Canada: Dems vs Trump

Could Canada become a society - political space - where some people view others as MAGA?

You know - like Dems do - the Americans who hate Trump people.

Or do we Canadians view others and get along: Catholics, English, whatever.

That's already very much a thing.

Trudeau taught us to hate each other as groups during the pandemic.  Those who didn't want to be vaccinated were labeled as 'bigots and misogynists".  Just as the maga people are labeled by the left in the states. He said they are 'wastes of space' and said a decision would have to be made as to whether these people 'would be tolerated'.

And i watched many families get ripped apart by that. Friendships ended, couples broke up - and i don't mean one or two here and there. It was a pretty common phenomenon, and most people know at least ONE case of that happening.

We became divided - we did not 'come together' to weather the storm as is our tradition.

We've already had a number of actual 'maga' instances of people being attacked or harassed for wearing maga hats or the like.

So it's not really a question.  It can happen, it is happening. In all of human history it's been easier for those seeking power to break people apart and divide them than it is to bring them all together.  We're no different.

We are subject to the same changes to the media landscape, and as such there is fertile ground for populism to take root.

Disagree.

Unlike Americans, we ordinary Canadians often choose/vote outside.

Michael,

Like Lévesque, I prefer a different arrangememt.

But like Trudeau père, the measure of a society is how willing a majority is to defend a minority.

I'm Canadian.

"populist" doesn't mean anything. It's a weird general pejorative that the left tends to use.  A populist simply promises what is popular.  Well for god's sake - which politician exactly DOESN"T do that?   Some people say a popuist promises popular things that are of trite value or lack substance but even that seems a little bullshitty.

And people aren't populists - so saying they're 'in  canada" is childish.

The left simply can't get by without it's dehumanizing terms.  The populists are coming! The populists are coming!!! Yeash - trudeau was a populist.

It's sad that you can look at your honest commentary and realize that what you're talking about is a political party in a western country teaching 50% of their population to hate the other 50%.

This isn't about disliking or not trusting a specific politician, or even just hating one politician, or even hating his party: they want their voters to just hate everyone who voted for the opposition.

Where are they going with this?

If your voters hate everyone who votes for the other guys, will they accept the results of an election they don't like?

We know the average Dem voter will just believe the Dems won if they say so, regardless of any other evidence.

Keep it up and it might be the same place you want your hatred with the left to take us.

If it wasn't for the absence of courage with your convictions there might not be a left today. Too late now though - you're stuck with us forever.

Probably not, how well is this working out for your guys?

I said I agree, Canadians generally get along.  Occasionally some have to try a little harder is all.

Agree? We get along.

=====

Margaret Atwood - typical leftist protestant anglo - claims that she/we "survive".

I disagree,

IMHO, we Canadians - French/Catholic/whatever - we go along to get along.
