  1. His department at the university have defended him and seem clearly in his corner. Even Amnesty International are vouching for him. If I get more time I may look further into this case. It seems interesting.
  2. I've never seen a university instructor teach a course about his own legal defense, very odd. Interesting case too. More news about this: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/diab-verdict-in-absentia-1.6817944 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_Paris_synagogue_bombing
  3. This is wild... Lebanese-born man allegedly bombs a synagogue in Paris in 1980. A Canadian citizen since 1993, he's extradited by Canada to France in 2014 for trial. In 2018 a French judge drops the charge & Diab is released but 2 days later returns to Canada with help from Canadian officials after being ordered to stay in France during appeals, then in 2023 the highest French appeals court finds him guilty, sentencing him to life in prison & issuing an international warrant. He's now a sociology instructor at Carleton University in Ottawa teaching a course about....himself...called "SOCIAL JUSTICE IN ACTION"., studying "the relationship between abuse of power and miscarriages of justice" and to "Critically examine Canada’s Extradition Law and its shortcomings". Students focus on a case study (himself) and in his course syllabus he points to his own website https://www.justiceforhassandiab.org/ for students to study. The syllabus: https://carleton.ca/socanth/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/202430_SOCI3170A_Hassan-Diab.pdf
  4. There was a young man with long hair, lipstick, and earrings who took my order inside McDonald's a few months ago. I threw my fries at him and ran away. The first sentence was true, the 2nd sentence was a lie.
  5. Police say they don't believe he was acting alone. They seemed to have confirmed he was inspired by ISIS and had the ISIS flag one the back of his truck. Possibly a copycat type thing from the Germany crowd car attack? He probably would have liked to have killed on Xmas day, but everyone's typically inside. New Years is an obvious easier target. He was probably an extremists and the motivation probably had something to do with Gaza. Pro-Palestine protestors were out marching on NYE and boxing day.
  6. The left believes the government should force us to all to pay taxes in order to provide these things through the government. Jesus never said this, as helping was voluntary. He therefore wasn't a communist. Its much easier to give money to the poor when its not your money. I think there's stats or polls showing religious people give more to charity. Jesus believes in the leftwing notion of income and power equality over hierarchy but went about it much differently. So Jesus was a kind of a social justice libertarian and anti-greed, anti-violence. He probably also didn't believe in abortion or sex before marriage or divorce, and who knows about LGBT stuff. So he's kind of half left, half right.
  7. This thread went well
  8. Lived a long life. Seemed like a nice man. Too nice for politics. RIP
  9. I hope we're done with naive idealism for a while. I really dislike the current government's constant pandering and virtue signaling while everyone else is ignored. We need plain talk and realistic hope.
  10. Settled according to who? Do you have polls? Abortion is long settled yes, and I doubt PP touches it (Harper didn't), but they've bungled MAID and society is still working through trans rights. I'd love to see polls of Canadians about modern social issues including "woke" policies. But yes obviously the economy/affordability is the biggest issue, maybe healthcare too. And PP himself isn't that popular according to polls.
  11. 1. There's countless examples in the world happening right now. How long have Jews, Arabs, Christians, and others been fighting over the same areas? Kurds, Shia, and Sunni etc? Why did Pakistan and Bangladesh separate from India after independence? Why are Punjabi's trying to create a Khalistan? Sub-saharan Africa has been filled with civil wars since they became independent countries largely because their borders were drawn by European empires without any regard to local groups, and so they fight for political supremacy within the same governments. People want self-determination and don't want to be dominated. Just ask Quebec. I've studied these issues at the post-secondary level and know what "experts" think on the subject so I'm not ignorant on this. 2. Consider why the people in France speak a different language than Germany, Spain, and Portugal etc. Same with Korea vs China vs Vietnam etc. This is far older than Westphalian sovereignty or the UN. 3. Yes. States are good, and so are provinces. People want self-determination. Quebec and Alberta and the indigenous don't want centralized control over their lives. Children eventually move out of their parents' house for the same reasons. 4. Canada has 3 founding nations, probably more given indigenous people aren't homogenous. They have political differences obviously, and Quebec almost seperated in the 80's and 90's after the Quiet Revolution came to a head. Trudeau Sr tried to unite the country and failed. Francophone K-12 schools in Quebec don't fly the Canadian flag and students don't sing the national anthem, even around Montreal. High risk indeed. Feel free to confirm: The Irish and Germans assimilated. After that, the Italians and others have done ok assimilating but some remain in ethnic enclaves. Those groups don't have many natural differences from each other, besides the Germans and Japanese during WWII. Punjabis and Indians, Muslims and Jews, Tamils vs Sinhalese etc are a different story. We'll see how it goes. What do we all unify around? Americans have it right. 20th century Liberal Party had a similar answer (Canadian flag, national anthem) but didn't teach much history. Trudeau Jr's Liberals not so much (shame, guilt, post-national state, erasing history). 5. "Nation" has a specific definition, not difficult to understand. Quebec is a "nation within a nation" and they dislike outsiders.
  12. You never swore an oath to any British Crown in your entire life. You're a traitor to the Canadian Crown which you pledged allegiance. You're a Russian bot here to sow division. Go screw yourself loser.
  13. The monarchy has no policy making power in Britain. The King is the head of state, not the head of government. The UK are ruled by the people through Parliament. Magna Carta, Glorious Revolution etc. They keep the monarchy around for traditions sake. The Leviathan is now the nation.
  14. Americans are republicans, while loyalists are monarchist, such is why they fled America back to the British Empire. You are nationally schizo. Cognitive dissonance sucks eh?
  15. Organizing people by nation leads to the least internal conflict and instability, including politically. Countless examples through history of that, including in Canada. Besides empires, which are often unsustainable and short-lived, this is the way large society's have almost always organized themselves. America has had some mixed success at a country made up of different ethnicities, but the success has hinged on creating a new nation (Anglo-speaking American) which immigrants from all backgrounds have assimilated into. Canada is running a multicultural post-national experiment with a high risk of failure, Quebec vs Anglos vs Indigenous being examples.
  16. What's the difference between Britain and France and Germany? Between Japan and South Korea? It isn't race. They're all nation-states formed based on distinct cultures.
  17. Schizo American Monarchist YouTube addict.
  18. National atheist.
  19. Answer the poll above. Discussion below.
  20. Anglo? 1980's? Doesn't count LOL
  21. Its possible, but also possible it doesn't happen. There are no guarantees, we'll need to want to make these changes, and right now there is little will for it. If people are lazy and too comfortable then maybe the only way out is forced uncomfortableness via some kind of economic collapse. Canada is well on its way, we're a very unproductive society (according to analysts) with an economy led by oil, banking, and housing real estate, the latter 2 of which are simply leeching off the incomes of hard-working people.
  22. MAGA is a cult and Donald is their leader. Given that you aren't a "Trump supporter" you should realize this. It's very cultish of you to assume that anyone who doesn't suck Donald's testicle is a leftwinger. Yes I am dehumanizing MAGA folks because i'm calling them stupid gullible sheep, and a sheep isn't a human. Baaaaaah.
  23. MAGA is one person, his name is Donald. Everything he says, MAGA shall comply, even when its an obvious lie about people stealing elections from him because his ego can't handle losing. MAGA (Donald Trump) is too stupid too consider the complexities of something like the economic impact of work visas or tarrifs. Don-Don has the attention-span of a 2-year old and certainly won't read anything about those subjects. He prefers TV, which is why his cabinet is filled with people he saw on cable TV.
