There's nothing current in books, so there's very little to be learned about current events like the war in Ukraine by reading books, but being a reader expands your attention span and helps increase your reading comprehension so that you're not as easily tricked by media disinformation campaigns. 

Look at Snopes for a perfect example of how to use misleading headlines, in their case it's to back up MSM disinformation...

They'll frame a question with two parts like: "Thing A because of Thing B" and then rate it false because of Thing B, when all people really care about is Thing A.

To a person with a short attention span, who thinks nuance means your mom's younger sisters, the above paragraph means that "Thing A is 100% false", full stop, and that's the answer that Snopes readers are looking for, so they're done, and nothing will change their minds.  

Long story short, there's no excuse for anyone who reads books to be a leftist.
