  1. More research was done by Seattle scientists over 15 years. The team first measured acidity along the 2,800-mile sweep of ocean between Oahu and Kodiak in 1991. They returned in 2006 aboard the University of Washington research vessel Thomas G. Thompson, working around the clock in shifts to collect and analyze nearly 1,500 water samples over two months. "The fact that we saw this very significant change over the last 15 years is a reminder of how mankind is affecting the oceans at an ever-increasing rate," Feely said. "The result can be an environment where shells dissolve, destroying plankton, marine snails and other small creatures that sustain the rest of the marine food web. Acidified water also can kill fish eggs and larvae." What does it matter why ph levels have changed (ie factories, human impact). The fact is that they are changing drastically and may be affecting the environment for shell fish and other species to thrive.
  2. You obviously didn't read the links that were provided for you. I will help you out here with other stats: Mr. Perreault routinely monitors the ocean for food abundance, temperature and salinity – but thinks he should test the pH level too, to keep track of how acidic the water is. The Vancouver Aquarium has been doing just that – and its records show the pH level in Vancouver’s harbour steadily declining, from 8.1 (1954-74) to a low of 7.3 by 2001. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has noted a direct correlation between rising levels of C02 in the atmosphere and levels in the ocean. As more C02 accumulates in the Pacific, the pH decreases and the acidic level rises. Sophia Johannessen, a research scientist with the federal Institute of Ocean Sciences in Nanaimo, said it is clear oceans are becoming more acidic. Guy Dean, vice-president and chief sustainability officer at Albion Fisheries Ltd., one of BC’s biggest suppliers of fresh seafood, said the scallop die-off has rung alarm bells. There is still a supply of B.C. oysters, but local scallops are a rarity now. “It’s definitely a sign. It’s like the canary in the coal mine,” he said. “That is the early indicator of climate change and how it is going to affect the availability of various products.” : Read the full article here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/mystery-surrounds-massive-die-off-of-oysters-and-scallops-off-bc-coast/article17156108/ Certainly much more research needs to be done in this area to conclude that PH levels are the root cause of the decline of oysters and scallops off the BC coast but to assume that "changes in average pH are smaller than the normal seasonal variations" is absurd.
  3. My point is that if Quebec wants to enforce marketing materials for businesses to be in english and french regardless of the media format, why is that a bother to Canadians. They already have this law on the books, they are just extending it to digital. Why the uproar?
  4. Ooohhh, that's very profound. And this adds to the discussion by.......?
  5. Why do you care what Quebec does to protect their heritage. Seriously, does it impact your personal lifestyle that much?
  6. What, no caricature of Celine Dion! She is a current event in Vegas, I think she belongs on this float.
  7. Are there certain married women who are a certain 'kind of people'. I didn't know that. If a woman or man does not want to have sex with their partner and the partner coerces them, isn't that a form of rape? They said 'No'. No means no, regardless of the relationship between the two parties.
  8. I am assuming this is your perception of female social activists. Talk about stereotyping! You need to get out there and meet more women!
  9. When you consider how much companies use FB to promote their goods and services, build customer relationships etc. you can understand why the govt thinks their should be a french version. FB is used as a marketing tool and currently printed marketing material needs to be in french. The Quebec govt needs to address digital media and put out clear guidelines to avoid confusion.
  10. They are trying to protect their culture and heritage. I see nothing wrong with that. If they don't do it, no one else will.
  11. Maybe we should reward our athletes like Russia does: Russian medalists at the recently concluded Sochi Winter Olympics are being rewarded quite handsomely for their service to the Motherland. In addition to the $120,000 being handed out for each gold medal, the $76,000 being awarded for slivers and $52,000 given to bronze winners, now word has come out that each of Russia's medalists will be gifted a new Mercedes-Benz. http://www.autoblog.com/2014/02/27/russia-gives-olympic-medalists-new-mercedes-benz/ How is that for motivation!
  12. As if Arizona being better than Russia or the Muslim world or Uganda were some great standard to achieve. -k No standard at all, In fact, I think I will cancel my spring break baseball holiday.
  13. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/02/27/now-that-arizonas-bill-is-dead-what-states-are-still-considering-similar-legislation/ This article discusses other states that are considering this bill.
  14. She was a great child star and I loved all her movies. I don't think any fan of Shirley Temple's cares whether she was a republican or not. I didn't bring that up. August did.
  15. The American Atheists group were supposed to have a booth at the Conservative Political Action Conference, however they made a comment "The Christian right should be threatened by us.” and they were banned from the conference. I guess the christian right really did feel threatened. http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/washington-whispers/2014/02/25/big-mouth-gets-atheists-booted-from-cpac-booth
  16. It's probably appropriate to also point out that republican child stars Candace Cameron offered a “Bible-based” opinion that women should submit to their stronger, more logical, and downright superior husbands and cater to their every demand meekly and unquestioningly. Her brother Kirk, (also a republican child star, felt that gay weddings at the 2014 Grammy Awards show were an "assault on the traditional family“ despite the continued existence of same-sex couples with children,
  17. Looks like the Quebec government needs to look at social media and how it relates to advertising business re: brochures, marketing etc. This is a grey area and I think the gov't needs to set out guidelines. What about twitter? Should posts in twitter be in french and english?
  18. And let's not forget he is the mayor of the largest city in Canada. If I lived in Toronto my expectations of the mayor would include not participating in illegal drugs, especially crack, cavorting with criminals and not showing up for work in the morning because of hangovers.
  19. But there is also good news with other states. Ohio, Tennessee, South Dakota and Georgia have all "for now" decided not to pursue the "religious rights bill" in their states. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/02/27/now-that-arizonas-bill-is-dead-what-states-are-still-considering-similar-legislation/
  20. Surely he has been truthful on some things! And let's not forget that spontaneity is part of Trudeau’s brand, and his popular appeal. He’s a fresh face, running as a fresh voice, seeking to sweep away the politics of “secrecy and control". I am looking forward to a fresh voice leading our country. And I am not some 'shallow' woman as a poster once suggested here for every woman who supports Trudeau. That's just a ridiculous comment and has no credibility.
