Disagree.

Mulroney was no Great Statesman on the international stage.

But on the domestic stage, he was fundamental. He changed Canada.

1. He was the first federal Conservative leader that people in French Canada could understand.

2. He was the second Catholic Conservative federal leader after Thompson.

2a. He was the second Conservative federal leader from Quebec after Abbott.

2b. He defeated Clark.

3. He fixed our our old manufacturing sales tax. He negotiated free trade.

1. nobody cares about French Canada, disloyal Fenian bastards

2 Free Trade was all part of his downfall, since it was extremely unpopular at the time

3 Clark would have lasted longer, just by caving into the NDP on everything

4 Roman Catholicism is the Whore of Babylon, leading us the collectivist lunatic asylum of the Post National State

It was the right decision for the country.

Result we have the Conservative party today, initiated and run by a buncha western bible thumping preacher-men.

As Joe Clark said at the time, "They dropped the 'progressive' part".

That and the BQ gobbling all their support in Quebec.

Mulroney was a soft on Communism lefty progressive

I was waiting to see how long some contemporary fascist claiming to a conservative would take to call him out as a woke leftist.
Yeah he managed not to adopt every crazy 18th century ass backwards social conservative policy on the planet.

- like his leadership role on S Africa
- taking the first steps in recognizing the rights of gays
- pushing sex education during the AIDs era (rather than denial. blame and disinformation)
- improved maternity leave, made it more tax deductible

At the same time brought in Free Trade that got us out of a 100 yr old branch plant economic colony.
Brought in the GST which was needed, originally to begin moving taxation away from income and onto spending - your disposable income ( an idea today's so called conservatives forgot)

Aside from the incessant scandals and appeasement to Quebec, I still gag at those shots of him singing Irish Eyes with Reagan. And still gets accused of not being Reagan's best ally after Thatcher. F that noise.

He was the last Tory I ever voted for in 1984.

His first election was the first i scrutineered for.

He did better than most. He was far from perfect, but he did run structural surpluses for most of his time in office. Of course with the debt and inflation left by trudeau that still meant deficit spending to pay the interest but he left a pretty tight ship.

The free trade agreement increased our trade surplus with the US tenfold, and that made a HUGE difference for us.

And the GST proved to be a massive game changer as well.

Of course the liberals campaigned against both but kept them.

It's a shame he got himself a little dirty at the end with airbus and the cash for services thing but lets face it - you coudln't get elected in the east if you weren't a little corrupt, ontario doesn't vote for honest people much :)

And it's a shame he allowed the tradition of completely ignoring the west to continue  - that would lead to the  death of the PC party of course

But all in all he was at least a C+ or B as far as prime ministers go and he did a lot of things that he believed was right for canada even though it hurt him politically, and you absolutely have to admire that trait in a leader

No big loss for Canada. For a conservative, i was surprised when he gave us all the GST. That was not a very nice conservative thing to have done at all. Bulroney was just like the rest. He believed in more government, more taxes and less freedom. He didn't help make Canada great. He made it even worse. But what can one expect from a liberal wearing conservative clothing. Stop praising a guy who really did nothing for Canada. 👎 Just my opinion.

Now you're arguing I was being honest? Bwahahaha!

No, nobody would ever argue that :)

So just to double check - are you saying you were confused about your lying or lying about being confused?

Although with you two things can be true ;)

He also did the acid rain deal - which makes him about the only prime minister who actually passed a climate bill and hit the target :)

True.

Mulroney brought Elizabeth May into government.

Yep.  He wasn't perfect but he got a hell of a lot done, including things he knew would be bad for him but good for canada.

In 1976, Stanfield resigned. There was a federal Conservative leadership.

Joe who? Clark (Catholic, from Alberta, lousy French) won. Wagner (from Quebec) lost. Mulroney (Catholic) came third.

Note: Federal Conservatives chose Clark a third candidate someone outside Quebec.

(People folded Mulroney's name so that it was "Money".)

===

In 1979, Clark became PM, in a minority government.

He bungled everything in Feb 1980 and the rest, as they say, is a walk in the snow.
