Great article Capricorn. This really drives the point home that for the Liberals this was a political/election issue. Now that they are in lower the urgency is gone and reality has set it.

Again, I don't think this was the key issue that made people vote for Trudeau but it certainly speaks volumes about what he will say or promise just to get in

Your post reminded me of something. Van Kessel, the senior bureaucrat, referred to the Kosovo refugee program of 1999. At that time Chretien was Prime Minister and would be well informed of the logistics involved in such an undertaking. Supposedly Chretien has mentored Trudeau Jr. and he has been known to give him advice on various matters. Could it be that Chretien didn't advise him on the folly of bringing in so many Syrian refugees in such a short period of time? Or did Chretien advise him against it and he ignored that advice? Hmm.

So in other words, you have no clue as to the benefit packages being offered.

In Sweden's case it is due to being offered housing and a refugee's benefit if adult as soon as you reach Sweden...much more if you're looking for work or taking various 'integration programs'. The UK has a similar approach with programs like VPR (Vulnerable Person Relocation) which also offers money and housing to those approved entry. Countries like Denmark that offer far less money and benefits to refugees are naturally less popular among those fleeing war and death.

So how would you compare that to Canada?

The media still has a huge crush on Trudeau so no one is holding his feet to the fire on this one, but this is a perfect example of him not having a clue what he is talking about.

I don't have gov't connections, I have never hung out with an ex-pm who has tried to bring in thousands of refugees before, and yet I was still well aware of the fact that bringing in 35K refugees in less than 2 months was impossible.

The village idiot is also the mayor here in Canada.

Or did Chretien tutor him on how to make a lofty election promise that he had no intention of keeping....i.e like Chretien saying he would get rid of the GST

Politicians who lie about stuff, who woulda thunk it, in this day and age?

Unless sponsored, 'Syrians' seem to not like Canada too much. But, I'm sure 50,000 can be found if one looks hard enough. Perhaps they can empty the prisons. :D

so... now that you've had time to googleUP, you're backing away from your earlier "it's in the curry" response? But c'mon - you're not quite there yet... you still haven't done any kind of representative comparison to Canadian programs. Perhaps you should just let it go and stick with your "curry response"!

Your post reminded me of something.

perhaps you and MLW member 'Accountability Now' can offer comment on how Canada managed to relocate approximately 60,000 Vietnamese refugees in a little over a year - that's quite the inconvenient truth for that lil' nugget you offered up. Face it - the only thing of any interest to Conservative supporters here is to whine/wail about a campaign referenced target/time period that might extend by a few months.

I think you've been schooled enough on the topic. Good luck with the rest of your idol's promises.

the very fact you have to resort to touting your "schooling' prowess says it all! The waldoRubbin' clearly has you so flummoxed so as to have to personalize with your "idol's" reference. Try again; try harder next time!

You're free to sponsor as many 'Syrians' as you'd like. I'm not trying to stop you.

didn't say you were... I implied... no wait, let me categorically state that you made a claim, repeatedly, and when asked to simply expand on your claim, particularly in regards to your pointed comparison to Canada, you, apparently... couldn't. And instead, you tried to deflect and laugh it off with your "it's in the curry" reply.

So how many 'Syrians' ARE you taking? Line-up at the can or what?

it's unfortunate that you feel challenged/threatened to the point you resort to personalization. Perhaps if you can't stick to the topic... or support your repeated statements... this may not be the thread for you - just sayin! Carry on.

So....none? That's too bad. What will the 'Syrians' do without your help?

Anybody wanna weigh in on that.

yup! World travel opens many previously sheltered/isolated minds to the valued diversity of peoples. Offering life-bettering... life-saving... avenues to refugees shouldn't be viewed as a threat; rather, aside from the basic humanitarian aspect, they're opportunities to enhance Canada's makeup.

I just had a conversation with one of my very good friends in Berlin. Seems some of these refugees (I believe some of ours) are being housed in a nearby sports complex (built in the '50s). They seem to have diplomatic level of immunity from prosecution, and the resulting crime wave has made life so dangerous that he has taken his wife and children back to Ekaterinburg for safety, leaving his job, lease apartment, etc. behind.

Yes, travel can open your mind, but you must first take off the rose coloured glasses and actually see WTF goes on in the rest of the world.

I bet a lot of the bigoted red neck right wing conservatives who post on here have never been any farther afield than from wheer they can see mommy and daddys house. Anybody wanna weigh in on that. I expect some of the mods will.

I am a bigoted, right wing, red neck conservative. I also deal with business and political leaders from dozens of countries, travel extensively and have had many extended stays in places not exactly recommended as tourist destinations, including active war zones. Sorry to burst your bubble, Bubba.

I guess that depends on who you are addressing with your blanketed, stereotypical comments that are meant as a personal insult. If it's me by chance then I'll help you out and let you know that I've been in every continent on this planet and deal with people from various countries on a weekly basis. With that said, don't let my facts stop you from getting in the way of your personal insults.

.....and if your self-righteous, holier-than-thou, drive-by smear-everyone comment was in any way directed at me - I'll remind you that I've stated more than once that most Canadians who have trouble with people "who are different" most often change their tune when second generation immigrants and refugees come out of our schools and surprise! They speak just like us and act like us. That's because they are "us" All that's needed is patience, optimism - and a very careful approach to helping newcomers integrate to Canadian society.

You mean like cutting GST revenue? If you say so. I'm pretty sure I recall you or someone like you saying this was a really bad economic decision but a really good political one.

Complete nonsense. cutting the GST didn't harm the economy. It wasn't a bad economic decision at all. Stop trying to blame that on Justin's reckless and irresponsible new spending when the budget was almost in balance.

... when the budget was almost in balance.

at least you're no longer claiming "balanced"! But hey now, in April 2015, former Harper Conservative Finance Minister predicted a $2.4 billion surplus (including the so-called $1 billion contingency fund)... that was realistic, right? Recognizing the magic of selling GM shares and government real estate assets, just how "almost" is your "almost"? Since you keep dropping like references to this, surely you must be able to supply real numbers - yes? Just make sure to include refugee costs for related/projected relocation. But hey now, didn't Canadians inform Harper (and Mulcair) that deficit spending was the 'order of the day'?

Yes, if there's one thing Justin knows how to do, it's deficit spend. He'll guarantee that the budget won't see anything close to balance for many years to come.
