It's no wonder Unifor's Dias is so worked up over the closure of the GM Oshawa operation. A loss of upwards of 3 million dollars in union dues annually is staring him in the face.2 points

True.....the Unifor crybabies are already talking about retooling the plant with yet another foreign owner...no consideration at all for a domestically owned product. It must be a permanent mindset....build foreign cars for export to other nations.2 points

You seem to think that talking about things like "eradicating Israel" and "wiping out Israel" and the fact that "Israel was wiped out" before is ok if you just fall a bit short of actually promoting genocide. It's not as cute as you think. It's actually a really sick little dance that you are doing. You have no clue how evil those events actually were. mohammed himself presided over the beheadings of approximately 800 Jews (the Banu Qurayza - google it) when they refused to convert to islam. Their wives and children were forced into rape-slavery. They have done this to over 100 million people in the 1,400 years since, and they still did things mohammed's way in this decade, in Syria. That is the method by which Israel was wiped from the map. What you are accusing Israel of is a total joke by comparison and it's really pathetic that you would talk about muslim-style eradication.2 points

Maybe they could ask GM for our money back. LOL. The situation should send a very important message to voters. The Libs are much more sympathetic to corporate shareholders than they are to ordinary workers or taxpayers. Anybody who thought or thinks otherwise is deluded. The Lib government will sell us down the river without asking any questions in the process. Disgraceful, really. But also, sadly, predicable.2 points

Sorry, but this would only be another emotional response with little impact...same as boycotting Heinz ketchup. Scream and shout in anger as needed, but it is better to get through the five steps of grief as soon as possible and move on....this is not the first plant closure in Canada. The underlying fundamentals of high labour costs, high energy costs, and taxes caused the loss of far more automotive jobs and plant closures long before today's GM announcement. Ontario has been bleeding away automotive jobs for at least 20 years.2 points

I'm not blaming the workers, I'm blaming the governments for the regulatory burden and the tax burden.1 point

Really good article on subsidies - laid out in simple terms. If you understood the underlying purpose of subsidies around the world, you might look at them differently. Put your Green blinders aside and think of subsidies around the world through the eyes of The People - especially poor people in poor countries. As with just about everything - there are three sides to every story. Link: https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Is-Canadian-Oil-Actually-Subsidized.html1 point

....and be mindful of the fact that the bean counters at GM (and other manufacturers) are already spooked by high energy and labour costs in Ontariario. This plant closing dance has been going on for years....yet they still are acting like it was a bolt out of the sky.1 point

It's time to explore our advantages. Raising carbon taxes will logically reduce motor-vehicle production. How could the government not have anticipated this? That being said, what are our advantages? If the carbon tax were revenue neutral, then we could argue that while the automotive industry might experience decline, other less fuel-dependent industries could benefit from the tax reduction to compensate. Unfortunately, the carbon tax was not revenue neutral, but an overall tax increase. In other words, we made it harder for the auto industry to grow without making it easier for other industries to take its place.1 point

You do realize that's the only reason he comes here, right? To taunt Canadians and make them mad. Explore the utility of your ignore file. It was made for trolls.1 point

I hope Ontario enjoys more tanking automotive employment because of high labour costs, high energy costs, taxes, and regulation. https://lop.parl.ca/sites/PublicWebsite/default/en_CA/ResearchPublications/201553E1 point

It's also worth remembering that in March the Liberals quietly forgave all outstanding loans to GM and Chrysler, likely worth billions of dollars.1 point

This is less about the Ontario's competitiveness and more about the Big 3's competitiveness. There are non-Union Honda and Toyota assembly plans in Ontario doing very well. It's a larger discussion about why the Big 3 are getting their lunch fed to them by Korean and Japanese automakers when it comes to compact and mid-sized cars. Ford has moved away from almost completely (They'll still make the Mustang)1 point

Actions have consequences. When you make the cost of doing business more and more expensive like the previous provincial government did, as well as the current federal government with their energy policies, things like this happen.1 point

Don't you get it ? GM is more Chinese than it is Canadian. You are living in the past....Durant and McLaughlin have been dead for many years. The old GM died in 2009....went bankrupt....needed government bailouts. Stop throwing good money after bad. It will always be win-lose in the end. Trump doesn't owe Canada a damn thing. All of the America haters in Canada will just have one more thing to bitch about.1 point

Of course....Michigan and Ohio too...so what ? My area lost a 90 year old Ford truck assembly plant some years ago....it is being redeveloped into a light industrial park. GM has shed 30,000+ jobs in Ontario before this, but now it is serious because the last 2500 in Oshawa are going too ? Where was the big bad boycott back then ? Still waiting for a Canadian owned car make to build an assembly plant in the USA.1 point

Dream on. GM is restructuring and the cost of doing business in Canada/Ontario is too high. No number of boycotts will change their plans. Expect more GM plants to close.1 point

This is strictly about people being assholes. We should simply have two signs in Canada to deal with this, one that reads 'Don't be an asshole' for new arrivals and one the reads, 'See you later asshole' for assholes we kick out.1 point

At this point we need reasonable accommodation legislation enshrined in federal law. Canada was formed out of common law, Judeo-Christian values, French and English languages and traditions, separation of church and state, and indigenous treaties. We need to stop watering these cultural traits down to make the country more palatable to forces that are antithetical to Canadian values and traditions. This has nothing to do with racism or xenophobia. This is about protecting a country’s culture. There’s nothing wrong with that, no apologies to be made. People can take it or leave it and choose not to immigrate if they don’t want what Canada has to offer, which is a lot. This should happen soon to prevent Sharia law on the weak-kneed extreme left or racist fascism on the extreme alt right.1 point

Oh - but they're not that bad - you're only getting the shrill voices - the hard edges. Everything will be fine - just trust us. That's the "progressive" mindset. Give yourself a good shake if you believe that kind of nonsense. As much as they hate the Jews today - do not doubr=t that they will come for everyone else tomorrow. The Koran is what guides them - and Allah is the one - the only true God. As many Muslims have said - if it takes a hundred - or a thousand years - Islam will prevail. Those that ignore it, do so at OUR own peril. Out with Trudeau ASAP.1 point

And let's expand on this for a bit. Nazis LOVED elections. A great chance to lay a physical beating on their opponents while intimidating voters in the process. However...elections were a means to power...only. No more elections once the Third Reich was underway. Zero. You don't vote Der Fuhrer out...you can only vote him in. Islam behaves similarly. It will use Democracy as a means to an end but will eliminate elections in favor of religious theocracy once it gains power. Watch...1 point
