Victoria, BC: Victoria city council has voted unanimously to cancel 'Canada Day'. They are spineless.2 points

They are, as she says, a bunch of floundering amateurs with no idea what they're doing. They've attacked and hamstrung natural resources because they disapprove of them while doing little or nothing to improve or expand our economy elsewhere. Our PM has no experience or training in economics, finance or law. Neither has our finance minister, whose degree is in Russian literature. Our health minister was a director of a homeless shelter and has no medical training. The minister of national revenue was a social worker. Our agriculture minister worked in tourism. The minister of economic development is a lawyer. Same goes for the minister of innovation, science and industry. The minister of Natural Resources has a degree in philosophy and no experience in natural resources. The Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade has a degree in political science and worked all her life in the public sector, mainly in education. The minister of labour has no experience with labour, but worked as a chaplain. The minister of fisheries and oceans has no experience with fisheries or industry. Her education is in poli scie and she worked with health care foundations. Minister of Middle Class Prosperity and Associate Minister of Finance also has no education or experience in finances or economics. And we expect these people to come out with good economic policy? Or even understand and be able to judge what is or isn't good economic policy?2 points

You’re so wrong. Canada was absolutely founded on enlightenment values, many of them derived from Britain which banned slavery in the Empire in 1832, long before it was banned in the U.S. Read about the Underground Railroad. MacDonald was not a white supremacist. He was a Scott who was representing the overwhelming majority of his population who were of European ancestry. Many Indigenous would very much have appeared “uncivilized” in relation to mainstream society. Your comments are irresponsible and untrue. Learn about Joseph Brant and Tecumseh. Read about the countless progressive changes to laws and policies that unfolded in the British parliament and later the Canadian parliament. You really don’t know how Indigenous were treated or why publicly funded education was considered progressive and still is today. Provide evidence for “horrendous and appalling” system-wide treatment in residential schools. This is why people are clinging to extreme sides. No reasonable discussion based on facts.2 points

Texas is going to build its own border wall. It's about time somebody like a state Governor thought of that. https://citizenfreepress.com/breaking/greg-abbott-texas-will-build-its-own-border-wall/1 point

Yes, now we're on the right track.... "Investors" ... Chinese nationals who can't bring money back onshore and need to keep it here to make more money. Actually sounds like a dream for Canada in attracting investing. So how do Canadians feel about foreign nationals buying up land ? Well, people I know who bought in the 20th century are sure glad to have their homes worth many times what they paid for them and more than a few boomers are getting their assets bailed out by now having a path to retirement, ie. sell the split-level bungalow in Willowdale and buy an estate in Pembroke, then live off the difference. But what about the "dirty" element ? Wealthy Chinese are one thing but what about dark money ? One Yonge St. East is one of the tallest buildings downtown, and the project was being run by the Kazakh Bank, and Michael Gold a Kazakh-born Canadian. It got into trouble and was bought by Pinnacle Group, which this page says is run by organized criminals. https://www.gangsterismout.com/2016/06/hells-angel-damiano-dipopolo-and-de.html I don't know, but my guess is that governments are turning their gaze elsewhere when it comes to assets bought with cash and laundered money. I would say the real problem is, therefore perhaps, not immigration but greed. Regardless - governments want money and that won't be changing. Investors are out there with cash in hand to turn empty lots into lucrative assets that employ thousands are unsurprisingly not turned away. And since we aren't exporting manufactured goods (from about 30% in 1944 down to 10% in 2017) then maybe we need this.1 point

Some immigrants are doing well, mainly the principle applicants. Some family class come over with savings. But the main issue is that when you bring in hundreds of thousands of people each year you need housing and we're not building it fast enough due to restrictive municipal and provincial zoning laws, regulations, bureaucracy, etc. I saw a study once that said a developer needs ten years to get through the process once they buy land before they can build a housing project on it.1 point

Come on. Are you serious right now. Buying real estate in Canada is the way to go for Chinese aristocracy to leave their land.1 point

1. I'm thinking maybe you are new to this topic. Do you have something stating *specifically* that worker/family ratios have changed ? You realize that workers tend to come here with their families, who they are expected to support ? "health care system stretched to the brink" sounds like just a saying that people say all the time, not a specific situation that we are dealing with. In any case, the healthcare system is designed to grow in capacity as population grows. The people coming over will be lower in age and therefore their taxes will likely pay for the healthcare of older Canadians. It will not, however, cover CPP gaps. There are too many old people drawing CPP to make a dent in that, as I understand. 2. Well, possibly, but they have to convince them to vote Liberal first. Mainstreet Polling found that Muslims overwhelmingly supported Doug Ford in the 2018 election in Ontario so it would seem that counting on ethnic votes would be a stupid and maybe even racist idea. I mean, they know that they get to choose who to vote for and they are informed so...1 point

"""The ravages of the pandemic have resulted in prudence elsewhere. The U.S. reduced its visa approvals a year ago, Australia lowered its immigration target to 160,000 (with 28 million people compared to Canada’s 37.7 million), and New Zealand said its priority was to train people already in the country for available jobs. By contrast, Mendicino announced that of the 400,000 allowed in per year, the breakdown would be 232,000 immigrants in the economic class, or employable people; 103,500 in the family class (mostly parents and grandparents); and 65,000 refugees and protected persons. Such levels are unjustifiable by many measures. Canada’s unemployment rate is high, at 8.1 per cent, compared to 6.1 per cent in the U.S, and 5.6 per cent in Australia. Canada’s economic recovery is more fragile and will take longer, according to forecasts by the International Monetary Fund. The U.S. is vaccinating its way back quickly to an estimated 6.4 per cent growth in 2021 and Canada is forecast for 5 per cent growth this year, but that’s impossible given the lockdowns and border closings due to Ottawa’s ongoing vaccine procurement failure." - Diane Francis, NP Notice a little over half of these immigrants will be employables. Meaning Canadian taxpayers will be expect to support the other 170,000 immigrants added per year or nearly half a million over 3 years. Considering our debt is approaching 400 billion and our health care system is stressed to the brink, this doesn't make sense. It obvious why Liberals are bent on bringing in 1.2 million immigrants in the next three years. It's all about future liberal votes. 103,500 will be family class and 65,000 refugees. These people will have to be largely supported by the government (taxpayers) at a time when we are approaching 400 billion in debt. Not a good plan. Our allies are certainly not going down that path. They have far more sense than the amateurs we have running things.1 point

funny because it's true the attempt to erase British & French Canada to replace it with the Liberal Party of Canada has resulted in no Canada at all1 point

Her argument is terrible: "To analyze the benefits of immigration, it’s important to look at the GDP per capita figures. This metric makes it obvious that Canadian immigration has served mostly to cut the pie into smaller pieces for everybody: Canada’s GDP ranks ninth in size, but its GDP per capita is only 18th, less than the U.S. GDP per capita at fifth place, or Australia’s at 9th place." She doesn't explain how immigration purportedly changes this ratio or tried to explain how. Furthermore, GDP per capita doesn't show distribution or wealth disparity. The GINI index is often used to measure that, and Canada's index is pretty constant. https://tradingeconomics.com/canada/gini-index-wb-data.html This board used to host good discussion on economic topics, and now it hosts Trudeau haters who drool about Canada being Communist, and quote political columns as evidence.1 point

Being "leftist" and all, I think I should point out that I agree - "cancelling" Canada day is the wrong thing to do. Are they going to actually cancel the day - as in, no stat holiday and not allowing anyone to have any kind of Canada Day related celebration? Or are they cancelling city-sponsored celebrations, and everyone else can do what they want? If its the latter, is it just for this year or permanently? If they're cancelling city-sponsored events for this year only, I kind of get that as a gesture. If this gesture is followed up by something substantial (no idea what a municipality might do), then ok. But if it's just a gesture - good for a news cycle and then they forget about it, then I think its nothing more than virtue signaling.1 point

1. I don't really put much weight into what the government puts out, not because it is the liberals because all sides are guilty of doing it. Words are cheap, it's the action part we need more of. 2. My point is our nation has been engaged on the war on terror for almost 20 years now, and unfortunately most people equate terrorism as a Islamic or Muslim practice, and while i can't speak for everyone, I know not every Muslim is a terrorist or my enemy, it is going to take a long time to change how i think. I also want to make it clear, although i may be guarded when it comes to Muslims in general, I'm not that guy that looks or wants to do them harm. I also get that most are coming from a war torn or major conflict area, and are more than likely to be suffering from PTSD as well, in one way i can relate to what they must be going through, other than that in my opinion i have nothing in common our cultures are vastly different, and perhaps it is because i only see the worst parts of the middle east in their worst moments but what i seen was beyond comprehension, to the point it was evil at its worse. And it was far to common not to judge everyone that lived in that country. 3. It is my experience that not many people will stand up to such behavior, most ignore the entire thing like it is not happening, kudos to you. 4. I think everyone is capable of doing some very nasty things, in situations that we consider abnormal, it would not take much in a lot of people, to go from good law abiding people to criminal even here in the west, we are held back by some very fragile laws, and without police or someone enforcing those few laws, we would be no better than any other 3 world nation, just look at the states during hurricane Katrina, or Ice storm in Quebec and Ontario, where the strong feed on the weak, and take what they want. 5. Not that i see both of us agreeing on most topics, i would not want you to change any of that, NEVER be disappointed in yourself for holding or standing up for what you perceive as your moral values, Your holding your own in what is mostly a conservative forum, not many people would or could do that. My father used to say it takes all kinds of people to make a village, we are all different don't change lanes to fit in , because it gets tough.1 point

Ok. This is just a a couple of times: There's plenty of examples like that, usually accompanied by posts detailing atrocities extremists have indulged in. Are you going to try another lie, here, or just admit you've been busted?1 point

The Canadian voter is lazy and self-serving. Unable to comprehend the meaning of compromise, and unable to see the long term effects that voting in an inept fool will have on the future. Yes, Trudeau is the perfect leader for stupid Canadians. They deserve each other.1 point

No assumes that's always the case. We know about math, probabilities, and real life. One thing that you and most leftists are blissfully ignorant about is the fact that the hijab symbolizes more than just forcing an unwanted fashion statement on a woman. It is a huge symbol of religious bigotry and oppression around the world and there's not even a close second. In the Southern US racist trogs still cruise around with their confederate flag, acting like it's not a symbol of racism or hate, and the hijab is the exact same thing. Just like some people are triggered by throwbacks to racism and slavery, a lot of women who escaped appalling religious bigotry in the ME are upset by the hijab as well. There are many, many countries in the world where not wearing a hijab is guaranteed to get a woman verbally harrased, threatened, assaulted, and even raped, and in a lot of places the police won't even give a shit. Systemic genocidal rapes have even been carried out, using the hijab to differentiate targets from untouchables. How cool is it to carry a confederate flag? How cool is it to wear a hijab? I'm not some angry fool who's going to be rude to say something to a person for choosing to wear something on their head, and I'm not enough of a snowflake to pretend to be offended myself, but if we're being honest here, seeing as leftists are always having a huge conversation about how offensive certain symbols are, why does the hijab get left out? It is no better than a confederate flag. Only wearing a swastika is actually worse. I get that this is your elevator speech, and you'll ignore reason and facts like the plague, but I'll indulge you for whatever reason. Of course, out of a billion+ muslims, there are hundreds of thousands of truly amazing and decent people. It's the nature of some people to be that way. But if you look at the REAL WORLD, oppressive religious bigotry exists in entire muslim countries at a level that you will only find in extremely small fringe groups in other areas. How do you explain that away dialamah? Are there really no conclusions that can be drawn from that? Can you explain to me how people of the islamic faith feel about Pakistan and Israel? Two countries formed at the exact same time in the exact same way, along religious lines? Which one of those countries do you feel is more 'progressive'? You're talking about entire countries with blatant, government-enforced bigotry... Hmmmm.1 point

An advanced democratic society must be able to discuss the issues like religiously motivated attire in public places and specifically, education system in an intelligent and civilized manner for the benefit of the entire society. Pretending that there's one default true answer, and especially claiming the privilege of always and by default having the right answer does not offer any solutions. It only demonstrate absence of understanding and ability to discuss serious matters as grown up citizens in a civilized and intelligent manner.1 point

I think most of the problems we’re having now result from a lack of trust due to lack of community connection. Each side of a debate, right or left, Québécois nationalist or federalist, takes an extreme position and tries to lock it in because few people believe in compromise or reasonable consensus. When people feel powerless and alienated from the political process they either disengage from it altogether or disrespect the process entirely. We end up with racist attitudes or ridiculous attacks on Canadian institutions without recognizing that a healthy democracy requires open debate and compromise. Strange that on the one hand we have some Indigenous and Muslims, for example, who feel mistreated and marginalized at the same time as we hear Quebecers or multi-generational Canadians saying that they don’t recognize the country they grew up in and that they feel disrespected and disenfranchised. I think this happens when any one side is allowed free reign to tell everyone what to think. The toppling of statues of Canada’s founders is unhelpful for this reason. It shows no perspective and fails to see the good in these people, as there most certainly was in figures like Ryerson. People feel that their opinions don’t matter because the loudest, brashest voice is allowed to dominate and tell everyone else how it is. Robert Putnam talked about how when people stop getting together and building relationships, social currency is lost. We just went through a pandemic where everyone retreated to their immediate families, and most people probably clung to people who looked and sounded as they do in their extended families and ethnic communities. That’s not how to build social cohesion. The pandemic restrictions have been unhealthy for many reasons. The level of distrust in a country with a typically high level of social harmony relative to other countries is concerning.1 point

Why can there never even be a slight slowing or pause in immigration? Even during recessions or pandemics? It’s like a religion to you people. You people have completely priced modt of the middle class from buying a home because of your insanity. But you people don’t ever give a shit. It’s maximum immigration, consequences be damned.1 point

How ridiculous that Canada is keeping the border closed when more Yanks are fully vaccinated than Canadians. Open the damn border and trash the creepy fascist idea of vaccine passports. Get these clowns out of Ottawa. https://apple.news/AC4wEPUoTTFSTesc3xxdEMQ1 point
