Big Guy Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 4 die after whale-watching boat with 27 aboard sinks off Vancouver Island; http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2015/10/25/whale-watching-boat-with-27-aboard-sinks-off-vancouver-island-fatalities-reported.html It has been difficult finding out the reason for this boat to flip over. My first assumption is that a whale did the job. In most cases of this type it happens in rough water but the water appears to have been fairly calm at the time. I have never been on one of these boats - if everybody runs to one side will that flip it over? Wilber Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Hard to say, you don't need wind to have big swells out there. Nothing between you and Japan. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
The_Squid Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 (edited) A whale didn't flip the vessel. The boat is 65 feet long. I suspect the skipper made some very disastrous decisions. Edited October 26, 2015 by The_Squid Quote
TimG Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Been a bad year for small boats off the coast of BC: http://www.theprovince.com/these+boats+they+just+sink+they+shouldn+sink+tugboat+sinking+sixth+down+waters+this+year/11397930/story.html It’s shaping up to be a disastrous year for B.C.’s tugboat industry with the sinking of its sixth tug Monday, the third lost this month. But the waters were calm from what I read, how do you flip a 65 foot boat? Quote It's kind of the worst thing that any humans could be doing at this time in human history. The_Squid Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 Really? But the waters were calm from what I read, how do you flip a 65 foot boat? You hit a rock, or run aground.... That's me speculating... Also, there wasn't enough time to get a mayday off, which points to a skipper that doesn't know what he's doing since a mayday is simply a flick of a switch away. There is a switch on every radio these days that broadcasts a mayday. Again, that's me speculating.... Quote
Wilber Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 Calm is a relative term over there. Apparently this boat had been doing the same tour twice a day for the last 20 years and this captain was there for 18 of them. The two other crew members had been there five and three years. Big Guy Posted October 27, 2015 Author Report Posted October 27, 2015 I notice that this boat had an upper deck so it would be interesting to find out where the center of balance was. If you had 23 people on the upper deck and someday shouted, "Holy S%%%, look at this"!!! And everybody ran to one side would the boat tip over? bush_cheney2004 Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 OK...everybody guess what happened, then we can see what the TSB finds out for sure. (Some CBC commenter said the NTSB, but sorry, that's for the U.S.) I guess that the Leviathan II ran aground on some rocks or submerged hazard, causing catastrophic flooding and rapid loss of buoyancy. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
On Guard for Thee Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 I doubt the crew with all their experience would simply run aground in familiar water on a nice day. Rogue wave is my guess. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 I doubt the crew with all their experience would simply run aground in familiar water on a nice day. Rogue wave is my guess. Indeed that is what I heard on CBC radio's national broadcast today. Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner
Topaz Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 Anyone know if life preservers were on the boat? I sure would have one on, I can't swim. Sad about the visitors to Canada that died. Quote
On Guard for Thee Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 Anyone know if life preservers were on the boat? I sure would have one on, I can't swim. Sad about the visitors to Canada that died. On the boat yes, but not required to be worn. If it was in fact a rogue wave that flipped it, the pax likely didn't have time to get to a life jacket. You ca bet that may change after the TSB report/recommendations are completed. Quote
Big Guy Posted October 27, 2015 Author Report Posted October 27, 2015 I wonder if the whales were watching? Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
The_Squid Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 (edited) What I find amazing are the mariners out in their own boats who all responded to the mayday call and put themselves at risk to rescue people. The First Nations on the coast always respond to marine emergencies without hesitation. There probably wasn't a single vessel out there who didn't respond. Compare that to a traffic accident where people are happy to drive by without stopping or get angry that their lives have been inconvenienced. Edited October 27, 2015 by The_Squid Quote
eyeball Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 I will not be responding to questions in personal messages or this thread about this accident until official investigations are concluded. I will only say this hit close to home, that I wasn't involved and that a lot of the speculation being engaged in here and elsewhere is unfounded. Boges Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 Anyone know if life preservers were on the boat? I sure would have one on, I can't swim. Sad about the visitors to Canada that died. This. Unless of course you were on a deck below or injured by the capsizing somehow. Quote
Wilber Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 (edited) This. Unless of course you were on a deck below or injured by the capsizing somehow. I know this speculation which I hate to do but it seems that all the people who died were part of the same group, so it makes me wonder if they were all inside together when this happened. Eyeball, this tragedy must be very hard for you to process. These types of accidents aren't supposed to happen here but unfortunately they do. It's so very sad and must be overwhelming for your community. And to think we have members here making jokes is beyond my comprehension of human nature. BC_chick Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 CBC is reporting that a wave hit the boat and that the passengers who died were not wearing life-jackets. WestCoastRunner Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 There was an interesting discussion on CBC radio today about providing funding to the First Nations to better equip them on coastal BC for SAR. It's a great idea as these people know the waters very well. Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. The_Squid Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 There was an interesting discussion on CBC radio today about providing funding to the First Nations to better equip them on coastal BC for SAR. It's a great idea as these people know the waters very well. They do know the waters. And as long as their SAR Technicians are trained the same as everywhere else and their equipment is maintained properly, it's a great idea. It's not just a matter of buying them a boat and sending them out. Quote
