Watching the dumping of thousands of gallons of milk on the ground is a crime. The price of milk could have probably dropped in half if that disposal of milk were not done. Ya, I hate to see it too. The system was designed to try and keep production in line with demand whilst providing a living wage for farmers.

It's pretty clearly out of whack though. Unfortunately, the waste is a byproduct of excess production (over quota)... dumping it didn't make a lot of sense to me when I was younger either (my aunt had a dairy farm).

In a ten year period (ending in 2021) there was over 6 billion litres of excess milk dumped nationally and some estimates put it higher than that. It represents about 10% of the Canadian market. But, if you think about it 10% excess production individually doesn't seem crazy high to me... the combined over production across the board sure is though and it's pure waste.

Some of the resident "greenies" might like to measure all this waste in terms of the GHGs that go into producing it... they never seem to get too excited about stuff like that. Apparently It's about 8 million tons of Co2 annually, somewhere around the equivalent of 300, 000 cars. That sound high to me but what do I know. Anyway, years later it still doesn't make a lot of sense and it sounds like it's gotten worse.

There is so much you don’t know it’s impossible to have a conversation with you. It’s like trying to explain am advanced calculus problem to someone who can’t even add and subtract. Here the Coles notes version

Canadian tariffs for milk that is above the import quota starts at 5% and then goes up from there  But nobody imports above the quotas because we produce enough milk at home so nobody is paying the tariff  At least you could pay the tariff and import the milk if you wanted to, unlike in USA where doing so would make you a criminal

Ya, the price would drop in half until all the farmers went out of business and then it would quadruple for lack of supply. Cows aren't machines that you can turn on and off like a production line. First they have to be born and grow old enough to get pregnant and have a calf and then you can't shut them off until they have finished producing milk. Then you still have the expense of keeping them even if they aren't producing, or selling them for beef. Then when demand ramps up again there are no cows to produce the milk because economics have force the farmers to sell them. Damn you city folks are ignorant.
