In the midst of reports that school closures and public lockdowns could go on many months before a vaccine is developed, causing severe economic damage, some are wondering if we should return to work and treat the illness as it emerges, if those treatments have a good success rate.  I think extreme measures are right in the short-term for slowing the spread, but at a certain point, if we can make enough decent treatments available, accepting the risk and carrying on with social distancing may be the better alternative to waiting for a vaccine.  The ideal would be to eliminate any further spread, but maybe that’s not realistic.

Several therapies have been thrust into the spotlight in recent days for their promise: Gilead's remdesivir, Regeneron's kevzara and generic antimalarial drug chloroquine (and an alternative version called hydroxychloroquine).”

Bang on.

Lots of people will die from the coronavirus if we all go back to work if there's no reliable treatment, but once it is known to be treatable that drastically reduces the threat of deaths from the virus.

Now we have to balance out how many people will die from the stress of losing their homes vs how many will die from the virus if we go back to work.

Homelessness and stress actually will kill a lot of people. The longer we all stay away from work, the slower the overall economic recovery will be. If we miss one paycheck, people will be back to renovating our houses and going to restaurants & bars after a month or two, and all the people in the trades and the service industry will be back at work. If we all miss three months of work it will be a long time before the whole economy is up and running again. 6 months.... I can't imagine going to a restaurant twice within 6 months of being off work for 6 months.

Are you suggesting the articles are listing people who merely visit hospital as being hospitalized?

Yes they were and so admissions protocols are being changed as  we speak and in fact people are beimg g sent home with no testing based on new protocol. Hospitals were being inundated no different than people using emergency for flus and colds. Because we have free medical care people believe they can have unlimited access to hospital services.

How much do you need and what is my collateral to get paid back ?

I've got a half share in a really cheap house in france, a 32 year old food truck and a signed photo of Vinny Jones grabbing Gazza by the plums. Shouldn't amount to more than your yearly spending on single malt and Havana cigars...

Are you prepared to abandon all left wing political positions and  solemnly swear fealty to the right wing nutjobs ?

Our health system is like an aircraft carrier; it can change course but only slowly. Novel infections are unusual because of the acute strain they can place on health care, the economy and society. It’s the rate of change that’s the big challenge. The fatality rate of C-19 is at the very least 7 times that of seasonal flu, a nontrivial difference. If a significant proportion of the population becomes infected, we just don’t have enough slack to accommodate such an abrupt rise in demand for ICU beds, and doctors may have to decide who gets the ventilators. The news from Italy this week has been truly frightening. Two months ago I was planning to spend April there; now Bergamo is like a war zone, and many more young people are ending up in hospital than I expected. Countries that acted early and decisively to C-19, like Taiwan and Singapore, have performed relatively well. It’s no coincidence they have had previous experience of similar disasters. Panic is never a good thing but fear can be highly useful.

Your rate of mortality is incorrect but everything else well stated. By the way to Argus et aI  Iespect your comments and respond but not to insult just to add to the discussion.

We all have been inundated with conflicting info at times depressing as hell. I am just trying to be positive I mean zero know it all attitude. I take anything Argus says with utmost respect.

Only if you accept environmentalism is a bipartisan issue.

Got a lot of family in the La Spezia area.  So far so good, but like you, I'm getting alarmed.

Well you have a right to of course but hang in and take it day by day. This will resolve.

I might just jack a yacht from the nearest marina and turn up on your doorstep in a month's time.

I might as well start getting to know Mrs Dougie now since your coal black heart won't last forever.

Oh well, I'm off to work my last shift at the pub. I'm kinda glad BoJo has taken it out of my hands, I was starting to think that I wasn't being socially responsible anyway.

From tomorrow I'm going into social isolation at the farm and I'll be eating rabbits and pheasants within a month.

They always told me vegetarianism was just a fad and 36 years later they might be proved right.

That's true but the first recorded case was fort Riley in Kansas in March 1918 and many researchers believe that was the origin.

What about Ebola or West Nile virus?

Oh, you predicted that the world's airlines would be sitting empty on the tarmac for months did you?

Lol.   Is this the first virus?

Is coronavirus  the deadliest virus?  Surely you' ve heard of the 1918 virus?

Tell me, while you are at it Nostradamus, what are this week's lottery numbers?

You tell me. After all, it's your people who are playing Nostradamus with the environment!  How many years do they say we have now before "it's too late?"   They know!  They keep making predictions about earth!

However....you went off-script with your "Gaia moves in mysterious ways" adlib - confusing earth with the Abrahamic God! giggle.gif

What about looking for solutions

Aren't they looking and creating solutions?    I though that's what vaccines are for!

Bear in mind also, the politicians don't actually run the country, the bureaucracy runs the country, so this is being run by the professionals

Basically the professionals brief the politicians and give them a range of options to pick from

That being said they are under no obligation to take that advice, lots of cases of this happening in this country, the Ross rifle comes to mind, the last thing the military wanted was this rifle even after it was issued.......and that was under war time circumstances....Tell me the Airforce wanted used F-18 as an interim aircraft....Todays government scares the crap out of me, for not really listening to the subject matter experts...

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

Vaccines are going to be a while, in the meantime Plaquenil is a good solution, it will work, they're already using it in the hospitals

Just don't take it until you actually get sick, because it does have some side effects.

True, but if you say ignore the advice of General Vance and then things go badly, you're liable, so they tend to pick one of the options presented by the professionals

In terms of bad equipment purchases, that's DND, bro, they recommend all that stupid shit to the politicians, the Puzzle Palace at NDHQ is the source of most of the problems
