Boges Posted March 26, 2012 Report Posted March 26, 2012 This Saturday at 8:30pm. I actually tried to do it this one year (of course I still had the TV on ) I went to the potty and it was just a natural to turn the light on. So what was I supposed to bring a candle in their or a flashlight? What purpose does this event serve? Quote

eyeball Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 What purpose does this event serve? A punchline to a bad joke or so it would seem. Meanwhile in La La land... A group of scientists is calling on the Harper government to abandon plans to water down the Fisheries Act. Langer said the proposed changes fit with other changes the Harper government is making, "watering down our overall approach to protect our environment." Next government, the agenda will be to undo all the damage the Harper government has done to Canada. But it's not Harper's fault, it's we fools who get easily deceived and give power to these people, then they have a mandate for 5 years to do anything they want to the country, without inhibition. Really, in our political system there should be no majority. That would be in the best interest of Canadians. Quote

Boges Posted March 27, 2012 Author Report Posted March 27, 2012 I did it once without a problem. Turned everything off and went for a walk for an hour or so. That's the thing, my lights are off most of the time because the majority of my day I'm either asleep or not at home. Lights are a very small component of my carbon footprint. Is this PR stunt supposed to make me think about a world without electricity? What about home heat? Quote
Guest Manny Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 That's the thing, my lights are off most of the time because the majority of my day I'm either asleep or not at home. You mean like right now? Lights are a very small component of my carbon footprint. Is this PR stunt supposed to make me think about a world without electricity? What about home heat? Tell you what, I've thought that there should be an actual CREDIT for people who use less energy. If you drive less mileage, use less electricity, have a lower heating bill you should be eligible for a tax break. That gives an incentive to the masses, where even a small amount saved per household becomes a substantial amount for the system. Quote

But we live in a world where cleaner often = more expensive, so there really is no incentive other than than a lower energy bill. But here in Ontario prices are going up regardless of your usage. capricorn Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 But here in Ontario prices are going up regardless of your usage. Ontario produces more electricity than it needs. Excess capacity is sold off to some of our neighbours at a much lower price than we Ontarians pay. So the more we conserve, the more electricity is available for Ontario to sell off. Lovely system. I want to help Ontario get rid of excess electricity so I'll keep my lights shining on Earth Day. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." Will Rogers
eyeball Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 the real agenda of Earth Hour organizers is to get politicians around the world to use sanctions and taxation to prevent individuals from being able to freely use Earth’s resources, Well, it's mostly politics and habitat destruction that's preventing people where I live from freely using wild salmon any more. Oh look, the politicians just announced they're getting out of the business of protecting salmon and their habitat. Who knows, maybe that'll help.
