Talking about the press: A few days ago PM Trudeau had unannounced meetings with registered lobbyists in closed-to-press sessions. I don’t see any complaints about muzzling the press and so on from the media. I guess they were all okay with him speaking to the Canadian Labour Congress leaders with no advisory also. Given the secret payoffs Ontario Liberals are making to unions, is it such a good idea for Liberal PM to not let us watch CLC speech?

  3. Well, the good news is that if Trudeau gets too intimidated by Vladimir Putin, he can always send Foreign Affairs Minister Dion to negotiate with Russia.

Seriously, Scribblet? Did Putin listen to Harper's tough talk? Harper told him face to face "Get out of Ukraine!" and Putin joked about it to the press later on. "I was worried he would faint."

      kimmy

Tough talk doesn't work when everybody knows you have nothing to back it up with.

"Talk loudly and carry a teeny tiny stick!" could have been Harper's foreign affairs motto.

  4. How would it do that - they can still advertise and register as third parties.
  5. The weather and the social life, lots of dinners and dancing.... Got this from the Snowbird Assoc. Recently, a number of news articles have been published regarding a 2014 federal government memo and the Entry/Exit Initiative (entry and exit information sharing program between Canada and the United States). The memo states that the Government of Canada will use the information from the Entry/Exit Initiative in order to determine if individuals are meeting residency requirements for certain social benefits. Unfortunately, these reports have mistakenly linked the content of this memo with Canadian snowbirds. The issue is, the kind of benefits which are discussed in the memo, such as employment insurance and child benefits do not impact retired Canadian snowbirds. The only benefit which is mentioned which could have an effect on our members is Old Age Security, however, there are no residency limits relating to the continued payment of OAS (and CPP) as long as the individual has lived in Canada for 20 years past the age of 18. In my opinion, this would really only impact expats living abroad but still collecting various Canadian benefits. The CSA has discussed this issue with several media sources (TV, print and radio) in order to clarify this issue. We will also be addressing this matter in the upcoming issue of CSANews.
  6. When the Star isn't happy with it then we know something is wrong.
  7. People are not inhumane, racist or xenophobic for recognizing that taking in huge numbers of migrants would place great strain and pressure on our health systems, housing and schools. These are genuine and responsible concerns, as is the concern or culture class which will be inevitable.
  8. Of course they are partisan. We can't stop third parties from advertising or spending their forced union dues on anti conservative ads but the gov't could limit third party advertising as in the Federal elections - level the playing field a bit. Interesting that it just so happens that the amount paid to these Unions for "expenses" is nearly dollar for dollar what the unions spent on their pro Liberal anti-Conservative attack ads which placed order to get Wynne's Liberals elected.
  9. They could be required to pay U.S. taxes if they are over a certain number of days (there's a formula) which is why snowbirds should be filling out the IRS form 8840. This explains it better than I can. http://www.ey.com/CA/en/Services/Tax/TaxMatters-March2014-Info-sharing-at-border They have meets in Texas and Arizona too.
  10. Harper is not 'going after snowbirds' it's always been a requirement that they fill out the required tax forms and it's always been that snowbirds could lose their health coverage if they are out of the country for more than 210 days (Ontario). Snowbirds currently in receipt of OAS and CPP will not lose their pensions even if they are over 183 days out of the country. If you don't fill out the 8840 it's possible that the U.S. could consider you a resident for tax purposes but you have to be out of Canada for more than 7 months, it's still best to fill the forms out anyway. We do. You could lose EI benefits and health care, but that has always been the case. The difference is in the tracking and information sharing which wasn't done very efficiently before, now it will be so anyone trying to scam the system will be caught. I'm going to see what the Snowbird Association has to say about this, they usually clarify thing quickly. So far nothing. http://www.snowbirds.org/tax-forms
  11. The tsunami is happening now in Europe, countries are swamped unable to cope, including Germany. Greece, Calais, Germany and more are struggling to feed and house them. In Germany the police chief has called for separating groups due to violence and clashes. While 25,000 is a drop in the bucket compared to Europe, we should still bring them in, in an orderly manner making sure they are vetted and processed first. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/germany/11896855/Christian-and-Muslim-refugees-should-be-housed-separately-says-German-police-chief.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/greece/11950421/More-than-50000-migrants-arrive-in-Greece-in-one-week-the-highest-total-of-2015.html
  12. I agree. Motive matters in Canada if it's a hate crime as per the Criminal Code, such a crime must have been committed with a bias motivation. It's the same thing, I don't see how a person can believe in hate crime legislation but not agree that there is a bias motivation in an honour killing. Actually, honour killing should come under the same legislation.
  13. For all those who whined and moaned about the CPC not being legitimate because of the popular vote, read this one: Harper - 39.6% of popular vote Trudeau - 39.5 per cent of the popular vote. http://www.cbc.ca/news2/interactives/results-2015/

  14. Yeah.. I want them now... How about a Senate seat for Craig Oliver
  15. The Prince Arthur Herald says: to have markedly regressed in the quality of leadership the Liberal war room must have determined, in an exhaustive campaign post-mortem, “Smart is out.” - And so they embarked upon the evident solution: to propel the Son of God, whatever his own bona fides, to the leadership. And the voters seem about to swallow the meal whole

I probably would have voted liberal if the leader wasn't such an empty headed dolt, I am obviously not a member of the target audience

  16. It’s about payoffs for Wind Power contracts and $18,600 in donations that NextEra made to the Ontariio Liberal Party in 2011. He is saying it had undue influence on the auction, he should win his case. Hydro One and the corrupt Liberal Government need to be held accountable for their actions.
  17. It’s always reassuring to hear a party leader make his first priority to "Get rid of Stephen Harper" and gain personal power instead of caring about Canadians and Canada.

Scribbler - it's an election... getting rid of the current government is always the first priority of the other parties... I'll bet Harper said something similar about the Liberals 10 years ago.

MG - Some might not see enough difference between the two... ;)

  18. Vote against hate pllqt.it/DfjiFT On balance, he has been a good Prime Minister in trying times, and yet he drives people to frenzies of hatred, which says far more about them than him. One might have thought that Harper Derangement Syndrome could not reach any higher orbit

IM pretty sure he got out becuase the Egyptians let him go when they were damn well good and ready, perhaps if Trudeau had been in charge and had been extra super nice and cuddly to the Egyptians he would have gotten out sooner, these are things children believe.

At least Tony Abbott had the jam to pick up the phone and call Egypt on behalf of one of his citizen and look how quick he got let out.

      ^^^^ utter wankery.

The reason the Aussie got out is because he was solely an Aussie citizen. Fahmy and the other guy were both Egyptian citizens, and thus were considerd to be worthy of special treatment from the Egyptians, which they got.

  20. I'm tired of these ingrate Canadians of Convenience who just use Canada and our passport. Why did he give his Egyptian passport when arrested and why did he show the Egyptian flag in court? Something stinks here with the cozy relationship with the NDP and Fahmy spinning a false narrative about positive results achieved by PM Harper in relation to his release. He’s not mentioning that he’s suing his employer Al Jazeera either.
