  1. Get rid of the hysterical anti-Muslim zealots, conspiracy people, and Trump lovers and you might get some folks who enjoy provocative and edifying discussion.

  2. The "snowflakes" do seem to be more fragile as of late, but have always teetered between agony and ecstasy depending on how the political and social winds are blowing. They cried in pain over Harper or Bush, and moaned in pleasure over Obama or Trudeau. Some are very sensitive and find opposing viewpoints to be quite distressing. How could anyone not think the same "progressive" way as they do ?

  3. Trump gets more attention than Trudeau in Canadian media (e.g. CBC)....no surprise that Trump dominates here as well.

  4. I'm all good with filling this forum up with zealots of all stripes - pro-Trump, anti-Muslim, Religious, 9/11 truthers, - perhaps we'll be able to add Area 59 disclosures, devious Masonic agendas, etc. A clearing house of the weird and paranoid.

  5. If the number of border jumpers is dwindling, why the hell can't the Liberal government find temporary shelters for them instead of purchasing winterized trailers to house them at Lacolle? The reason stares us in the face. It's because they are preparing for another influx of border jumpers.

  6. Welcome to this forum! Your participation is very much appreciated. So many of us regulars have been on this site for too long - we need fresh blood. Fresh input. I understand that it takes some time to get comfy in a new place, especially with folks that's been here for decades.......the way to settle down is to be regularly active. Post a thing or two everyday, so we can get to know you too. Before you know it, it'd feel like you'd grown old here with us!

  7. It has nothing to do with left/right, but how much they move the conversation forward. There are definitely left-of-centre posters who are guilty of not listening. Yeah, you don't get it.

  8. Deuteronomy 13:6-10 (KJV) 6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; 7 Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; 8 Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: 9 But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. 10 And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Of course this is Old Testament, which is apparently only still part of the Christian faith where convenient, the remainder of the passages being there for ... historical colour? Of course the Jewish religion has no such additional Testament, so this kind of reflects rather poorly on them. The New Testamement is not cut and dry on the subject, but does include Matthew 18:6: 6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Note: In the active voice σκανδαλίζω [skandalizō] means "cause someone to fall away from (or reject) faith," as in the saying of Jesus about the person who "causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin [stumble]" (Wikipedia) We also have well over a milenium of the historical treatment of apostasy and heresy by Christians. It is not the particulars of the religion that is an issue, but the mindset of the culture towards it: fundamentalism, extremism, etc. Arguing about which flavour of fairy tales is inherently more harmful misses the point entirely.

  9. From the initial article: The students were three days into their canoe trip northeast of Toronto when Jeremiah slipped under the water while swimming in Big Trout Lake. While your experiment COULD be based on reality, you most certainly are not, Angus. Were the kids in the water for the full "three days into their canoe trip"? Even though you know I was describing the situation as per the article you flew off on some crazy Angus Thermopile "experiment" that didn't come close to the actual reality.

  12. Don't think he is, nor Kimmy. I suppose the left only likes an echo chamber, it wasn't too long ago that MLW was such a forum, it swings back and forth. The resident conspiracy theorist hasn't been around lately but when he returns maybe when he clutters up a thread with insults and conspiracy rants they can be moved to the conspiracy area. As for pro Trumpers, so what, they are entitled to not opinion too.

  19. How can one be a Christian without following the bible to the letter? Same notion. I know many who claim to be of a certain religion but that goes as far as saying they believe in a God and that's about it. Non practicing Christians I think would be the term. You have varying degrees of a certain levels of religiousness in all religions.

  20. Better still, extend an invitation to those who were permanently banned but were well liked here, to those who left because of the heavy handed moderation and to those who left because of the forum being over ridden with nutbars. The owner knows how to get in touch with them. You want to improve the site? Extend some Goodwill and good business practices like any other successful business and start a good will campaign otherwise this site is just gonna be left with, well I don't need to spell it out.

  24. From what I've heard they all go to mosques. But of course, it depends on your definition of extremist. If you mean the terrorists, many go to mosques. In fact, the batch who attacked people in Spain were led by the Imam of their mosque. My definition of extremist is not someone who is extreme according to the Muslim religion but someone whose views are extreme by the standards of mainstream, secular Canada. That would include anyone who says "In order to keep men from becoming aroused, women must cover themselves," for example. Someone who thinks homosexuality should be illegal would also be an extremist in my opinion, as would anyone of any religion who says that if you leave that religion or blaspheme against it you should be killed.

  33. I don't think the bright orange rodent is actually a racist OR far right. I think hes a political opportunist that has been told that tapping into anti-immigrant and anti Muslim sentiment is politically expedient, and that far right racist retards are an important pillar of his political base whether he likes them or agrees with them or not (he probably doesn't). I think his drivers are things like money, personal legacy, and narcissism.... Not idealogy. Same reason Hilary Clinton courts the "poor", even though she would probably have herself professionally de-loused after, if she ever had to ride on a public bus with them.

Well, looks like being "presidential" isn't like the stereotyped cool and polished men anymore .....after all, when most of these so-called refined "presidential" candidates are stripped of their veneers and all their pretentions- they're nothing more but lying scammers and thieves, who usually have so many skeletons buried in their filthy closets!

  36. The overall design, and in fact the literally stated purpose - was to stop the government from preventing certain types of religious belief. Again you need to look at the context and the backdrop that these protections emerged from. As for it working "well" that is a subjective judgement. I think it would work just as well if Churches were treated the same as any other private club.
    1 point
  37. I'm not sure I would attribute that to a pluralistic society though. I think that a few decades ago this kind of discrimination existed everywhere. Religion has used protections that were meant to prevent overt persecution, or preference by the government for one religion over another, to prevent society from demanding they act in accordance with modern common decency. The point being... its an accident. Not some good thing we as a pluralistic society determined was in our interests. They should play by the same rules as any other private interest.

  38. I find the immigration debate pretty boring and unimportant, but when I wrote my last post it got me thinking... Maybe we should have a modern version of homesteading, where we can use immigrants and refugees to achieve national goals, and improve their lives at the same time. For example... "sure you can come and live here, but only if you spend your first 5 years at THIS location, where we are trying to develop a remote mining community". You will get a piece of land to live on, and if stay there past 5 years you will own it free and clear. If you don't... you go back to Asscrackistan. This might stop immigrants from only living our large cities, and help develop resources in areas where Canadians don't want to live. Right now its so expensive to get Canadian workers in these locations that companies end up paying double what they should be, or the resources don't get developed at all. This is just an example, and maybe not the best one, but the general idea is... Sure... you can come here... and you WILL have a better life. But you have to do what we want, where we want it done... for the first few years.

  39. So what? That's the same reason Europeans came here. The chance at a better life, and the promise of some perks. European settlers used to get 150 acres for free, just for showing up.

  41. Ya, I see it all the time. The more militant feminists have brainwashed women into believing that unless they work fulltime, traditionally male roles, they're inferior. It's kind of ironic. Feminists using traditional male roles as the standard of success.

  42. Actually trump supports are the EXACT American equivalent of you. Reactionist, simple minded, xenophobic, social program haters. You pretty much ARE them. Again this just shows your normal propensity for completely misunderstanding others. "The left" for you is just an imaginary bunch of people in your head. It was kind of ironic that in your inane OP you went off on some mindless diatribe against the "the left", and the "the forces of the left", then a couple of posts later lamented that "people cant debate intelligently". I have not watched the CBC in years. And I don't watch any left wing media at all. I don't even have cable, and I almost never read news media at all.

  43. You know jb, I used to feel down about the lack of nationalistic fervour in Canada. Even on "Canada Day" there isn't a whole lot of flag waving outside of special events. So, whenever I was across the border and drove past neigbourhoods where the Stars and Stripes was in front of every third house, I used to envy American patriotism. But then along came Iraq! And I witnessed how a conniving clique of politicians could use fear and patriotism to make an emotional case for a war that made no logical sense! Now, I feel a little better about our subdued sense of nationalism.

  48. anti-Muslim zealots? Trump lovers? Ha-ha-ha-ha did I guess it right? Here's what I posted in the other topic about leftwingers who'd left the building. Temporary or permanent? Who knows... Can we blame their departure on Trump? You know the reaction of the leftwing to Trump's victory...... I remember heated arguments with the pro- Trumps just before some of those folks left. It's like a "walk-out" protest, maybe? Or, a hissy fit, you think? Like, "I'm outa here!" <followed by a loud slamming of the door> Speaking of conspiracy people....I like them in this forum, too! They provide variety - who wanna read only left-wing propaganda in a forum? It's bad enough that we hear the same drivel on mainstream media without the same rhetorics being mouthed off here! Too bad they don't have a section for conspiracy theories that's why they're all over the map here. I enjoy our resident conspiracy zealot - though you gotta be in certain kinda mood for him - and he tends to get personal when things aren't going his way. But hey, that's how he is! That's the problem - you want everyone to say the things you wanna hear! Well MH - not everyone is your clone. Look for a left-wing club, if you crave for a group hug. How amazing for a lefty to not acknowledge the different personalities of individuals! And here I thought you're inclusive (and understanding).

  50. I can see why they need to do that. But the problem is not that insufficient funding is given, it's that the funding is being misappropriated. Despite being given billions of dollars in government funding, many still live in abject poverty. No matter how much is given to them, no matter how carefully the money is controlled, they still manage to squander it and come up empty handed. The number of cases involving misappropriation of funds (by Indians) is astounding.
