Boeing 777 Disappears Near Vietnam

Going on 5 days. Is Malaysia hiding anything or just incompetent? And why did it take the Chinese to come up with satellite images? -
Quebec General Election 2014
WestCoastRunner replied to August1991's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Holy mackerel??? That's funny. My grandparents came to Canada from France. I too have extended family in Quebec who do not speak a word of english. What I don't get is what gives you permission to frivolously throw terms out like 'blockhead'. I just don't get it. How does that move forward your logic and how does it seek to drawn in intellectual conversation? -
Fukushima radiation found in BC
WestCoastRunner replied to The_Squid's topic in Health, Science and Technology
There is something that citizens of BC can do to help monitor Fukushima radiation on the B.C. Coast. Thanks to the great opportunities that crowdsourcing is providing (we don't need to look any further than the airline disaster off Malaysia), citizens of BC can now help in this research: "Scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Mass., are calling on the public to collect data from B.C.'s oceans for a crowd-funded research project. The website ourradioactiveocean.org is recruiting "citizen scientists," ordinary people who can raise $600 for a home testing kit and then take water samples to return to Woods Hole for analysis." Here is more info on the project: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/fukushima-radiation-on-b-c-coast-measured-by-crowdsourcing-1.2552906 -

It may not have been worth it to us and I fear for the women and children in Afghanistan now that we and other countries have left. -
Quebec General Election 2014
WestCoastRunner replied to August1991's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I can't really see how these fighting words can help an honest and open dialogue on separatism. Who does it benefit and how does it move the conversation forward in an intelligent manner? Now, I understand this is a very small forum but it is representative of many Canadians that do not live in Quebec and it certainly has an undercurrent of racism. -
Quebec General Election 2014

Does anyone remember Godwin's Law: "Godwin’s Law is an internet adage that is derived from one of the earliest bits of Usenet wisdoms, which goes “if you mention Adolf Hitler or Nazis within a discussion thread, you’ve automatically ended whatever discussion you were taking part in.” By 2007, The Economist had declared that “a good rule in most discussions is that the first person to call the other a Nazi automatically loses the argument.” -

Fukushima radiation found in BC
WestCoastRunner replied to The_Squid's topic in Health, Science and Technology
This is an article dating back to 2011. Squid's article was just published today and is more up to date. It is very disconcerting to read that article in the Vancouver Sun. Here are some points from the article: A radioactive metal from the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in Japan has been discovered in the Fraser Valley, causing researchers to raise the alarm about the long-term impact of radiation on B.C.’s west coast. Examination of a soil sample from Kilby Provincial Park, near Agassiz, has for the first time in this province found Cesium 134, further evidence of Fukushima radioactivity being transported to Canada by air and water. “That was a surprise,” said Juan Jose Alava, an adjunct professor in the school of resource and environmental management at Simon Fraser University, in an interview on Tuesday. “It means there are still emissions ... and trans-Pacific air pollution. It’s a concern to us. This is an international issue.” -
Pariah Russia Paralympic Participation
WestCoastRunner replied to Big Guy's topic in The Rest of the World
In the years leading up to the olympics in Sochi, Russia has actually improved the rights of the disabled. They still have a long way to go but these olympics I think have put in motion iimprovements for the disabled and raised awareness in Russia. " Last year, a new education law came into effect that gave children the right to study at mainstream schools. At that time, about two-fifths of the approximately 450,000 school-age children with disabilities in Russia attended regular schools. Almost an equal number were deemed "uneducable," while more than one in 10 attended special needs schools far from home. “Now teachers and parents and others, they understand what inclusive education means because five years ago, they didn’t even know… how to include children with disabilities," says Simonova." http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/sochi-paralympics-confronts-russia-s-attitude-towards-disabled-1.2558404 -
I really hate this phrase. It is condescending and insulting. Do you honestly think that people following a thread are not intelligent enough to keep up. Choose your words carefully.

Mayor Ford calls 911 on CBC comedians
WestCoastRunner replied to Shwa's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Regardless if one calls themselves a leftist, I don't think Rob Ford's issues has anything to do with politics. The guy clearly needs help. What good would it do to throw him in jail. He needs help as was quoted above. Two wrongs don't make a right. -
A report funded by a grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency studied the impact of the completion of three new major economic projects that could increase the risk of tanker accidents off the west coast. It states an increase of 18 percent and the risk of oil out flow by 68 percent. The large gap here refers to the large volume of oil that would be transported that comes from the Trans mountain pipeline. The 3 projects the report refers to are: The Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline, the Gateway Pacific Terminal at Cherry Point in Washington and the expansion of the Deltaport container terminal, located in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. As I have stated, IMHO, with those percentage risks, it doesn't make sense to BC and Canada to increase oil tanker traffic. Here is the article. Links to the report can be found in the article. http://www.vancouverobserver.com/news/new-study-finds-three-new-major-projects-would-significantly-increase-risk-oil-spills-coast

Pariah Russia Paralympic Participation
WestCoastRunner replied to Big Guy's topic in The Rest of the World
Because each and every athlete deserves to be there. It has nothing to do with politics. -
There are also risks around the gulf islands and the Juan de Fuca Strait. And with larger tankers and a higher volume of tankers, the risk increases significantly. A Pacific States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force reported that tankers may hole up in the gulf islands during a storm. In 2009, a bulk carrier dragged anchor in high winds and was blown onto a rocky reef near Mayne Island. No oil was spilled but the risk was very high. There is also a serious risk of collision at the western entrance to the Juan de Fuca Strait where ships converge in a narrower channel and local pilots are not required. This puts the Swiftsure Bank at great risk and would be disastrous to this area rich in sea life. While there will be more safety measures put it place, again, the risks far outweigh the benefits to BC. I would suggest that anyone who has not sailed around the BC coast and the gulf islands do so before they put their support behind these pipelines.

You should read the link you provided. That route is going east from Alberta. It won't be going through BC.

That is a bit presumptuous of you to assume no one cares about track and field whether it is in Canada or elsewhere. Let those of us who enjoy track and field and running as a sport revel in this sensationalized trial. We don't need you judging our voyeurism. -
Why would we want to sacrifice British Columbia and the west coast (and pretty much BC's economy) just to ship bitumen to Communist China.

Northern Gateway Pipeline Lawsuit
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I know that Waldo mentioned this in another thread, but it deserves to be in this thread as well. Now that Jim Prentice is involved with talks with First Nations, can he overcome their concerns: Art Sterritt, the executive director of Coastal First Nations in B.C., met the announcement with a high-degree of skepticism, telling CBC News that enlisting Prentice to renew efforts to consult First Nations is "too little, too late" . Unless Prentice can show up with some new technology or a process to assure First Nations that pipelines are safe, that there is a way to clean up the mess when it happens, then there is really no sense in entering into this conversation," Sterritt said. Prentice has made the point that big projects, such as the Northern Gateway pipeline, are dead in the water without real efforts to involve First Nations. "There will be no oil pipelines to the West Coast without economic partnerships with First Nations," Prentice said during a speech to the Manning Networking Conference in Ottawa last week. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/enbridge-taps-jim-prentice-to-rescue-northern-gateway-first-nations-talks-1.2560859 There is no guarantee the gateway pipeline will be built as someone mentioned earlier in this thread. -
You didn't get what I was referring to. I agree this is an important and critical issue. I was referring to Tim's subtle attempt to pit grain farmers against environmentalists.

I was referring to Tim's reference to grain farmers and idiotic enviromentalists and how he subtedly pitted one against the other.
