We already know judge Merchan is going to impose the maximum possible sentence whatever that may be. But looking to the future, where do the Democrats go from here? Is this now the play book to be used against all Republican presidential challengers from this day on?

The maximum is four years on each count. That isn't going to happen. I doubt he will get jail time.m

That is the most likely case. Moving forward democrats will without a doubt be screamingly aggressive digging dirt on any potential candidate and looking for any opportunity to bring them to trial.

Max sentence is concurrent service, so max 4 years for all.

Well this was their big kick at the can, basically this was all the ammo they had for the next election. So we'll have to see if it moves the dial or not in the next few weeks as the polling takes place

They scheduled sentencing for two days before the Republican convention. They are looking to jail him. It's what they do in a banana republic

Trials, like this one, are always run by judges and decided by juries. 

My statement was to contrast the reluctance of Republicans to  prosecute Republicans. See Ailene Cannot in FL who is slow rolling Trump's trial there.

Sure. I mean they're going all out, they are going to put in a 100% effort to discredit him and try and use this trick as a political tool. I don't think there's ever been any real doubt about that.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I'm fairly confident that the judge will order jail time and then trump will appeal and will be let out subject to his appeal hearings. In their perfect world he would be in jail for the debate and they would have to reschedule as a result and they could make tons of hay with that.

Healing the country would be ridding the judiciary of judges who have no problem running over peoples constitutional rights and restoring a fair and equitable judicial system. That's what Mandela stood for

Roughly 9 of 10 people voted Democrat in this particular district. That's probably why they chose to bring the charges there

The democrats know that in the end he'll probably get off on these charges. But right now he's out money and he's out time and now they can say that he's a convicted criminal running for office. They can make the whole debate about whether or not trump will be serving from jail if he is elected and completely deflect from biden and his horrible record.

And that's not really okay. This is the kind of thing that first world countries try and avoid. It was a very specific reason why they brought the charges now and out earlier and not later. They are weaponizing the courts to try and take out political opponents.
