  1. Don't know for sure about Trump but anyone who says they're gonna drain the swamp becomes the mortal enemy of that swamp.
  2. I have not read it yet, will try to if I get a chance. But maybe you misunderstood me as well. I'm not so much moralizing about the internet as I am warning that it can be a powerful weapon to be used against us. Off topic anyway, if we continue let us do so in your McLuhan threads.
  3. I think the internet plays an important role as a vehicle of transport for socially subversive ideas. McLuhan's vision of a wonderful information/ communication resource did not take into account the darker side of humanity, let alone geopolitical interests that might use it to reach down to the folk level, IE to catapult their propaganda.
  4. They cannot exist outside of civilization. What we see is complete moral decay as well as intellectual decay, brought about in the guise of being "progressive".
  5. Interesting point because in addition to Christian no doubt making this declaration would not sit well with either Muslim or Jew. Pretty sure this will have to be changed.
  6. I am not taking a stand against the accusations themselves, and you have the right to believe them. I tend to be cautious in "belief" when I hear a story in the news, although such a story is not incredible. Nevertheless my concern is valid, we live in a time where media hype has whipped the public into a mindless frenzy, which is done primarily in the name of selling their product: air time, web site clicks or what have you. And I say this level of media hype is not responsible, it's not responsible journalism. Forgetting the Brown case for the moment, all one needs to do today if you want to harm your opponent is create a story that goes "viral", and they are finished. A different kind of virus. In regards to Brown, I don't know much about him as a person so I cannot say if it's true. It is not my place to say that. Judging the way everyone immediately abandoned him, that is interesting. Perhaps they knew something we don't know. I only hope it is no because of this disturbing trend to react to the latest outrage of the day.
  7. "Severe over-representation" of indigenous children in Canada's child care services.

"Lets not use safety as an excuse to extract children from their culture.” - Carolyn Bennett, Canada's Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs.

Safety is an excuse? Lady, that sounds like you are living in a fantasy land..

Most of them are. There was another one in the paper the other day demanding prisons put an end to solitary confinement. Period. None. She said absolutely nothing about how violent men spending decades in prison with little or no hope of getting out were to be controlled, of course, let alone punished for misdeeds. Not her problem.

No surprise that the Minister responsible for this service is out of touch with reality. Easy for these people to pontificate, but they should leave the real work and hard decisions up to the people on the ground.

My inclination is, the kids need to be removed from the danger or neglect where parents are drug addicts who don't look after them. That needs to be done.

The real problem then is how these kids are cared for, within the system.

  8. Who are these women? Do we know any actual details other than allegations in the media? I guess it doesn't matter anymore these days.
  9. Then would you argue my second point, added just after about property values being affected
  10. My point was already made clearly, they do not maintain access to these boxes to that same level of standard that we are expected to maintain for their own workers. Doesn't matter if its an old person or younger one, that is just the example I gave. Anyone can slip and injure themselves. Your assertion that she should have to move because of the mailbox is unacceptable. She had mail delivery when she bought the home. This also relates to another point I made earlier, home owners could lose property value because of the disparity, some homes still have home delivery, others don't.
  11. Well if it inconvenienced you or our family, you might sing a different tune. Elderly should not be ignored, just as barriers to the handicapped should also be considered. Perhaps you can easily dismiss the needs of elderly or people with mobility/ access issues, yet they too have a voice and a vote, and deserve to have their needs reasonably accommodated. Plus the demographic in Canada has shifted towards the elderly. Many old people in my community. What exactly is the point of having these boxes if they are not accessible? We are informed by Canada Post that we need to keep our walkway and stairs free of ice/ snow so that the postal worker can safely access the mail box. I'm sure you can understand that principle.
  12. The idea that CTV becomes judge makes me uncomfortable. There is no reason to believe media outlets are fair or that their investigation is even valid. They are not professional investigators, and the people they are talking to are not compelled to tell the truth. Again I am not insinuating this story is a lie, it is a question of protecting any person and giving them the right to due process. Today we live in an era where your life can be destroyed by a headline, or sound bite.
  13. Sure men do make advances on women, because they are sexually attracted to them. A man might test her willingness by making suggestive or even lewd comments. I think that's just normal, and if the woman indicates that this attention is not welcome, the man should immediately cease. At that point I do not see any harm done. My point is we need to balance our reaction to these stories in the context of actual harm, if any. The mere act of making sexual advances should not be seen as deserving punishment.
  14. What kind of point exactly are you trying to make?
  15. I barely know any of the names on that list, to be honest. So I went with the one name that was familiar. And even though this might be biased, I think it would be good to have a strong woman run against the Evil Liberal Queen.
  16. Regardless of numbers, the principle is there- the media is a potentially dangerous weapon. One should also consider that these trends eventually come down to the level of common everyday people. Our young folks are being raised in this hysterical environment.
  17. Another angle to this comes to mind that might not have been pointed out- now that we have neighbourhoods with door to door, and some without, it could well affect the housing prices. For a house in a neighbourhood which has door to door, this is a plus. For the others.. oh well. Sunny ways
  18. I hated the idea from day one. The issue today however, is broken promises.
  19. The timing of this is highly suspicious, especially given that the alleged incidents happened many years ago. Not that I necessarily doubt the story, but for now that is just what it is... a story. What I find concerning is how the media takes hold of stories like these and makes them go "viral". At that point it doesn't matter if you're actually guilty of something- your life is over as you know it. You are a dead man walking. In the past there was always some effort to show restraint when someone was accused in the name of responsible journalism. Today the emphasis is on making lots of money by running a profitable media company, and the more sensational a story is, the more viewership and associated sponsor money comes in. It is now to the point that anyone can be destroyed just by mere accusation.
  20. She drives to the grocery store. She can walk, she's not an invalid. She shovels her steps, and a kind neighbour clears her driveway with a snow blower. She's scared of ice of course, so she salts her steps etc. So she can do that, but as I said, lots of ice at the community mail boxes and sometimes the snowplow plows it in as it goes by. Then no one bothers to clear that spot. Keep in mind, when you're old you don't want to risk falling and breaking them bones. Sunny ways are all fine and well for young people, but I doubt Mr. Trudeau can relate to the plight of the elderly, especially those who are not as privileged as he is. Someone who has never wanted or gone without something they need cannot grasp that concept. Why can't she just ask her butler to pick up the mail?
  21. Already been done. Much charity money, food and skilled labour has been provided to the people of Haiti, to no avail. Paying achieves nothing. It's like giving an alcoholic another bottle.
