@Moonlight Graham - did you get a chance to read the article @herbie cited?

And how much did Biden spend on the Ukraine war?  Which happened under his watch.

Trump could be Mother Teresa and also cure cancer and leftwingers wouldn't acknowledge it.  And I don't even like Trump.

Well proponents would argue that the property tax will be going to maintain the roads leading to your property, the sewer lines running to your property, The emergency services that protect your property etc etc.

Or a property tax will keep out the riff-raff.

Property taxes are the least worst taxes I pay. I can see where they are going and I can at least bend the Mayor’s ear if I don’t like where they are going.

The best property tax in Canada is the cold weather.

No you deflectors try to. I've repeatedly posted and ppl like you refuse to return to it.
Get out of the shitpile and join the actual discussion or get out. A couple sidetracks are no problem but hijacking every single f*cking thread into nothing bur the same tiny shitpile of issues is something mods are supposed to react to. It's become the Godwins Law 2025

I agree property taxes are necessary. Yet they are not applied uniformly.

Where we live the more desirable areas have higher property taxes than less desirable area's and receive the exact same services.

I don’t mind that I pay more than most for this tax. On my cul-de-sac we get the same snow clearing as roads of similar length with many times the number of households.

In Ireland they abolished a similar rates system fifty years ago and have been regretting it ever since. Keep politics as local as possible.

Agreed. That's something people should agree on left or right,  the bigger the gov't the less we should be giving them power and money. Keeping it close to home helps keep it more accountable and more in tune with the actual taxpayer.

This sounds like speculation. I don't see any real sign he's in their pockets, at least not nearly like the other politicians.  He's certainly not starting wars like the establishment GOP and Democrats do.

Canada also wants to buy as much defense equipment from non-US allies as they can given the trade war with Trump.

The Big Beautiful Bill includes an additional $150 billion in defence spending.

For the us that's not even a cost of living increase in defense spending.

A big deal.

In Canada, in some provinces, we cannot reduce our federal taxes with other taxes.

More important, Trump changed this.

Do like they did here. Send a separate tax notice for water, sewer and garbage collection and call them "fees" that you can increase like 10-15% every year.
While you're at it get the Province to build a massive new hospital and senior's home, and then lower the senior's discount from 50% down to 25, so they see no real savings and then have a secret in camera meet to drop it altogether once you do.
Retired people can afford to pay the same as the guy that owns the sawmill.

It does seem kind of weird that you can “buy” your house, pay tens of thousands of dollars of tax on that, and then essentially still rent it from the government for several thousand dollars a year.  And if you don’t pay it, they can take the house that you supposedly ”own”.

Your lack of knowledge about about, well, everything is breathtaking.

You pay thousands in "fees" like Title transfers etc. You're supposed to believe that's different from a tax.

You pay property tax tho, so even tho it's not federal there's definitely a tax involved.

Duh! That's what the thread is about. You pay those for the services delivered to your property, not when you buy it. And like any other service you pay it over and over.
When you buy a property part way thru the assessment period, you don't pay that tax, you have to pay back the seller for what he already paid while you own it.

Rather confused here, guys.

=====

I buy a property. OK. Call this number paid $X.

I also agree to pay for regular monthly services, property taxes. Call this number $Y.

X can be zero, or Y can be zero. I'm confused.
