Originally, we had no clear idea at all. This virus has only been studied for a few months. Any estimates on mortality rates so far are just that. We knew that the mortality rates would fall as testing got going. Let’s hope we get through this relatively unscathed and better prepared for the big one that’s coming.2 points

This topic is to discuss where did the western intelligence agencies failed in regards to the coronavirus pandemic ? Nancy Pelosi said "Come to China Town" and Donald Trump said "It is a democrat hoax". In 1 week both of them were talking about how to shut down the country. Do you blame the coronavirus spread on the western intelligence services ?1 point

Bill Maher right again, this time about panic porn err the mainstream media. “Giving a proper perspective isn’t a cover up of the truth. It is the truth”1 point

For your edification: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/types.html That's from the CDC. I'm not a virologist or epidemiologist. I don't know why they chose the name Covid for this one and left the other ones in the family with coronavirus, but KC sn't in left field for saying this isn't the first go-round with coronavirus. She just got the name wrong. If we hold Dems to the same standard this thread would be 1,000 pages long. AOC's thread would be 500 pages alone.1 point

On a positive note, we have the federal political parties and all of the provincial governments working as a team. When a disagreement arises, they resolve it. Political rivalries are set aside. This is unprecedented. Even during the Great War and the Second World War, we did not have this kind of national unity. This is not the achievement of one politician. It is the achievement of all of them, regardless of political stripe. We all owe them our thanks for stepping up when it was needed.1 point

Hopefully at one small phase at a time with up to 18 months to implement the rest. We only have one grocery store here so figure it out yourself.1 point

Things are going to reopened in phases starting in a few weeks regardless of what some in this forum may feel. You can’t destroy society to save it. Especially from something that has a .5 to 1.5% mortality rate at best It’s completely irrational.1 point

That isn't exactly a big secret. We can see that, and have seen that from the start, in Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. But all of that requires resources we lack, from labs (and the chemicals needed to run more tests) to the tests themselves, to the strict tracing of those who are found to have the virus, to the hospital PPE gear and to such basics as masks and hand sanitizers for the public.1 point

No he never said that. He said repeatedly, early detection and containment of those with the virus will make quarantine not as extensive neededcas it's now being used. He has said if quarantine is used as the only method of containment it will cause severe economic damage which will kill more than it claims to save.1 point

Debate is more successful if all the debaters have some grasp of logic. Religious people rarely do, as their entire goal is to protect God and that requires a great deal of illogical and sometimes even delusional thinking.1 point

How is he "just", exactly? Killing innocent people is never just, yet God encouraged the killing of innocents throughout the OT. Even if he's not actively encouraging it, he allows it all the time - as demonstrated by certain elements of Islam today. If God was just, he'd punish the evildoers and not allow his own innocent people to suffer as proof of their 'faith'. Clearly, God is either extremely unjust, or he is too weak and ineffectual to protect those who worship him, and so must pretend that these things are a 'test of faith'. Nobody victim-blames like God!1 point

No wonder the situation in NYC is especially bad. NYC is easily the most global city in the world with an extremely high density of population coupled with a lot of high-ranking people who keep on travelling all across the world meeting countless people in countless large mass-gatherings, shaking countless hands. On top of that there are certain demographics who have a more relaxed attitude towards recommendations of social distancing. In fact, they couldn't care less about such recommendations.1 point

What does it matter. We're rotting from the inside anyways. During WWII, Canada set up internment camps for Canadians of Japanese, German, Austrian, and Italian origin, for those considered a possible national security threat. Of course, you only hear about the Japanese camps, and we apologized and gave the families 300 million in compensation. IT WAS AN EXISTENTIAL TOTAL WAR. Now we hesitate to ban travel to China "cuz ma feelings". All of the intelligence in the world doesn't mean jack when the decision-makers dither and roll over on their backs. The other thing we have to hope for is that this virus will evoke immunity lasting a significant amount of time, perhaps years, like its relative which caused SARS did.1 point

As long as we're comparing the two does anyone have any evidence whatsoever of swarms of influenza cases swamping ER rooms year after year the way COVID cases have this year?1 point

Intelligence services have not prioritized emerging health threats - it's down the list of what they do. Likewise WHO is involved in a multitude of projects and, in addition, depends on the goodwill and co-operation of sovereign governments.1 point

The OP title doesn't say the virus came from the Wuhan lab, it says it is suspect. And the lab is a key suspect here for the origin of the virus whether you admit it or not. Trudeau gov sent 830k for research going on in that lab. High probability that the team of Canadians in that lab are also made up of mostly former Chinese nationals. Are these people on the up-and-up? Only a fool would give that money to them at this time. China certainly doesn't need any money for any research either. Canada loves to bend over and let others give it to them up the rump. Like open your eyes Liberals FFS.1 point

They deny that climate change is man made. Of course the climate is always changing but humans have a huge impact on that. They've also provided 0 information on their "plan" or the direction they intend to take. Most of them have a very poor understanding of what climate change is. I'll break it down: The earth receives energy from the sun through the form of electromagnetic radiation Some of the radiation from the sun is blocked by the earth's magnetic field and composition of the atmosphere (ozone for UV rays, etc) A large portion of the energy that makes it through is visible light and infrared. Certain chemicals in the earth's atmosphere, like oxygen and nitrogen, known as linear molecules, are very stable and do not react with the incoming radiation (unless for high energy such as UV) Non-linear chemicals, which have many vibrational modes, such as carbon dioxide, water (vapour), and other organic molecules, absorb the infrared radiation and keep it within the earth's atmosphere. These chemicals are known as "green house gases" The temperature within a system is dependent on the amount of energy in it. More energy, the higher the temperature The energy in earth's atmosphere is an equation which amounts to => temperature = energy received by sun + energy already in atmosphere - energy leaving the atmosphere The amount of energy retained within the atmosphere is dependent on the amount of carbon dioxide, water vapour, and other organic chemicals, since they retain infrared energy instead of allowing it to leave in to space. Thus, the more carbon dioxide, water vapour, and other organic chemicals, the higher the absorption and retention rate of solar energy The increased energy retention within the atmosphere causes an increase in temperature Humans began using coal for power around 1700. The human population then was 710 million. Only a select few were using coal back then. It's 2020. Europe alone has a population approaching 800 million. How much coal, other forms of fossil fuels, and natural gas is used to provide those 800 million europeans electricity, vehicles, consumer goods, and a trove of other modern comforts and necessities? The current human population is 7.7 billion people. So over the past 320 years, we've not only grown the human population from 710 million to 7.7 billion but we've also heavily industrialized our societies. Countries like China are rapidly industrializing. The amount of carbon dioxide, water vapour, and other green house gases being emitted on a daily basis have reached astronomical numbers. Think of the compounding effects. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molecular_vibration https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absorption_spectroscopy#Absorption_spectrum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absorption_band https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiative_forcing1 point

He was talking to heterosexuals who wanted to get rid of their older wives, so he framed his answer for them. If he was talking to homosexuals, he would have framed his answer for them. The fact is - Jesus said nothing about homosexuality. So his followers should not, either. This is how people start coming up with nonsense rules and harmful religious regulations - they start reading more into Bible verses and begin going beyond what Jesus said.1 point

You must be devout student of the Bible. Which part of the 'made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife...........So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate' did you not understand? Keep that in mind next time we talk about the Quran.1 point
