Gun control is a hot issue on both sides of the border. I would not want to eliminate those border checks for Americans who are in possession of guns crossing into Canada.

I believe I only called you the derogatory name and I didn't say "old white men". Read back to the threads. And you certainly haven't made a great first impression. And you only had one chance.

This is a pathetic forum. It seems like Bush_cheney is driving all the topics here. Don't you guys see that? He is forever in everyone single thread and everyone is responding to him. And most of it catering to his BS. I feel like responding in some intelligent way to some of the topics here but I know that it will be degraded to his level so I don't bother. But, I do think that if given the chance, I could offer plenty of intelligent feedback to some of these topics but I would rather not if I have to deal with the likes of folks like bush and others. I have found members here absolutely delightful, like Jaycee, Waldo, Kimmy, On Guard, Bubber, (whoops, I hope I got that right, you have great oneliners!), but I have to say that I find the quality here is lacking.

Arizona's latest crazy antic is to pass a bill by a 33-27 vote that would allow business owners, as long as they assert their religious beliefs, to deny service to gay and lesbian customers. It now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican and onetime small business owner who vetoed similar legislation last year but has expressed the right of business owners to deny service. As far as I can tell, if you are of the LGBT community, of Mexican descent or even a pregnant unwed woman, you better not move to Arizona. And if I were a business owner thinking of locating to Arizona, I'd run the other way.

I listened to the game on cbc radio while working. Not the same as watching on tv. But I just might get up to watch the 4 am game on Sunday. Should be a great game. Any players on the swedish team that are in the nhl?

US Government Induced Drought
WestCoastRunner replied to Shady's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Just to add one more note to the above: They discovered that a male black bear male mated with at least five different females and fathered at least 11 offspring while crossing back and forth. And I bet he didn't pay cub support! -

There are also overpasses that the animals use. The have been monitoring these for a while and have finally determined that indeed the grizzlies and black bears are using the passages to find their mates. They were concerned that inbreeding would result but finally they are looking for love on the other side, although it took about 5 years for them to get used to them. -
The interesting thing about the Latvian goalie, he is on the farm team for Tampa Bay. Yzerman is the GM for Tampa Bay. I bet Yzerman was cursing and rejoicing all at the same time.

Northern Gateway Pipeline Lawsuit
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well, I think I'm pretty special. But to re-iterate my main opposition to the pipeline is that BC does not have the ability to manage oil spills. As I mentioned in a prior post: "Ottawa’s decision to deal with coastal oil spills from a base in Quebec would make it much harder to contain spills, and Transport Canada and the Coast Guard lack the needed “environmental expertise” to manage them, officials said in the documents obtained by The Canadian Press under freedom of information laws." The east coast is better equipped to handle these types of tankers and oil spills if they do occur. There is also less risk of oil spills (we are in a highly volatile earthquake zone and the pipeline would traverse the mountain ranges. And I am quoting here (I posted the link above if anyone cared to read it before attacking my stance): "The weather conditions and the remoteness of the pipeline’s route in B.C. could cause cleanup delays, leading to broader water, land and wildlife contamination. Sensitive habitats, local economies (fisheries and tourism, for example) and First Nations along the route could be affected.” -

I think they would have another fight on their hands if deciding to go east. It would again be a disaster if oil leaked into the lakes and river system in Ontario and Quebec. But I too think heading east may be a feasible option. An advantage of going east is that they have already resolved the issues of tanker traffic and the politics will certainly be easier to go east (There is the Irving oil refinery and they can ship through the Panama Canal to Asia). There is actually even talk of moving the oil through the port at Churchill, Man. -

I believe you are right. Just too many obstacles for them to overcome. And we are ultimately responsible for what we leave behind to future generations. -

No one can absolutely guarantee that tankers regardless of their engineering and construction will not leak oil into our beautiful sea which is habitat for whales, dolphins, sea lions, etc. And Waldo is absolutely right in asking your personal risk factor? Do you live on the west coast? Have you thought about the implications of a massive oil spill. The impact of an oil spill far outweigh any economic benefit that may arise by building this pipeline and transporting through the shipping lanes. -

Oil spills have a huge relevance. Are you kiddiing me? The briefing book estimates that at a rate of 500,000 barrels of crude oil a day, a pipeline spill lasting an hour could lead to 21,000 barrels spilling into B.C.’s wilderness. And here is an article for you on why BC is so concerned " Ottawa’s decision to deal with coastal oil spills from a base in Quebec would make it much harder to contain spills, and Transport Canada and the Coast Guard lack the needed “environmental expertise” to manage them, officials said in the documents obtained by The Canadian Press under freedom of information laws." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/bc-worries-oil-spill-would-overwhelm-resources/article13944672/ -

This number is based on research done from other oil spills and the cost incurred based on the cost per barrel of oil that was spilled. -

That looks very interesting! I'll squeeze in some time to watch it. Thanks Waldo.
