  1. You are the type that would be blown away to find out that economics at the grad school is a glorified math degree. I never heard the words; socialism, Marx, Engels, Keynes, communism, mentioned even once in 5 years. Now the words that we did use; Econometrics, statistical constant, p-value, fixed effects, jacobian determinant. I know that you will google this words and regurgitate what you get from them. However, I bet that you have no idea that those terms actually mean. Besides, consumer demand is studied in two ways. First, by the representative agent and then later on as a whole (county, city, state, nation, whatever). At the grad school level, the first one is the more complex of the two.
  2. years ago, i had a weekly ritual of going to the gym during the week from 730 to 9 or so. This was the only time that I ever "watched" his show. I learned after the first time to bring headphones and therefore be able to listen to something else. As for what I saw that one time... garden variety political garbage.
  3. the six weeks prior to a major election are the worst time of the year. Robocalls, pamphlets, people knocking on the door, non-stop ads. Most of the time do not really care about the result.. mostly celebrating the end of this annoyance.
  4. I have school-aged children. Their school was built in 1982.. repeat 1982. Upon being built.. it had a mural of MLK in the west hall. So not to get confused.. this mural was put there in Summer 1982... not 2021. And yet, the first complaints about it came from parents in late 2020. It is not exactly woke if it has been there for 38 years already. Before you make assumptions... They do a brief lesson on MLK during the week of MLK day. What a concept... tell the students about this holiday.. and have been doing so for decades but now it is woke.
  5. This is one of those stories where there will be so much smoke that it is going to be nearly impossible to ever find out what started the fire. Yes, I know there are articles/opinions out there. However, I highly doubt that anyone on this forum was involved in the negotiations. If so, not sure what you are doing here.
  6. how do you think is the target demographic for sales? Hint... it is not the 65 year old + crowd
  7. However, Bud Light is going to continue on. Why? Lower price, consistent product, and ubiquitous access in the US. Also, beer sales go up in the summer when folks want something refreshing and relatively low ABV.
  8. Quite funny. Not a fan of the water known as Bud Light or Coors Light. I only drink on friday nights and my selection tonight is a Barrel-aged stout from So Cal that comes in at 12.9 % ABV
  9. Ok, you seem a bit rational. So my influence is limited. So seems rational to focus on those i can influence. .. friends/family instead of thinking of myself as some all-powerful force that changes society.
  10. Now.. .think about it for just a second.. Can you simply generalize across the board when it comes to demand for gasoline? Does it help to think about the average person and how they decide to buy gas or not. If so, how much? Does where they live matter? Does this influence why a given person would buy an EV or not?
  11. Another interesting item is how acknowledging that blacks, hispanics, and natives were not always treated the best in the past is "woke". Being a slave would have not been pleasant.
  12. interesting questions. I do not know the answer being as I do not know Trudeau all that well. I would agree that you would want less debt not more. Obviously one can go too far.. Japan being the best example. My initial inclination is that this is a politician wanting to do something just to do something. I see it all of the time. They get bored and can't have weeks/months going by without their name in the news.. people forget about you.
  13. Hmmm.. Looking at Principles of Microeconomics by Gregory Mankiw (politically conservative, if you must know) and the chapter on demand.. it talks about why a given person buys something. They have a budget constraint, preferences, and such. Hmmm... In grad school, there were countless articles and books about why the individual does what they do. Quite interesting honestly. Such as why people will opt for 1.00 today versus 1.25 tomorrow. Or why they are willing to lie when it comes to short term or small gains but not so when the stakes are bigger or more in the future.
  14. Back to the topic, Not sure why Montana would do this. While a very Conservative state, it is also one where third parties do relatively well.
  15. I do not disagree. I could go into the finite details to back up what you say but why put everybody to sleep? Instead of wanting everyone to borrow and cost themselves dearly in the long term... how about they lessen the tax burden on a consumer even if it is only temporary?
  16. Microeconomics is not just about companies. It is mostly about why a person does what they do with their time, money, or other scarce resources. There is no supply (companies) if not for personal demand. Why are there no typewriter retail outlets in Utah.. not a single one? Hmmm.. no individuals demand it
  17. In-Bev spends millions doing market research. They know their target audience. Prior to doing this.. they did extensive research and they are motivated by the bottom line above all things. Therefore.. it was a calculated gamble. My guess is that this will blow over and be mostly forgotten by summer 2023. The same happened with kneeling by NFL players.
  18. Borrowing can help things in the short term. However, given the interest rates and expectations of them going into the future.. the math does not work. short term gains are exceeded by long term costs.
  19. I do have control over myself and my thoughts. However, this idea that I have control over society as a whole.. Ha, you are funny.
  20. I was once homeless. It was Salt Lake city from August 1999 to November 1999. The homeless population that i encountered could be grouped into 4 categories. First, mentally ill and therefore self-medicating with drugs and alcohol. Second, deliberately homeless. Mostly able-bodied but makes a living from panhandling, government assistance in rare cases, and charitable help (the church). Third, had jobs but their drug/alcohol/sex addictions ate up all of their cash and so they chose to live on the street rather than pay rent. Fourth (and the smallest group) was the hard luck type where the house of cards simply fell apart. That was myself. Moved there thinking that a 21 year old with a solid work history would have no problem getting a job. Well, that did not happen. Had a job lined up prior to getting there and upon arriving, the employer told me, "We do not need you, have a good one" while hiring my friend. We arrived on Saturday and he was out of town on monday and my car broke down on monday night. When I would ask why they came from Oakland, St. George, Flagstaff, etc to SLC.. the answer was this place had jobs, money, customers, etc. Yes, there is drug use in small towns but you have to very discreet and usually the drugs come in from the city so why not be at the source.
  21. Why do we see homelessness in cities and not small towns (population of 5,000 or less). First, folks go out of their way to go to cities.. if you do not believe it then explain why the urban population in the US is growing faster than the rural. To be homeless in Reno offers you more opportunities for panhandling, food, resource, or even a job than would Bottineau, ND. Second, more folks live in Reno, Oakland, Seattle than do Bottineau and so if a normal person was to hit some hard times.. it is more likely to happen in a city than Bottineau. Simple math. 1 in 25,000 (just a random number) is susceptible to being homeless... well there is only 2.000 in Bottineau so you may never encounter one.
  22. You act like I have complete control. That is funny.
  23. You should really get to know your male politicians. See them away from the camera. What do they all have in common? they want to be a hero, a savior, etc. This is why they almost never vote against spending bills. They do not want to be the one that costs anyone a job. It does not matter if the job should not exist at all to begin with.
  24. And you think that only women vote for spending bills which increase the public debt.. Wow, what episode of the twilight zone are you on? I work with mostly male politicians... you would be floored if you heard what I do.
  25. I have a Phd in Economics so yes I have. However, the topic was women in politics not debt. What next... you will bring up the chemical composition of vinyl flooring..
