This is good, it makes me wonder if it is just a better move to knock the nickle too and make a NEOLOONIE 10x the value of the old one and forget the nightmare of subparity forever. We could also opt to start using terms like pence. Edited March 29, 2012 by MACKER Quote

eyeball Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 Harper should call an election right away and run on a plank to eliminate the penny!!!!! Actually this'll probably have more of an impact than people realize. Pricing something at .99 is always better than rounding it up to the dollar and I doubt retailers will be enthusiastic about rounding prices down to .95 so this budget will probably help fuel inflation. What's to say people can't price things at .99 cent? You won't pay 99 cents anyway because of tax. This will only effect people who pay cash, and who does that? Quote

Shady Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 This is a good move. People that pay cash are a dying minority anyways. It's time these people stepped into the 90s and used a debit card. Quote

Topaz Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 I can understand getting rid of it since it cost 1.6 cent to make it. Guess who came up with this idea? NDP Pat Martin. He said he was suprised when he saw it in the budget. My question is, what happens to the US penny when this goes into effect this fall? I don't think they can legally destroy another country's legal tender can we? Quote

Boges Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 (edited) And what about the children, just make them eat kittens? I never said ban cash, I take cash out to pay for Timmy's or when I go out with friends because it's easier to split the bill that way. Are children often buying gas and groceries? But to say that having to lose up to 3 cents on a transaction because pennies aren't being dispensed is some sort of hardship is rather hilarious. Regarding the US penny, I didn't hear them say they'd destroy the penny, they just won't make new ones. Edited March 29, 2012 by Boges Quote

But why wouldn't we be able to destroy USA pennies? It isn't against Canadian law. And American law does not apply. Quote

Sorry, store has a policy where you must buy a certain amount to make a credit card purchase. Because the credit card companies charge the store a fee per transaction. Quote
GostHacked Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 Canadian pennies and American pennies will continue to be accepted as legal tender. They just aren't circulating new ones. And they are not even being made out of copper anymore. All other coins are being switched as well to be comprised of other alloys .... the nickle is no longer made of nickle, the penny , no longer made of copper, the dollar no longer made out of money.
