So what, they are still a tax on imports. Liquor and tobacco taxes are used to limit their use. They are still taxes. They might be completely different by they're still just the same!!!!" ?????????????? They are not "still a tax", they have a completely different effect and purpose and you can't compare them. it's stupid. I can see why you're leaving it there given you're the one being deliberately obtuse. Again, with a tariff the idea is to promote growth in industry and jobs locally by blocking foreign companies. that is NOT what taxes do. So there is an effect and benefit that is very different. This childishness is why the left is falling behind in this day and age. Quote "That which doesn't kill me... Had better start running."

CdnFox Posted August 24, 2025 Report Posted August 24, 2025 7 minutes ago, Aristides said: You're right, it isn't a tax, It's being paid by the imaginary people who talk to you every day. I've never met the people in your head, and i only talk to them on here when i reply to you So your argument now appears to be "if somebody pays for anything, it's a tax". No. That's not how it works. Here's the definition of tax: A contribution for the support of a government required of persons, groups, or businesses within the domain of that government. And that's pretty accurate. It's POSSIBLE a levy or duty could be a tax if it's intention is to pay for a gov't service. But that is usually called a 'duty', and isn't ALWAYS about importation. But it goes to pay for the services. In the broadest possible sense a tariff can be though of as being like a tax, in the same way that a royalty for natural resources can be though of like a sort of tax. But neither are taxes in the normal sense and tariffs are even less so. You're being stupid and it's not a good look. Trump didn't increase "taxes", he increased tariffs and with the express intent of denying other countries and companies easy access to the american market to stimulate the american economy and investment. Call it what it is, and talk about what it is. I've told you a million times if you have to lie to make your point it's not a very good point. Quote "That which doesn't kill me... Don't worry little man, It's everyone else that's a child and you're the only grown up in the room.... So maybe try looking at this way.... If a tariff of 25% is applied to a 'widget' that costs $100 that means the American based importer of that 'widget' now pays $125 compared to the $100 they paid previously. Now that they've paid the additional $25 that will not be coming out of their profitability, they will pass that on to the supply chain be it a distributor and/or final seller until it gets to you who will be paying $25 more for the 'widget' than you did previously. It's not that hard to understand is it DF? You're an angry little dude aren't you. Can't help but take childish shots at anyone who doesn't agree with your flawed so-called logic in this subject, and pretty much every other. An angry little fool... Quote

If a tariff of 25% is applied to a 'widget' that costs $100 that means the American based importer of that 'widget' now pays $125 compared to the $100 they paid previously. Or buys a 110 dollar widget that was made locally. Or maybe even starts up a widget company because it'll now be cheaper. And thus employs people and contributes more to the economy which helps keep taxes lower and prosperity higher for everyone. this is the prime difference between a tax, which is a financial tool for gov'ts to fund their bills, and a tariff, which gov'ts use to influence their internal economies and industries. I actually have a fair number of very civil conversations with people i disagree with on this board when they're at least making sensible cases for their positon.
