It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.2 points

The girl is a minor, her picture should not have been posted even if it was their own community newspaper. Seems to me that CBC is just stirring the racial pot. http://www.cbc.ca/news/indigenous/community-newspaper-article-head-lice-indigenous-girl-1.42813822 points

That's accommodation not racism. The reason accommodation gets under people's skin is because they're racist.2 points

Perhaps Charles just made a mistake. I understand you being a little upset about it though. At least you didn't get a warning point. You've raked him over the coals quite nicely, and the thread is now restored so what more do you want? An apology will likely not be forthcoming! Your comments about the other forum are spot-on. I don't post there, why bother since this forum is here already well-developed. But I have looked at it. People like @The_Squid and @Michael Hardner post insulting comments about MLW members. They even discuss plans to make posts here. Some of them (like squid, it appears) come here primarily to trash this forum and create discord. What they don't get is every forum has problems like this. Even their new one will face the same difficulties, and this behaviour by those members who left, people like squid encouraged by people like MH only adds to the problem.2 points

Refugees shouldn't automatically get Permanent Residence status. That's absolutely ridiculous. There's areas in most major Canadian cities of ie: Somali refuges which are-poor & crime-riddled. Refugees should all be given temporary protected status. If after a certain # of years( 5 or 6? Depending on the home country situation), if it's safe to return home you should be forced to do so. And every few years the home situation should be re-evaluated. If you have done well in Canada over those 6 years, are employed, no criminal record, have learned English or french, then you could apply on a fast track to stay as a permanent resident before you're forced to go home. As of now, approved refugees automatically receive PR status, and there's no requirement for them to learn English/french, and many do not. As an aside, the rules are now (thanks to the Liberals new rules) that to become a Canadian Citizen, only people 18 to 54 have to pass a language test for English/French. What a bunch of BS. Absolutely 100% of new Canadian citizens should be required to be able to speak, read, and write english or french fluently, I don't care if you're 6 or 90. How are supposed to vote if you can't even understand the news or what the politicians are saying? How are you supposed to fit into Canadian society as a Canadian? NONSENSE.2 points

It's worse than that...one of Hollywood's mental midgets is blaming hurricanes on Trump:2 points

I don't consider it racist but it was wrong posting the picture of a girl (or a boy), you know they will be harassed and demeaned.2 points

Sheez, he always was/is good with the hyperbole, haven't heard him for a long time. Mind you, the other side is just as bad, take Daily Kos for example, it's almost as if they suspect Trump of having that hurricane machine going in the WH basement. https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/8/25/1693142/-Hurricane-Harvey-poised-to-disproportionately-impact-blacks-in-Texas-but-no-one-is-talking-about-it then there's this - guess Trump is really busy with that hurricane making machine2 points

I wasn't sure where this belonged, but as the internet is now a form of entertainment, and is having a profound impact on our culture, I decided this was the place. I also thought it might liven this site up just a small bit if people would post the interesting, amusing, entertaining or weird things they'd come across on YouTube. Sometimes this can be an old concert from decades past, or a scuffle between protestors and police. It can be a screwed up news report, a comedy piece, or some bit of human drama you'd never find elsewhere.1 point

Jonathan Kay points out how wasteful our refugee policies are in spending vast fortunes (numbers never made public but billions) to bring over refugees and put them up in hotels and public housing here instead of helping improve the lot of far, far more refugees stuck in camps near their homelands. Citing a book by a pair of Oxford university professors he reminds us that our refugee system was originally intended to help political dissidents but has grown into this vast alternative immigration system and a sort of lottery for the dispossessed of the third world. For every person we help this way we could be helping twenty in the camps - but that wouldn't produce such lovely photo ops by virtue signalling politicians and liberals. It helps only a few, but they tend to be the few with the most resources, leaving their original country barren of the educated and the most able who might rebuild it. The refugees who make it to Canada typically will have much better lives than those who don’t. But this comes at the expense of humanitarian funds that might be spent to better effect — and with greater efficiency — on the far larger number of refugees who still languish overseas. According to the authors’ numbers, “for every US $135 of public money spent on an asylum-seeker in Europe, just US $1 is spent on a refugee in the developing world, (and) fewer than one in 10 of the 4-million Syrian refugees in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan receive any material support from the UN.” http://nationalpost.com/news/canada/jonathan-kay-why-canadas-refugee-policy-may-actually-be-doing-more-harm-than-good#comments-area1 point

Translators. It would be a lot easier if Canada could simply recognize the permanent resident status of fellow Earthlings but I guess until we stop moving forwards backwards this nonsensical angst will remain a constant irritant. Such is the burden of accommodating and dragging right wing conservatives into the future - I can put up with the angst and even the odd kick but the screaming is really getting intolerable.1 point

You cannot operate an electric vehicle, a Candu reactor or any other machine without a lubricant (oil). Then there are the thousands of other products derived from petroleum. When Russia, the United States and Saudi Arabia run out of oil, it will be worth as much as people can pay. Modern civilization is supported by three pillars: iron ore, coal and oil. Lose just one of those pillars and you have serious problems. You cannot build a reactor, an office building or pretty much anything else without steel and you can't make steel without iron ore (or recycled steel) and coal.1 point

Oil is not the only industry in Canada. The real money is in industries such as the finance sector, the nuclear industry and computer science to name just three. The world is awash in oil. It makes good business sense to hang on to our oil until there is a critical shortage in the world. Next question, if we become too reliant on the oil industry, what are we going to do when we run out? Better to diversify in advance. We don't need oil for energy. We lead the world in nuclear technology. The true value of oil and coal is in the chemical industry.1 point

How is the Ontario government different from organized crime? Other than being less organized? They have a protection racket going, sell alcohol, have casinos and run a numbers racket, and are now selling drugs. What's next, prostitution?1 point

Hey Charles, regarding the 6-foot Boa thread in Arts and Culture - you should've responded to Squid's ignorance by explaining why I posted that topic. He had no business throwing insults even if it was genuinely misplaced! We both know why it's there - and yet you labelled that topic as a trolling thread! You should've come out like the Mod that you are - especially when you're involved and equally responsible for that topic getting posted - and straightened it out right away!1 point

My question is why is the cbc running a head lice story? Why not chicken pox or the flu? It is a common occurrence in children at school and before the shots start it is usually the kids that are the cleanest get them quick. The picture was likely the cbc trying to be multi cultural and didn't see this as an insult. If they had it would have been a while boy1 point

How are Zionists racist? According to Wikipedia the word: " Zionism (Hebrew: צִיּוֹנוּת Tsiyyonut [t͡sijo̞ˈnut] after Zion) is the national movement of the Jewish people that supports the re-establishment of a Jewish homeland in the territory defined as the historic Land of Israel (roughly corresponding to Canaan, " That being the case, how is the Jewish people wanting to re-establish their Jewish homeland racist?1 point

It was Bush, Clinton, Obama and Hillary that were the troublemakers and warmongers. Trump just showed up on the scene, and has been stuck with the friggin' mess that those bozos left behind for him. How can Trump and Trump supporters be the problem? Get your head out of the sand and wake up. If liberals ever thought first and then spoke later it would be a bloody miracle.1 point

Ezra Levant has a video on the Liberals and NAFTA. He thinks it is possible the Libs are taking subjects to the negotiations so NAFTA will fail and they can have China as the major trading partner. It is just an opinion. I'm not sure what to make of it. I do find it strange they would be taking things to the bargaining table which they know Trump would abhor and have nothing to do with free trade.1 point

I'm pleased to see that this thread was revived. Now, with regard to the thread topic, I am particularly averse to anything that slithers within 2 feet of me regardless of its size. I vividly recall when I was a young girl going with my mother to collect wild blueberries encountering a grass snake. My mother had brought with her a broom (to this day I still don't know why) and I can recall seeing her trying to swat that thing with all her might. The harmless snake got away no doubt scared to death of this human swatting it for no possible reason. That cured my desire to go picking wild berries in the country.1 point

This is an interesting little piece of drama, a confrontation in Ottawa between a group of social justice warriors at Ottawa University trying to shut down a speech by a woman they didn't approve of, and their discussion with a really cool cop. It would appear as though most people never seem to learn that all this constant donate to this and donate to that is in most cases just another racket for some of those so-called charity groups like UNICEF to make a killing and take most of the dollars donated and put in their pockets. If one really cared than they should take their own money to the people themselves and hand it straight to them. Even our own stupid government does the same thing. Sad.0 points
