I give Doug Ford credit for choosing leadership over partisanship. He's doing "the people" a solid, at expense of businesses. And ... takeout delivery lcbo are solid. Thx Doug! https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/covid-19-coronavirus-ontario-monday-1.55064452 points

I would not say an outright ban, but I would definitely be one hell of a lot more discerning about who we take, cut the numbers down heavily, and do a lot more background checks (currently we do none) on these people to see just how closely affiliated they have been with the Chinese government and its security infrastructure.2 points

China is a very big place (1/4 of the whole world) and just as with every other immigrant candidate, we should simply be selective of WHO is coming in, not where they are from.2 points

Different reporting. The mortality rate is pretty much the same with reported cases everywhere. The US has far more reporting which also lowers the rate making it more accurate. Anyways blaming Trumpnis as stupid as blaming Trudeau. Neither is in charge. They are just mouth pieces.1 point

At this point I wouldn't ban all Chinese immigration, that's why I said no. But we should be very aware of the security risks that a minority of them pose and of the bad intents of the Chinese government, and do our due diligence. That said, I have zero loyalty or duty to any potential immigrants. My concern is Canada. If the above issues can't be secured I would consider banning all Chinese migrants until the Chinese stop stealing from us, but that's a pretty serious thing to do and i'm not at that point yet. Canada certainly hasn't done enough on its end to try and stop it. Trudeau is far more worried about his reputation among left-leaning peers in Canada and internationally than he is about the security of Canada. When you're more worried about impressing your peers rather than doing what's right then you've turned your back on the country for your own ego. The man doesn't know anything about Canadian history other than what his father spun on him, so why should he care anyways.1 point

Did you hear about the returning snow birds? Ford was talking about this today. They go straight to grocery stores instead of self-isolation!1 point

Given the f*cknut peanut gallery can't seem to relate to a leader unless they are fat, white, male and stupid we could only imagine how hysterical they would be if Wynne were still premier through this.1 point

Amazingly, the Star, myself and my lefty pinko brother also don't think he is shitting the bed on this. Really all he has to do is learn to listen to advisors who are expert in this, and ask questions. Trump never got the hang of this very basic skill and Ford seems to have. I am grateful.1 point

That makes no sense. You can stop or account for population density. It’s just a reality, in which a virus can spread faster.1 point
-
Sounds like all you're saying is that Trump failed to take America's larger size into account. If the size of a nation and its population is such an important factor that directly accelerates this virus' spreads there should be scholarly articles written on the topic that indicate where how and why this occurs. Do you have anything like that or perhaps you're writing one up and presenting it for peer review. Personally I'll be looking for peer reviewed articles in the future that correlate how concerns over partisan issues like China's governments disdain for the seriousness of this virus translated into spreading it farther and faster for example.1 point

This will work well with a modified South Korea approach I think you will see incorporated soon.1 point

I get that he downplayed it initially, but he still acted sooner than Trudeau. That’s a fact. As for testing, the American government now has tests that provide results in 45 minutes, which they plan to also distribute to Europe and other hot spots.1 point

Hang on Wes, I actually agree with much of what you just said..you know me..you know me better than most which is why you said the nazi reference but in a way I get thanks...I am just saying we all in this matter have subjective opinions on how to handle it..how much Trudeau and Trump really do...they are mouthpieces...its the bureaucracy around them calling the shots..seriously I liked yer last post but it is our opinions...1 point

Hardly stupid at all to make an unbiased observation. That's how we learn about others, and how problems actually get solved. And just because I make an observation does not mean I condone it, or communism as a whole. Information is what it is. The larger point made by me is that they won't be overthrowing their beloved government soon, whether we believe their love is sincere or not is irrelevant.1 point

Trudeau failed. He should have been a lot quicker on decisions and this not taking a test and staying with the wife is a joke. He needs to do what all people want and call this a national problem and put all resources to work. The child tax credit will do nothing.1 point

Can you illustrate the correlation between the low infection rate and the Deputy PM? I personally think that I haven’t caught the virus because of a special rock I’m holding in my hand? Prove me wrong! Well, considering the United States has ten times the population, with a much greater population density, and hundreds of international airports, compared to like 5 in Canada, it’s going to be a bigger problem for them. Regardless, Trump has done more sooner than our junior varsity PM or his deputy dog sidekick.1 point

I think people's lives are more important than the economy too, or Trump's re-election. I simply disagree with the premise that not shutting down the economy means I put the economy or Trump's re-election ahead of people's lives, quite the opposite. I also disagree with the premise that the best way to save lives is to shut down the economy, that is in fact the worst way to do it and will result in net loss of life, womp womp. By ignoring the economic impacts of your policy proposals and miscalculating the health impacts, you advocate for a "cure" that is worse than the disease, while barely effecting the disease. Despite your good intentions, you are paving the road to hell and you aren't saving lives while you do it either. Not great, Bob.1 point

The deputy PM is doing a fine job? How so? Oh, so now you’re ok with behind the scenes government huh. Sheesh. You’re bending yourself in a pretzel to defend Trudeau. It’s quite entertaining!1 point

On the mask thing: makes essentially no difference at all for inhalation exposure. I looked it up this afternoon and the Wuhan Covid virus is about 100 nanometers in diameter (0.1 microns). That is 1/3 of the size of the 0.3 microns that an 95 mask will block 95% of the time. You would need ultrafiltration cartridges and a rubber sealed and tested mask to be anywhere near blocking it for inhalation. What they CAN do is catch droplets aerosolized by a cough or sneeze (and, of course the droplets carry the virus.). I do a lot of confined space entries with hazmat conditions, and have a son-in-law who is a firefighter, so, yes, a fair bit of experience with masks. AND - after doing that kind of crap for 50 years, I am still alive.1 point

COVID-19 is now a computer virus as well. Given that almost every link in the world right now is about the COVID-19 virus, that makes it easy to hide a computer virus within that massive stream of information. Simply name the computer virus the same name as the real virus, and it mimics the infection by piggy-backing on the other's information. As such, we cannot protect ourselves from the COVID-19 computer virus either, because we need to share any and all information about COVID-19. They were? How does one say anglos are an 'incursion' into Quebec and then say "The second an immigrant comes off the plane he is 100% as Canadians as everyone else!!" I mean, seriously. Oh well then that's good enough for me. Yes, but why? They didn't want to live impoverished. They didn't want to live in tiny, cramped towers. Have you ever seen the cages where some poorer Hong Kong residents live? They're just enough space for a cot. But when those people came to Canada did they slough off Chinese culture and values and the sense of brotherhood they have for other Chinese? No. They settle, wherever possible, among others just like them. According to CSIS pretty much all Chinese language media in Canada is controlled by "Canadians" who are loyal to the Chinese government, and they pump out regular doses of news designed to please the Chinese Communist Party. Yes, because of the expected dual loyalties. But Israel is an Allie where China is an enemy, and a democracy where China is a fascist imperialist regime. And China makes no secret of its growing efforts at appealing to the Chinese diaspora and it's loyalty to the idea of Chinese nationalism. And every Chinese Canadian businessman who or important community member here is approached by China and reminded that if they want to do business with Chinese companies, and want to ensure their family is safe, they will take the line the Party tells them to. And so they do. But I thought diversity was our strength!! Yet every country with 'diversity' has strife, sometimes, often, enough to cause violence and breakup. More noteworthy is that you do not. Sci-Fi nonsense that an overwhelmingly Chinese ethnic province would seek self-determination from the rest of the country, perhaps under the influence of Chinese agents? Oh wait, I forgot, you don't actually know anything about sci-fi or fantasy because you dismiss it all as silliness.1 point

Muslims aren't a big problem, they won't dominate an entire province in our lifetimes and ask for political self-determination, like Quebec. If you're ok with BC becoming a Chinese province, China becoming an official provincial language, with a lot of people loyal to a hostile state, tell me how that would be good for Canada? Show me a successful model for multiculturalism, i'll show you 50 more that lead to political strife, disunity, and calls for separatism, including Canada. In order for multiculturalism to work, you have to give large minority groups political self-determination. That means BC led by Chinese for Chinese, like in Quebec led by French for French, and hostile to the majority. And if the majority don't like it, then calls for separation. And there will be the Chinese Canadian Party in federal politics, just like the Bloc. Not Canadians for Canada, but Chinese Canadians for Chinese Canada. Good times. You're basically throwing your hands up and saying everything will take care of itself. Don't be naive.1 point

Canadian Sikh's made Jagmeet Singh (Jimmy Dhaliwal, he started going by Singh to appeal to Brampton Sikhs) the leader of the NDP through tons of late party membership signups and big-time donations. I have nothing against Sikh Canadians, but voting based on ethnicity rather than policy is divisive and dangerous. Just as it is white Canadians who won't vote for Jagmeet because of his ethnicity.1 point

Our health system is like an aircraft carrier; it can change course but only slowly. Novel infections are unusual because of the acute strain they can place on health care, the economy and society. It’s the rate of change that’s the big challenge. The fatality rate of C-19 is at the very least 7 times that of seasonal flu, a nontrivial difference. If a significant proportion of the population becomes infected, we just don’t have enough slack to accommodate such an abrupt rise in demand for ICU beds, and doctors may have to decide who gets the ventilators. The news from Italy this week has been truly frightening. Two months ago I was planning to spend April there; now Bergamo is like a war zone, and many more young people are ending up in hospital than I expected. Countries that acted early and decisively to C-19, like Taiwan and Singapore, have performed relatively well. It’s no coincidence they have had previous experience of similar disasters. Panic is never a good thing but fear can be highly useful.1 point

Yeah, imagine a Chinese BC voting to separate from Canada, supported by China...1 point

I assume in a few decades it will be renamed Chinese Columbia by a vote. Another thing i'm concerned about is when you have that many people of one ethnicity in one province they may start to demand things like language rights and vote in blocs, have their own federal party etc, just like in Quebec. That will be bad for our politics and national unity.1 point

No. The reason to be concerned about migration from China are the spies that they send to spy on our businesses to steal our IP and to spy on our government departments and facilities. It's also a concern that the once here, Chinese migrants are to be loyal to China or their family back home with be threatened or jailed by the government. But it's also a big problem to discriminate against all Chinese migrants obviously, so either way we're in a pickle.1 point

Here is another possibility that may see an end to this virus that is NOT a doomsday panic theory but one based on SARS and also found at: https://www.livescience.com/coronavirus-outbreak-end.html "Another possibility is that SARS-CoV-2 will mutate in a potentially beneficial way, making it more difficult for the virus to infect people. Back in 2002, a similar coronavirus in the Guangdong province of southern China first hopped to humans from animals and caused an outbreak of an infection that became known as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). SARS spread to 26 other countries, including Canada, sparking fear that the disease would become widespread in North America. "When SARS came to Canada, we were worried that this was going to be another epicenter," said Dr. Eric Cioe-Peña, an emergency room physician and the director of global health at Northwell Health in New York. But the outbreak ended up petering out, in part due to good public health containment, he said. But it also was because SARS randomly mutated — as viruses commonly do — and became much more severe but harder to transmit to humans, he said."1 point

I won't be surprised to see a depression, but nothing like the '30s. Part of what made that one so bad was agricultural failure. It wasn't good in 1929 when the market crashed, then there was widespread drought through the middle of the '30s.1 point
