The benefits of colonialism
impartialobserver replied to I am Groot's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
First, lets not kid ourselves. Those who invade/conquer a foreign land are not met with open arms. Second, the colonizer does not go about their business with grace.. they rule with an iron fist. The belief is that the colonizer is superior and so those being colonized should be grateful for being invaded/conquered. Neither is realistic. -

Precise is not the same as accurate. Precise infers that you get to the point with minimal text. Your long-winded posts are not precise or succinct. In our original conversation about Covid... you made a lot of assumptions... filling in the blanks. A rational person inquires when they do not know... not just make assumptions. -
A bit of a let down for TOR in the first game. Lets hope that they play a bit more desperate but still in control next game.

The benefits of colonialism
impartialobserver replied to I am Groot's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Here is a reality that none seem to be wrap their minds around... A people, tribe, nation, etc. will ALWAYS prefer the inferior rule of themselves to the possibly (superior) rule of another. Colonialism may have brought certain nations out of the past and so you would think that these nations would be grateful. The first statement shows why they are not and hence why they fight for independence. -

You illustrate my point... just because I am not 100% aligned with you.. that must mean that I think that you are wrong. I do not see the world in such a black/white, binary view. -
Not sure that we can unring the bell on social assistance programs like unemployment, social security, disability, food stamps, section 8 housing, etc. In a perfect world, we would do away with them and the society involved would deal with the growing pains and/or negative consequences. However, that is not going to happen. Some of it is the politicians who care more about re-election and being revered as heroes/saviors too much to ever vote for something that would destroy their re-election chances.

I do not find your posts to be so precise as much as adamant, opinionated, and full of assumptions. Because I do not echo your sentiments.. from what I have read of your posts.. there is only ONE possibility. I must be adamantly opposed to your viewpoint. There can be no grey area or a spectrum. Only binary. 100% in line with your thoughts or 100% opposed. Precise, in my estimation, means condensing something down to just a few concise, succinct sentences. That being said.. I am not omniscient. Probably a bit too jaded for my own good. I work with politicians and so this idea that one side is moral, upstanding, perfect. etc. and the other are scum of the earth is simply not realistic. My experience is that they are all self serving types that love to be regarded as hero or savior. They want to take credit for things that they most likely had nothing to do with. -

Your very lengthy, adamant posts tell me that you not only care but you care greatly. Lengthy, impassioned posts about a topic also indicate that you think about this quite a bit and not just when you are on here. I am not sure if I believe the Donbas-liberation story but I do not live there, have never been there, and all I rely on is media and outsider perspectives. I think that we have covered the Covid issue enough. No use beating the dead horse for 29th time. -
One aspect to wokeness that I am not so inclined to agree with is discrediting movies/music from the past. Yes, those were created at a time when blacks/browns/women were viewed in a lesser light. However, that does not mean that are not well done in some cases. Just take it with a grain of salt (as the saying goes) that it was made in 1972 or whatever. Societies change.... not going to get it right from the beginning.

You probably watch more cable news in one week than I have in the last 20 years combined. Much like covid.. the war in ukraine does not keep me awake at night. It apparently occupies your mind at all hours. -

I would start that one of my faults is that my "BS detection meter" never really turns off. When I see a story on MSNBC or FOXNEWS.. Immediately, I think, "This is mostly subjective opinions and filling in the blanks". My understanding of the war in Ukraine comes from someone in an another office that is from Belarus. In short, there was a region in the east of Ukraine called Donbas. Apparently, the population is more Russian than Ukrainian. There was civil unrest starting in 2014 as they were pro-Russian and such. The current Ukrainian leader took action against this. From there, Russia took action against them in an effort to help fellow Russians who live in this area (Donbas). Its my understanding that the war in Ukraine is mostly rooted in this conflict. Now, I showed you the courtesy of responding. Do me the same by not responding with a bunch of links. I will not read them. Unlike you, I do not spend hours upon hours watching cable news and searching the internet for news stories. I find that I can get all of the information that I need quickly and without the aid of commentators and their biased view. -
What Song(s) Have Stood the Test of Time for you?

It is bizaare to feel guilty over the actions of those in the past. My direct ancestors as far as I can tell never had slaves. They were peasants who mostly lived in upstate NY and then later on Missouri. What is illogical as well is that when you ask someone if slavery was immoral... their reply is that africans sold fellow africans into slavery. That was not the point. We are talking about the actions of white American land owners who bought slaves and had slaves.

TOR is favored to win this series. the beauty of the NHL is that this does not mean much.
-
I don't know. The beauty of the NHL is that you do not get predictable matchups. It is not like in the NBA where young, upstart really have no chance against GSW, LAL, or PHO. However, Americans have shown that they prefer predictable matchups where the outcome is a foregone conclusion.

It is clear that you want affirmation not information. Anyone with an IQ above 20 knows that anything that I say you will disregard and default to the usual, "liberal democrat, stupid, id__t". So lets end this here and move on. There has to be someone who can fill this void with you.
