The article says she is the wrong person to solve or deal with all the problems that people are concerned about today, such as random attacks, crime, homelessness, drug deaths, and tent cities.

Hilarious that Ford gave "strong mayor" powers to Toronto thinking it would be John Tory forever and now has handed a golden sceptre to a hard left socialist.  Great strategizing there, Doug.

It's a sign of instability that Toronto will now turn to a true socialist for help, but with working people getting beat up as they have been it was only a matter of time before they considered this.

A worrying trend in Canada increasingly third world population to hope that all-powerful governments would or could solve all problems. The awakening is usually hard and painful (and the later, the harder). None of the actual problems has been solved in decades and the new ones piling up at accelerating rate. When should you be concerned?

Bike lanes that ruin traffic flow throughout the city.

$6.70 to take a crowded bus or train downtown to the offices and back.

Underfunded essential services.

Regular gun fights and knifings in the streets and public transit.

Property taxes that are silly.

And now Torontonians want to elect a socialist as mayor? LOL...what a dump.

Unlike her late husband she's really not a good leader or good at the job. Toronto will sink a little further during her time. But it's literally what they asked for unless they come to their senses pretty quick

Well pretty red tory one might say   And toronto is demonstrably not naturally conservative at all. Federally for example the conservatives have struggled inside toronto itself.

But, hopefully you're right and they'll give her a pass despite the polling. Her husband was an amazing politician but she is not.

Jack was a good man.  I’d like to believe in Olivia too, but I don’t see the acumen or same level of sincerity. Maybe I’m wrong.

It's not her first foray into poltiics, we do have a track record to look at and it's not great.

I may not have agreed with Jack's politics but the man got things done, AND he was willing to get in there and live as he preached. But Chow just doesn't have what it takes. she has the connections to get elected but not the skills to do the job.

People seem to mistake comments I make as advocating.  Just because Doug Ford made a bad move doesn't mean that I like that.

Hopefully right away, because Toronto has some of the lowest property tax rates in the country and constantly relies on handouts and subsidies from the provincial and federal governments.

If Toronto didn’t have lower property taxes, the Toronto homeowners with modest incomes wouldn’t be able to keep their homes.  The tax mill rate applied to a million dollar home, which is the low average home cost in Toronto, would bury residents who grew up in Toronto. You don’t even know how to be a leftist.

Well not really.  The residential rate is fairly middle of the road - no where near the lowest but not the highest. But - when you then look at MULTI residential and corporate, it's a different story

 

Those rates for commerical and multi res are fairly high - very high for the commercial.

So no, the property taxes are no where near 'low'. For residential they're middle of the road (vancouver is half that) and for commercial it's already high.

Jacking property taxes would be a mistake.
