  1. I think you're misreading the tenor of the concerns expressed on this topic, which is that many believe officials may be withholding crucial information and that in the vacuum that's been created media outlets are imposing a narrative about mental illness that may or may not be credible. We know that all too often in this country an elite consensus rather than evidence drives public perception, so we've justifiably become cynics.

  2. Look facts. Alcohol & substance abuse far outweigh mental illness in contributing to violence.Strongest predictor of violence is not major mental illness, but past history of violence and criminality.https://t.co/6ITQ1NTZ4d

  3. Surely by now everyone knows Trump didn't write it or anything else. The ghostwriter has been interviewed many times and he says Trump is an idiot and never read a book in the whole time he knew him, much less could write one. He had such a short attention span he couldn't even sit still for interviews so the guy had to kind of just hang around instead. Which makes me wonder why anyone would recommend it. The two possibilities are 1. complete ignorance about the man or 2. trolling.

  4. Here's the summary of the brother - Fahad Hussain.......I think we could say there's a "specter" of criminality with this guy. Here's a snippet but it's worth reading the whole story. Another layer of the onion. Link: https://globalnews.ca/news/4353028/danforth-shooter-older-brother-coma-charges/

  5. Have you noticed, some media are reporting the shooter's brother who is in a coma, suffered a stroke and others report he had a drug overdose. Come on, there's a vast difference in the two conditions. Reporting a stroke raises sympathy from some people for the shooter's family. On the other hand drug overdose raises the specter of a criminal life.

  7. Exactly. It would be helpful to have verification of this illness but police may be working on it. So far there is no evidence he was mentally ill to the point of deadly violence, which is extremely rare for people who are mentally ill, other than the word of a professional activist speaking on behalf of the family. He had a res. In Afghanistan and had been visited by police over going to isis Web sites. his brother was involved with guns etc. He was armed for war,” said a source. “The cost of having that weaponry would be extensive. That kind of stuff does not come cheap.” One officer said in his years on the job, he has never come across a shooter better with a gun than Hussain. “He was very proficient,” said the officer. “I can’t imagine he could change magazines on the run, avoid jamming and hit targets as accurately as he did, had he not had some firearms training and experience.” https://torontosun.com/news/crime/warmington-danforth-shooter-was-armed-for-war-cops-say We are being manipulated by the spin doctors. 8. It seems odd to me that when these attacks happen in Europe, it's "terrorism". But when the exact same kinds of attacks happen in Canada involving the same religion, it's "mental illness." If I'm understanding correctly, an event isn't called terrorism by our government unless the person is a proven active member of ISIS or Al Queda or whatever. Yet, ISIS repeatedly has put out a call for anyone who admires their ideology to conduct attacks in whatever country they are in. To me, whether they are formally affiliated with ISIS or not, if they are carrying out violent attacks on the public in support of Islam - that's terrorism, lone wolf or not.

  9. Betsy - my apologies - I had suggested that it was because he was targeting women. I was mistaken - 8 were male, 8 were female. The information I came across was related to the Yonge street carnage - which was targeted at women. So it does seem that Mr. Singh's "speculation" was likely correct.

  10. Thanks for repeating what I said. I have since confirmed that in fact 16 people were shot - 8 were male, 8 were female. Link: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/toronto/article-one-dead-13-injured-gunman-killed-in-toronto-mass-shooting/

  11. Meanwhile Europe wins, Trump claiming he will back off on the metal tariffs too. Canada now waiting on the sidelines. empty handed. Your suggestion of knee-jerk leftist emotional reaction leads to bull-shit.

  12. It's not about you or me....being a vassal state of America has a political and economic price that some Canadians are not willing to pay...especially when Trump rubs their noses in it. Such Canadian disdain is not new, but Trump has made it more difficult to be the happy mouse in a relationship with a "rogue" elephant. In the end, I think Canada fears life more without America than the current status quo. Canada has no Plan B.

  14. EU came with hats in hand and begged Trump's forgiveness. Trump holds all the trump cards, and he knows it. Just signed a new trade deal with the EU. Meanwhile Canada is still in limboland. Will somebody please wake up sissy boy Trudope and tell him to get to work for Canada? And I mean get to work on a trade deal for Canada - not that Trump's daughter needs ballerina lessons from the drama teacher.

  17. We all know what it was - it was a terrorist attack. We know it, the police know it, Trudeau knows it and Dailamah knows it. They don't want the truth, they want plausible deniability, and "mental illness" gives them that. I suppose mental illness has an effect in so much as any terrorist is mentally ill, but that's not gonna be enough, it will be sold as "mental illness and too many guns, Islam...no way"! 18. https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/fatah-mentally-ill-the-media-or-the-murderer?video_autoplay=true We should all be troubled that the state broadcaster has inserted itself into this specific case. The CBC has turned into a propaganda machine. It was the CBC that aimed the spotlight on the mental illness issue and gun crime to divert from the aspect of a potential Muslim hate crime against average Canadians.

  19. I think we should perhaps modify the oath of allegiance to simply promising to obey the law. It shouldn't be imposing any king of belief system on a person otherwise it just encourages untruthfulness anyway.

  20. There is no comparison to be made here. I respect the right of people to kill themselves. I don't believe, however, that they have any moral or practical right to kill others. I also suspect that it's very common for people who have another serious illness to suffer depression and/or other mental illness. Some kinds of cancer, for instance, can generate mental changes as a result of a condition called paraneoplastic syndrome. Few kills others, whether or not they display overt symptoms of mental illness. I believe Robin Williams was suffering a serious and degenerative physical/brain illness (Parkinson's) prior to his death. In such cases, suicide can be a rational choice. But in my opinion to compare such a situation to the case of a mass shooter and/or killer is repugnant. You should be ashamed of yourself for even alluding that such an analogy might apply.

  25. This is something that should have happened a long time ago. If it forces Canada to do so, then Trump has been a great motivator. Stop being so dependent on the U.S. market/economy.

  26. We may be able to come up with a better system, but there is merit to a system that provides a counterbalance to the the tyranny of the majority. I don't see how a republic would manage that when the same people vote for both the legislative and the executive branch.

  27. I'm a foreigner. But I believe in America. In many ways, Americans are carrying the heavy weight of being American. As a Canadian, I enjoy all the privileges of being American without having to pay the cost of being American.

  28. I think we have to stop referring to them as "refugees" or "asylum-seekers". They have already received asylum in a safe third country, which is the United States. Therefore none of them have any right to be in Canada. Coming over the border illegally makes them all criminals. They are "illegal immigrants" or "illegal aliens" or just "illegals". They should all be rounded up and deported.

Canada has never been an enemy, more like a little brother full of idealism and dreams because big brother scares away all the other potential bully in the yard. Big bro just need you to hurry up and sign the new deal that will help both of us work better with one another.

  31. I think this is accomodation, not discrimination. It would be discrimination if the Muslim women did not allow other non-Muslim women to swim at the same time. Some gyms have women-only times, too.
