Permit costs are pushing $40K in large cities, there's a 5% GST on new homes and more Provincial sales and registration fees, BC has a 3% property transfer tax and even higher on the current values. Short of dropping the GST on new homes, regulating permit and provincial fees, speeding up issuing them and maybe re-introducing the Homesteaders Act, there ain't much Ottawa can do. Tack on that nobody wants to drop greenbelts and agricultural reserves, where is land in already developed area going to come from? There are solutions and like it or not the needed immigration will pressure us to see them and get the political will to DO them.
