  1. According to The Mariners Group, there were 3.2 major oil spills per year over the last 37 years worldwide. However, over the last ten years, that number has climbed to 8.6 major oil spills per year, and in the last five years, soared to 14.8 major oil spills each year. If those stats aren't frightening enough, the west coast is in an earthquake zone. Even a small quake could cause a tanker going aground or a massive leak. The channels and inlets in and around the Vancouver harbour are extremely difficult for large tankers to maneouver.through with shallow waters and narrow channels. There is even talk of dredging some of these channels so even larger tankers can pass through. It is estimated that the financial damage caused by a potential large-scale oil spill in the Burrard Inlet could cost approximately $40 billion. That $40 billion includes clean-up costs, resident evacuations, tourism loss, losses to the BC fishing industry, health costs and port losses in annual wages and salaries. But of course, the cost of an oil spill to our natural ecosystems is incalculable.
  2. The problem with this statment is that new members don't know who is a troll and who isn't. By the time the new member has figured it out, that troll has poisoned the experience for the new member. We can get past these trolling incidents eventually but this forum runs the risk that new members will have decided not to bother. Another problem with trolling is that other easily influenced members pick up on it and mimic this behaviour because it is allowed.
  3. The decision from the federal government to approve (or not) the Northern Gateway Pipeline is expected in July of this year. Ecojustice lawyers representing ForestEthics Advocacy, the Living Oceans Society and the Raincoast Conservation Foundation allege the Joint Review Panel's 419-page report contains legal errors and that its approval is based on insufficient evidence. Here is the link to the full story: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/northern-gateway-pipeline-report-draws-lawsuit-1.2501051 Among their concerns (and many other folks who call B.C. our home) are: Missing information about the risk of geohazards along the pipeline route and what happens to diluted bitumen when it is spilled in the marine environment.Panel did not consider federal recovery strategy for Pacific humpback whales, whose critical habitat overlaps with the proposed tanker route, or identify mitigation measures for caribou populations.refused to consider the environmental impacts of upstream oilsands development and permits Enbridge to assess landslide risks during instead of before construction. When (not if) an oil spill occurs it will be disastrous for British Columbia and Canada. Think of the tourist dollars that would be lost, fishing industry etc. What are your thoughts?
  4. Hopefully, demand in the u.s. for oil from Canada will continue to drop and China's economy will continue to go sideways, then we won't have as much oil being transported through our beautiful west coast.
  5. Rue, I usually don't read your posts, They are just too long. If you could shorten them up and state what you want to express succinctly, they might just get read more often. And I don't have a short attention span and I'm quite sure Jaycee doesn't either judging by her posts.
  6. If it's approved, (decision is expected in July), it sounds like a refinery may be built in Kitimat, then the oil will be sent out in tankers through our pristine waters. A sad day for British Columbia.
  7. That's the beauty of universal health care. Everyone is covered for whatever ails them. No need to worry about what coverage you will need or when. Sooner or later, universal health care will take the place of obamacare.
  8. That is exactly my point Bush. You like to goad people with your repetitive comments that annoy people to the point that they (me) end up calling you an ******. My suggestion for this thread is for members to try and be a bit more respectful (including me) and not state their points so many times.
  9. Bush_cheney, you have said the cbc is "state financed and controlled media" 18 times in the Fox News thread. You are obviously stating that to get a rise out of folks. I think everyone got your point the first 5 times you stated it! Now I've gone off topic in this thread. Sorry.
  10. I agree with Bryan. Conversations will inevitably go off in another direction and I personally don't see what is wrong with that. Inevitably, they do come back to the topic at hand and branching out into other areas just makes for a more lively conversation. I do think that warning points for something so silly is not really conducive to an engaging and informative forum.
  11. Gay rights is not a trendy cause for those who are fighting for their human rights including the right to marry, anti-discrimination laws, anti-bullying of young people. It also isn't so simplified, not sure what you meant by that. By using the term 'trendy', it diminishes the hard work and the emotional toll that fighting for these rights takes on someone.
  12. Those girls will one day become mothers and there is also a clear correlation between educated mothers and reduced infant deaths.
  13. According to the World Health Organization, a child's risk of dying is highest in the first 28 days of life (44%). Safe childbirth and effective neonatal care are essential to prevent these deaths. If we can reach these countries where this occurs and provide these necessities, it would go a long way to reduce the number of infant deaths.
  14. Not sure why Fox news channel would be so welcoming in other countries? They are perhaps being led down the garden path.
  15. I don't get your angle bush. However, I cringe to try and understand it and I cringe to figure out why you are here on this board? Do you like canadians? Do you have a hidden agenda? I get that I am new but I don't see a positive benefit for you being here and if I am being outspoken, so be it. I will withdraw my membership
  16. Bush, we don't live in isolation with the eskimos? Are you kidding me?
  17. You are an idiot bush. You truly have no clue about CBC. If you did, you wouldn't harp on our beliefs. I have no use in arguing with you on this.
  18. Absolutely not. They should have every choice that we have. I do not worry what americans have access to. i worry what canadians living in america have access to. I don't care of the ratings for fox, but i would like to see equal opportunity for viewing of all broadcasts. Bush, why is it important to reward with the highest ratings. I love indie films. Think about it.
  19. Thank you. CBC is held in high esteem in my circles.
