Kellie Leitch is on the right track when she asked if Canada should screen immigrants for their values. That's how majority of Canadians feel now. There is a "hardening" on immigration.

CBC-Angus Reid Institute poll: Canadians want minorities to do more to 'fit in'

In a national polling partnership between CBC and the Angus Reid Institute, 68 per cent of Canadian respondents said minorities should be doing more to fit in with mainstream society instead of keeping their own customs and languages.

The same question was put to Americans, with only 53 per cent of respondents saying minorities need to better adjust.

The Canadian response represents a hardening of attitudes away from multiculturalism over time.

"It is maybe not what conventional wisdom might expect. But what these findings show is there are real limits on what Canadians — regardless of their own heritage or walk of life — are prepared to put up with in terms of accommodation and the sense of the mosaic versus the melting pot."

The poll was conducted in the wake of a series of issues that dogged politicians as they contested last year's federal election: a proposed ban on niqabs in public service; the Syrian refugee crisis; and terrorist attacks both in Europe and on Parliament Hill.

The results also hint at why Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch believes she may be onto a winning issue by asking supporters their thoughts on vetting would-be immigrants and refugees for "anti-Canadian values."

That said, when nearly 70 per cent of people in this country are saying they would like to see minorities do more to fit in, it is something that bears watching, particularly because that view has hardened over the last 25 years."

I'll be voting for whoever puts Canadian interest first and foremost. I'm looking at Leitch.

All those Conservatives who rebuked Leitch for stating such a simple question, are automatically off my list.

They're nothing more than the usual panderers - shades of Liberals.

Leitch is 100% wrong, and a poll filled with false dichotomies does nothing to help her. Leitch is not interested in Canadians, she is interested in propagating fear in order to enrich herself. She is the pretender - shades of Trump. You ignorer the part of the poll that says the vast majority of Canadians are satisfied with how immigrants are fitting in, why is that? Leitch is the propagator of anti-Canadian values, low life fear mongering.

I saw an interview on CBC with Angus Reid, and he referred to a poll of about 4000 people, not the hinky-dinky one that was online. Anyway, it seems that the poll asked something like: "Do you think immigrants should do more to fit in?" and over half said "Yes", and another question was "Are you satisfied with the way in which immigrants have assimilated" and again, more than half said yes; the first question was about the future, the second about the past. The other interesting thing was that this was quite different depending on age; younger people (up and coming voters) were more open to immigration, old fogeys less so. Here's the link to the interview, hope it works: https://www.facebook.com/cbcnews/videos/vb.5823419603/10154689651434604/?type=2&theater. The info on immigration starts around 15:20. The interview is a bit long, but it was interesting I thought. If the link doesn't work, you can search Facebook "CBC and Angus Reid Live".

BTW, I'm betting Betsy falls into the 17% of the cohort he calls "Faith Based Traditionalists", which is composed of immigrants by a factor of 2 to 1. If we slow down on immigration, that group will also decrease. :)

Actually she is right and it is not just here that it is happening. We cant keep playing this game, where countries just dump their people on our shores. It is time for ''the people'' to take a stand in their own countries .

My position on this is not based on faith. It's just based on simple common sense.

I don't wonder at all that younger people are very open to immigration - especially to immigrants that contradict their

own values!

Common sense - that seems to be disappearing on a lot of younger folks now - the lack of, or inability, to use it.

If there's any evidence showing mankind to be regressing, this must be it. :)

Only fools would take in people who feels hostile, or are incompatible to the hosts' values, who refuses to assimilate.

Any relationship couldn't, and wouldn't, survive on that. The host country is only inviting trouble.

That's a no-brainer.

My position on this is not faith-based. It's just simple common sense.

Angus Reid identifies 5 groups, ranging from very progressive to very conservative. You would fall into the faith-based group, I believe, which is two-thirds recent immigrants. Its not just that you are religious, but also other beliefs that you express. I'd link you to the page so you could try to prove me wrong, but I'm on my phone now. Should be able to Google it easily enough, if you've a mind to.

What makes me fall on the faith-based group?

What is "recent" immigrant? How recent is "recent?" Can you explain, please.

Furthermore, my other beliefs would be that of conservatives - I'm conservative!

Having conservative values does not make one automatically, religious!

Who are you, to conclude, and label me as such?

If my stance is faith-based, I'd be likely to be in-lined with the Pope when it comes to immigration and borders!

But I'm not. I don't buy what the Pope says.....after all, he's got walls surrounding the Vatican.

No, the burden is on you to provide your source.....and to explain yourself.

I'm willing to bet you didn't understand your source. Or, more likely....you're putting your own spin on it.

So now we'll start requiring immigrants to learn Ojibwa? Even I can't speak much Ojibwa and I trace my roots back to New France. It's like we're asking immigrants to be more Canadian than Canadians.

From Dialamah's own link:

Analysis: Canadians aren't as accepting as we think — and we can't ignore it,

writes Angus Reid

There's a gap between polling data and the way many Canadians traditionally see themselves

By Angus Reid, CBC News Posted: Oct 04, 2016

On immigration, the vast majority of Canadians prefer a policy that will enhance our economic prosperity over one that emphasizes the needs of people in crisis around the world.

Despite the progress we've made, immigration and multiculturalism are likely to become a matter of even greater debate in the coming years. Already, there are signs of cracks in the experience of Canadians in their everyday lives.

Asked whether they are satisfied or dissatisfied with how well new immigrants are integrating in their communities, about one-third of Canadians say they are dissatisfied.

Though still a minority perception, that adds up to a lot of resentment among millions of Canadians that can't be ignored.

Furthermore, on the video that Dialamah gave, Angus Reid defined 1/3 of Canadians, as ADULT Canadians! Timer: 16:49

As for generational divide, timer: 17:30

Many live in Quebec and cross over to work but that does not go both ways. But Canadians are getting tired of being treated like pansies, by being told how you will live, with whom and what rights you will have to give up ,so not to offend anyone.

Many Ontarians steal Torontonians' jobs too. It's time for the City of toronto to put its foot down, create a municipal ID card, and if you don't have it, you can't work there. Seriously, bloody Leitches.

Wow. All that? Hell has no fury like a progressive who hears an idea he doesn't like.

All she actually did was ask in a survey whether Canada ought to screen potential immigrants for their hostility towards Canadian values.

But boy, you seem like you're in a rage over the possibility this might lower the number of extremely religious Muslims coming to Canada. Perhaps they share your values too closely.

Dump people on our shores? We practically beg them to come here.

So we can pay for their food, clothing and shelter for the rest of their lives...

I'm not begging. I'd rather they stay home.

Actually, MP Kellie Leitch has been in politics since 2011,  so it is more accurate to propose that Trump is a shade of Leitch.

As the OP amply demonstrates,  Canadian values now and in the past include expectations and fear of immigrants without invoking the usual American narrative and reference.

There are only two relevant questions you should ask any wannabe immigrants:

1) How much money have you got?

2) What can you do?(What skills do you have?)

Depending on answers to those questions you should easily be able to decide whether to let someone in or deny entry.

I mean, women, who don't properly cover their hair and face are murdered as a lesson to the rest. Also, no I won't shake your hand. I don't touch filthy infidels. Oh, my skill? I'm an expert at web site creation. I did a number of jobs for Al Quaeda and ISIS. want to see my work, you disgusting piece of godless vermin? Someday the Caliphate will ensure people like you are put in your proper place. Under the ground! Now where's my passport?

Canada does not need to beg. We just open the border gates and bring them on in. Don't worry about how much this will cost the taxpayer, we will work out something. If neccasary we will take the money from other Canadians who may need it or just raise taxes. What our politicians won't do to make themselves look politically correct. It's so wonderful to see.

I agree. No money, no entry. The days for showing pity are over. We cannot afford bleeding heart liberalism anymore. Canada and Canadians have bills to pay.

Especially bringing in people from other countries who refuse to assimilate. Our immigration policy should go back to where it once was, before the seventies, where multiculturalism and diversity words were never used in Canada.  Canada is not looking like Canada once looked like.
