pre-WWII Newfoundland was an economic wasteland. Arguably the war saved Newfoundland in several ways. GB definitely wanted to dump Newfoundland as a Dominion responsibility - GB was broke and basically couldn't continue supporting the island Newfoundland was strategic in WWII and it's economy basically boomed during the conflict - GB negotiated Newfoundland territory for lead lease agreements. Newfoundland had a tariff on imports from Canada ..... to protect the islands commerce - the island was basically controlled by family compact. Joining Canada would have meant dropping the tariffs and a loss of the status-quo control. There was (2) provincial ballots to join Canada ......... the first ballot didn't include the option to join Canada .. During strange political machinations - the Canadian option was included on the second ballot? ......... the options then became: status quo (self government), stay with GB or become a province of Canada. The 3rd option won by a slim margin ......... it's said that the promise of Canadian government benefits carried the vote. Canada was largely indifferent to whatever happened. Becoming a U.S. State was never seriously considered - more the pity.

There will never be a military annexation of Canada - arguably China won't allow it. Over 60 percent of U.S. oil is imported from our ally(?) to the north............ worse is that the trans-mountain pipeline is rapidly opening not just Chinese but Asian markets. The Canadian government has the whip hand in that it can divert exports to the U.S. for increasing Asian markets. Without getting into the weeds - U.S. refineries are designed to process heavy crude - Canuck flavor. Retooling these refineries to accept so-called sweet crude in economically a non-starter. Of real concern tho is fresh water - to put it in blunt terms - Canada controls the largest supply of fresh water on the planet - to wit - the Great Lakes Basin........... by restricting flow into the Great Lakes Canada can control the drain. Due to climate change (or whatever) the U.S. is drying up - rivers, aquifers are running dry - depleted rainfall due to said, 'climate change' is going to prove disastrous to large U.S. cities and agriculture. ............... we've all heard it and seen the depletion - it is going to get worse. Plans have been made to use the Great Lakes Basin to supply these potential deserts. Recently, Carney took control of the Great Lakes (Great Lake Protection Act) supply - no exports without Canadian approval - sounds absurd. If enforced, it is hard to quantify the impact on U.S. manufacturing, domestic use, agriculture.

The odd part is that post-1st incident he wasn't arrested? WTF He kicked in a federal vehicle and he wasn't arrested. Likely, during the encore incident he was recognized and his get-out-of-jail-card had expired.

Any military actions by the U.S. depend on the desires of Israel and SA. SA and other regional countries are against it. Israel on the other hand is understandably keen for a strike, and strikes, and strikes ..........u get the idea. Considering recent events, China has a better chance of making Canada it's 25th Province. There will never be any military option to annex Canada..............pseudo thru economics? Maybe, but Trump would need a 4th term - the timeline is short and the Canadian economy is adjusting. I have to admit ........ blue on blue with NATO would be interesting. Given time Canada will likely become a global resource powerhouse ....... ditto Greenland (Denmark). I see the attraction

The pundits have identified several reasons for the conflict. My fav was an arms race and the glorification of military power. I’m sure that you’ve heard the term, ‘war is diplomacy by other means”? Well, leading up to WWI it was accepted as an alternative to yak-yak. Alliances between Nations were definitely a contributing factor – Germany in particular (post Franco-Prussian War) was incredibly concerned about being ‘boxed’ in by Russia and France. France of course had a bone to pick with the Prussians (Germany - Alsace Lorraine). What fueled the Arms Race was imperialism – let’s just say colonies abroad and the need to protect them. Lastly was Nationalism – the Balkans in particular and the desire for independence amongst ethnic groups. Of course that is where the pretext for WWI began with the assassination of the heir to Austria-Hungary. Russia backed Serbia and Germany backed Austria-Hungary. Germany attacked France thru Belgium which brought in GB. Make no mistake, the involved countries particularly the Continental countries, thirsted for the conflict. Of course they didn't realize that it would be 'total war' a war where modern weapon technology combined with 19th century conflict strategy would result in incredible losses - mind boggling. It is said that the BEF were lions led by donkeys - I would concur with that description.

Thirty years war as you know was a devastating conflict that began in Central Europe that included several regions, Denmark, Sweden, French. Suppose to have some understanding you have to go back to Holy Roman Empire (Catholicism), Martin Luther (Lutheranism), and the Protestant Reformation..... which ultimately led to Protestantism. The Thirty Years War was a religious conflict that began small ...... but over the 30 years included territory which today we would recognize as countries. It was a clash between Protestant (Christians) and Catholic (Christians). Beginning in what is now Czechia, the territory was predominantly Protestant ........ but governed by the minority, Catholics. In a move to convert the entire country to Catholicism and by extension become p/o Holy Roman Empire a bloody dispute erupted which was the squib that started the 30 years war. Sympathetic (Protestant) countries like Denmark, Sweden. France (Catholic but supported Denmark) The 30 Years War led to territorial changes in Europe - specifically France, Dutch (Republic), Sweden (Germany) ........ it also diminished the territory that was the Holy Roman Empire. Europe (and Asia) were always in a perpetual state of war - a constant clash of culture, religion. geo-conquest, heredity titles, treasure. colonialism, imperialism.
