Longtime Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu crosses floor to join Liberals

The Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong MP’s seat hands Carney a majority whether or not Liberals win the Quebec riding of Terrebonne in Monday’s byelections.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal tent is expanding — pulling at the seams and turning it a slightly purple shade.

Wednesday, Carney welcomed to the Grits’ fold Marilyn Gladu, the four-time Conservative MP for what’s now calledSarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong. She is the fifth floor crosser, the fourth Conservative, and one seat that hands Carney a majority whether or not the Liberals win the Quebec riding of Terrebonne in next Monday’s byelections.

Gladu is well known on Parliament Hill for her social conservative stances and her collegial style. She is charming, co-operative, and a vocal MP who handily won her riding with more than 50 per cent of the vote last spring.

Her constituents want serious leadership and a real plan, something that sound-bite Pete can't provide.  5 floor crossers now and betting more to come.  Well played Poilievre....

She said this past year has been like no other that Canada has ever faced, and she's "heard clearly from constituents that you want serious leadership and a real plan to build a stronger and more independent Canadian economy."

Seeing this on the morning news has made my day so much better. Tories slowly grasping how useless and unpopular their can't/wont get a security clearance leader is.

She called Carny a grifter. She said that any MP who crosses the floor should have an automatic byelection to confirm it because otherwise it was betraying your constituents. In January, after another CPC MP publicly stated how he was approached by the Liberals and refused, she tweeted "Thank you for being true to your constituents".  She said that Mark Carny has been lying to Canadians from the start. All of this in the last few months.

For her to now cross to the Liberals is such gobsmacking hypocrisy that we can only wonder how much she was offered. Because she obviously doesn't give a damn about her constituents. She's been offered something, guarantees made.

So just how many horrible despicable people like her and the other floor crossers are there in the Conservative Party and who should be held accountable for letting them in and letting them run as candidates?

The other floor crossers were from ridings that could have gone either way.

This one is different.

Sarnia is a manufacturing hub.

The Liberals are against industry and manufacturing, so I doubt her constituents were consulted on this.

More excuses but...they are leaving because of PP's leadership.

HA HA HA.  another conservative sees how bad PP's leadership is.

Gladu was a 4 time elected Conservative MP. She finally came to realize the last 4 elections with 3 LOSER leaders were huge failures for the conservatives. She realizes now what the rest of Canadians have known... PP is the latest in a long list of conservative LOSERS.

Blaming the floor crosser instead of the party leadership is what is hypocritical LOL

She's 63 and has been an MP for 11 years.

I wouldn't discount the fact that some of these folks may have ulterior motives and see themselves as serving their last parliamentary stint. Having a cabinet pension or realizing some other personal aspiration might be an inducement here.

I'd love to know what the backroom deals were.

If this becomes the norm, it might become fun to watch. I'd love to watch the naked gloating and sarcasm (on display here) somersault headlong into the mats if/when the same happens in reverse at some point.

If people want to skate that's fine with me, it's on them and they'll answer for it at some point in the future. My only heartburn with this is the possibility of undoing an election result that could change an elected minority into a majority. Personally, I see that as undemocratic and think it should trigger a general election if it comes about.

Many here will disagree, they'll cheer loudly and ridicule incessantly just as they did under Biden.... until they choke on the next Trump. They enjoy the moment so much they don't even realize they're actually creating the next Trump.

Landing that somersault (in the form of a jumping break fall) takes a bit of practice and it can  take a toll on fat, aging boomer bodies. I would urge a measure of caution here and suggest that people should be careful what they cheer for.

Some of us said the very same right here during the Biden era.... and I have to say, the flood of Robo tears was worth the cost of admission.

Best line of the day on CBC Power Panel...the Liberal big tent is big enough you could drive a truckers convoy thru it.

Not all Liberals are happy about it.

I have wondered what the Liberal backbenchers think of these floor crossers who get splashy new titles, unlimited expense accounts, trips around the world and attention from Carney.

Weird that she felt her far right views were being suppressed by Poilievre, so she goes to a far left party?

Well, Liberal pom-pom wavers.  This is it.

Now is your chance to prove that a Liberal government can create some sort of prosperity.

It’s never happened before, and if they can’t do it with a majority - hopefully you’ll finally wake up.

My worry, though, is that they will now flood the country with even more Indian immigrants and censor dissidents with their NEW! 5 censorship bills.  Continue giving our money away while our own infrastructure crumbles - housing, jobs, schools, healthcare systems.  Get everybody on Digital ID, tied to your carbon credit score.  More massive deficits, more money printing.  Same excuses and delays for why we can't have any industry in Canada that's not totally funded by taxpayers.   Exponentially grow the size of government and you’ll never be able to vote yourself out of this mess again.

I hope I’m wrong. But I think I'm not.

11 years of experience tells me I'm not.

World history tells me I'm not.
