BC_chick Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 (edited) Romney's own uncaring attitude, lack of tax honesty and 47% comments sunk him. Squid, I agree 100%. While the GOP would do well to cut back a little on the social-conservatism, I think everyone is reading way too much into the existentialism of the party. Romney was a tough sell. He made loads of money off the blood of dying companies. He hid his money overseas, he didn't release tax-records (k, everyone knows he's rich so it's obviously not his earnings he's hiding). And he's just not a decent guy. The man put his dog on the roof of his car. He bullied other students. These are not characteristics that are usually held in esteem. That's complete lack of empathy; a very bad quality for a president. A decent GOP candidate would've won this election in a heartbeat, Obama really wasn't in a good position. Mitt just wasn't a very likeable character and that's why the GOP lost. I know it's difficult to see that if you supported him, but in my opinion Mitt lost the battle more than the GOP did. Michael Hardner Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 I saw some "highlights" from the FOX News coverage last night. Hilarious. They questioned the results like the questioned tHe polls or the Bureau of Statistics' unemployment numbers! So funny.... That's consistent, though. They are suspicious of academic knowledge, and when confronted by the power of such knowledge they get emotional. I watched the whole thing live... it was very satisfying. Also because we got to see the lovely Megyn Kelly in full stride... but apparently that was contrived as a way to get viewers. Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! You have to realize that it wasn't the results they were questioning but their own projections. Remember they called Florida too early in 2000 and they certainly don't want to revisit that scenario. Then to top it off, instead of picking up an empathetic VP candidate to round out the ticket, they put in Paul Ryan. Quote
GostHacked Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Speak for yourself. It's true, try to engage people and ask them what they think? many people who are not active on forums like these don't give a flying crap if the government is lying to them or not. However is you ask them about any popular TV show or sports team, you are going to get a flurry of questions/concerns. Quote
cybercoma Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 It looks like Obama cut quite a swath through the Bible Belt too. Quote
carepov Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 I prefer the explanation I heard on CBC election coverage... people accept half-truths because they can build their own bubble world reality that matches what they want to believe...so they're sticking their fingers in their ears essentially... I also liked that explanation from the Republican panelist on CBC and was very impressed with her analysis of her party. Does anyone know her name? Quote
Argus Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Agreed. Republicans babbling about "legitimate rapes" and rape caused pregnancies being part of G-d's plan are in an alternate reality. They took down Romney who himself would have been a major asset to the country. Dunno about that. Seems to me we he was as flip floppish as "Mr. Dithers" was. I prefer a man who states his opinions and stants up for them to one who swings like a weathervane. Bitsy Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 I was amused looking at the county level maps on some websites last night. Mostly red which small patches of blue in every state. Except the blue patches corresponded to the major population centers in the state. I wonder what the largest city that voted Republican. Dallas? Nope, not Dallas...Obama won Dallas!!! Quote
Smallc Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 It was interesting, I was watching something the other day, and they were talking about how Texas will one day in the not too distant future be a swing state because of increased urbanization and demographic changes. Quote

I think it will within the next 10 years or so. We have all the demograhics that Obama won...Hispanics, blacks, Asian Americans, high concenration of working women, lots of college students, respected medical and research faciilites, etc. Quote

-TSS- Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 When I was listening to the election-night analysis I found it very interesting that they pointed out that no incumbent President has been re-elected at a time of such a high uemployment as the national average is 7.9%. However, that is a prime example of if you look into statistics hard enough you will always find some new record which has been broken. The Republicans are becoming more and more a party of ageing white men living in rural areas. Even though the proportion of ageing people is temporarily on a rise there is no future for a party which is considered by the larger electorate as some sort of grand-daddies' party. Quote
