the whole world is not going to tip-toe around Islam. Burning objects has a long political tradition in many parts of the world, including Muslim nations.

So you think surrendering to terrorist threats is the way to win in Afghanistan? Why fight at all? Why not just support al Qaeda and the Taliban?

I don't get the General's remarks. I mean, I understand what he's saying; I don't understand why he's saying it. Seems to me the whole purpose of the mission is to fight against the terrorist threat, not give in to it. Seems to me it would undermine the whole purpose for being there.

See, the difference between "the terrorist threat" and normal wars is that if you piss these people off by, oh, burning Qu'rans, you'll end up making more of the people we don't like and are fighting because they're not a set force with relatively stable numbers. It's like fighting fire with gasoline.

But we do fight fire with gasoline...and kerosene...and propane....and butane....and....

.....this is why "The West" will win. Better humour and comic writing.

I sure hope so. Our dinglefritz government(s) seem hell bent on making my country into something out of 1001 Nights...and I don't mean Sinbad. Where's a melting pot when you need one?

:D
